Hunter did everything right after the shot.

👉 Went and marked blood at hit site.
👉 Followed it for 50 yards saw it was hit back and sparse dark blood, indicating liver hit.
👉 Backed out and called.

He also said the deer hunched up when trotting away, with tail flickering.

We told him it would be dead within 250 yards if what he saw was accurate, and he wouldn’t need a dog.

He didn’t want to chance anything with the rain/snow mix we had overnight, so he had us come out. Ten minutes later, Aspen was on the deer.

Happy hunter/ happy dog!!

Busy day with Aspen.

Recovered one that was 24 hours old with heavy rain all night. Hunters had lost blood because of rain - Aspen went right to it at 300 yards! Lung entry/intestine exit.

Aspen made quick work of this track. 💨

700 yards in about ten minutes - deer was one lung/liver hit and jumped. We picked up where it was jumped and she went straight to it.

Happy hunter, happy handler, and most importantly…happy dog.

Putting them on the tailgates is what she’s all about.

Aspen on the boards again!

Neck shot hardly any blood after 200 yards, total track about 1000yds. With several beds, died out in middle of pond again.

Hunter was happy said “There’s no way we would’ve found that deer on our own!”

She had to work through some grid search but once she did she took us right to it!

Aspen took us on a great adventure today!

Hunter shot a buck, thought it was a solid hit, ran down a ridge across the end of a lake and saw it run out onto an island of bog and thick thick tamaracks and bushes. Tracked it over eight tenths of a mile most of it fighting brush and hands and knees. Several times tossing her over sink holes. I fell in one up to armpits in muck water and later the hunter also went in about chest high. That was great. Aspen tracked it to the very tip of the island and was whining at the water and wouldn’t leave. I knew the deer was still alive because it was spotting blood every now and then, fresh. At one point we could smell it. We determined it swam across or doubled back. So we were headed back to the boat we crossed on when Aspen winded him and took us right to the deer laying with his head down on the ground. We got within ten yards before we seen him and off he went. Aspen chasing again. We heard water and he was trying to swim the lake and finally gave up the fight. Awesome buck. Awesome track, but it was a lot of work. Hunter went and got the boat we heaved the deer into the boat and rowed back to the truck. Sometimes the best things are the hardest earned. Aspen never doubted we’d find that deer. Fetch it up girl. Road of a deer too!!!!

Aspen’s Adventure Today -

A long track through state land a little over half mile or so, and Aspen picked up where hunter lost blood. Tracked it up to a private piece of land into a cut field that had a pile of dirt - the highest point, Aspen went right to the hill where there was a bed with fresh blood in it. We called the track believing it to be a high shoulder hit and the deer still alive and well. She did all she could but we ran out of property.

Nap time for Aspen! 😴

Second track of the day - 3/4 of a mile with no sign, then jumped buck with blood in bed. Tracked it another 1/2 mile before calling it. Hunter was impressed and Aspen did all she could do. Can’t recover them if they aren’t dead! 🦌 Good day.

Another fun day for Aspen!

Liver in, gut exit shot. ➡️ Hunter and group tracked and jumped deer after 400 yards, grid searched a bit and then backed out.

Next morning we get called out (13 hours later). Aspen takes off - which is not common. I had to use Garmin to find her until we heard barking.

Deer is jumped and chased into a neighbors front yard with Aspen in hot pursuit, barking and biting its hind quarters. The deer is laboring and trying to ignore the crazy we**ie dog until it finally realizes people are there too and runs into woods.

Tell hunter to go get bow and we will follow up because deer isn’t too strong anymore. Hunter returns ten minutes later we track it to bed by pond follow up shot in the neck and the deer bolts into a muck pond with Aspen in hot pursuit. Mud and muck from head to toe, but Aspen was not letting this deer get away!

Finally recovered and happy hunter!! First deer in awhile for him, smiles all around. Bath for Aspen which isn’t her favorite. Lol. Moral of the story….if questionable shot call a tracker and ask opinion on how long to wait to track. Or give minimum 8-10 hours to be safe. All’s well that ends well. Good luck hunting. YOU WHACK EM; WE’LL TRACK EM!

Starting 2024 off right.

Aspen recovered this nice doe for this hunter who did everything right! They tracked for roughly 85 yards and realized it was liver shot - backed out called in the dog. Quick, clean recovery in the morning. Give credit to hunters willing to do everything they can to recover any deer, EVEN DOES!!!! A true sportsman!

Hunter’s biggest buck yet. They knew the hit was far back. Backed out of woods and waited till morning.

The deer went into a swampy area and bedded up several times, and then crossed an open field and expired in the back yard by a big leaf pile. Unbeknownst to them it was within a 100 yards of the house!

It expired several hours before, but we are sure it was alive 10-12 hours after shot. Happy ending for all. Way to go Aspen!!

Aspen makes quick work of a deer after the hunter did exactly the right thing!

He knew it was back-thinking liver so backed out and called. Told him to wait until morning and it would be bedded up and dead by morning.

Sure enough, a quick hundred yard track with virtually no blood ( high liver entrance/gut exit) and deer was recovered.

The old adage says “when in doubt back out” is true every time. Resist the temptation of going and tracking in a couple hours.

Gotcha! Cornfield recovery, 200 yards. Aspen on the board. GUT shot.
