Does your dog ignore you when you want them to come? Do they listen sometimes but not others?
Want to improve reliability of the come cue?
2 words:
Reinforcement
History

What this means is, you need to build this life-saving skill as an automatic habit, not just an occasional request when your dog is busy doing something they enjoy.

This is the "get me" game:
1) Get your dog excited, grab their favorite toy, and a handful of their favorite small treats in your pouch
2) Take one excited step backward away from your dog, reward with praise and treat reward with a treat saying "good come!" when they come
3) Take a few steps backward while saying their name and clapping or squeaking their toy for example, praise and treat reward saying "good come!" when they come
4) Turn away from them and run a few steps away, praise and reward saying "good come!"
5) Do this faster and farther away each time, building a fun "come and get me" game that reinforces them coming to you when you call them.
6) Make this a part of your daily routine so this becomes a fun habit, instead of a punishment.

Tip: NEVER chase your dog for fun, this is not safe if they ever get out into the street, if they think running away from you is fun, it becomes very dangerous.

There are many more training games you can play to teach your dog a solid and reliable recall, just reach out to me for training help: (702) 997-5462.

Have fun training!

What's in a name?
Let's break down a few popular doodle cross-breeds and some of the likely behavior traits you might see:

1) Goldendoodle- this is a cross between a golden retriever and a poodle of various size and color.

*Golden retrievers were bred as a scottish gun dog, serious hunters at field work, built to retrieve waterfowl for hours on end. There are also only 2 main lineages, field golden retrievers and show golden retrievers.
Not exactly a couch potato!
They have a lot of exercise and mental enrichment needs that can cause frustration and unwanted behaviors if not provided on a daily basis.

*Poodle- These dogs are eager, athletic, versatile and super smart. They come in 3 sizes: Standard, miniature and toy.
They require an attentive owner, monthly grooming, daily brushing and plenty of physical and mental exercise on a daily basis.

*Myth: These dogs coats are hypo-allergenic. According to the Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America- allergies are actually caused by dogs skin dander, saliva and urine. Poodles, and all dogs, have all of those things, despite their soft curly hair type.

*Myth: Golden doodles are half golden retriever and half poodle. Even our human genetics involve random expression of genes when we're conceived, if our parents are of 2 different ethnicities, there's no guarantee we will be half and half, it's actually more likely you won't.

So, if you're looking for a certain size, color or temperament, realize the gene pool is so varied and unregulated that it is never a guarantee!

They can have many of the traits we hope for, and some we don't want. It's unrealistic to assume they'll have only the best of both equally, that's juts not how genetics and breeding works!

They can be wonderful, kind, smart, friendly companions who are highly trainable and ready for anything.

Do you have a goldendoodle? Tell us about your pup in the comments!!!

๐Ÿพ **Decoding Dog Behavior: Insights into Canine Communication** ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ”

Delving into the intriguing realm of dog behavior offers dog owners a deeper insight into the inner workings of their canine companions. Dogs communicate with us through a complex language of body signals, vocalizations, and behaviors. By deciphering these cues, we can gain valuable insights into their emotions, needs, and desires.

- **Licking**: While licking is often seen as a sign of affection, it can also indicate stress, anxiety, or medical issues such as allergies. Observing the frequency and context of licking behavior is crucial in understanding its underlying cause.

- **Belly Up**: Rolling onto their back may indicate trust and relaxation, but it can also signal fear or a desire to avoid confrontation. Dogs may also expose their belly as a defensive posture to protect vital organs while feeling threatened.

- **Tail Wagging**: Tail wagging is commonly associated with happiness, but it can also signify other emotions such as anxiety, insecurity, or even aggression depending on the context and body language. Paying attention to the speed, height, and overall posture of the tail can provide insights into the dog's emotional state.

Understanding the nuances of canine communication can help foster a deeper connection with our furry companions and ensure their well-being and happiness. By interpreting their body language and vocalizations, we can better respond to their needs and strengthen the bond between humans and dogs. Through patience, empathy, and observation, we can navigate the fascinating world of dog behavior and cultivate meaningful relationships with our canine companions.

๐Ÿ“Œ **General Tip**: Pay attention to your dog's body posture. Floppy, silly dogs tend to express friendly happiness and playfulness, while dogs who appear tense, with their bodies situated in stiff right angles, and intensely interested in one particular thing or person, may be indicating unhappiness or worry. Dogs can exhibit fight, flight, or freeze responses, and those who freeze and appear tense may be overly fearful or in need of a break from the situation.

๐Ÿพ **Beat the Heat: Fun Indoor Activities for Your Dog!** ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ ๐Ÿถ

As the scorching summer temperatures make outdoor activities challenging, it's essential to find indoor alternatives to keep your dog entertained and active. Indoor activities not only help your dog stay cool but also provide mental stimulation and physical exercise. From interactive puzzle toys to indoor fetch games, there are plenty of ways to ensure your dog remains happy and healthy while beating the heat indoors.

Here are some indoor activities to try this summer:

- Set up a baby pool with ice cubes and water for your dog to splash around and cool off. ๐ŸŒŠโ„๏ธ
- Create shady grassy areas inside your home using umbrellas or shade cloths where your dog can relax comfortably. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ
- Consider enrolling your dog in pool or swimming classes designed for indoor facilities to provide a fun and safe way for them to exercise and stay cool. ๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿพ
- Take a drive to cooler locations like Mt. Charleston or other nearby areas where temperatures are lower, allowing for enjoyable outdoor adventures without the risk of overheating. ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿž๏ธ
- Before heading out for walks, wet your dog's fur with a spray bottle or damp towel to help them stay cool during outdoor excursions. ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ
- Schedule outdoor activities such as walks or playtime either early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler. ๐ŸŒ…๐Ÿ•
- Plan outings to pet-friendly stores like Home Depot or Lowes, where your dog can explore and socialize in a climate-controlled environment. ๐Ÿ›๏ธ๐Ÿถ

In addition to these activities, consider incorporating indoor training sessions or teaching your dog new tricks to keep their minds engaged and stimulated. Puzzle toys, treat-dispensing balls, and interactive games can also provide mental enrichment while encouraging physical activity. By embracing indoor activities, you can ensure that your dog remains happy, healthy, and entertained throughout the summer months, regardless of the soaring temperatures outside.

๐ŸŒž๐Ÿšจ **Summer Safety Alert for Dog Owners!** ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿšจ

Las Vegas summers can be especially harsh for our furry family members, with risks like dehydration, heatstroke, sunburn, and even burned paw pads. Hereโ€™s an essential guide to ensure your pets are protected during the hot months, particularly from May to September, when temperatures soar.

**๐ŸŒก๏ธ High-Risk Breeds:**
- **Dark Fur:** Overheats quickly under the sun. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ”ฅ
- **Light & Thin Fur:** Vulnerable to sunburn. ๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบโ˜€๏ธ
- **Cold-Weather Breeds:** Struggle in the heat, bred for cold. Best to find cooler activities during summer. โ„๏ธโžก๏ธ๐ŸŒž
- **Brachycephalic Breeds:** Short noses mean breathing difficulties and cooling challenges. ๐Ÿ˜ฅ๐Ÿพ

**๐Ÿพ Paw Protection:** The pavement can become dangerously hot. Always check the ground temperature before walks and consider protective gear. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ”ฅ

**๐Ÿ’ฆ Proactive Measures for All Dogs:**
- **Limit Exposure:** Seek shade and avoid peak heat hours. ๐Ÿ ๐ŸŒณ
- **Stay Hydrated:** Access to water and cool spots is crucial. ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿšฐ
- **Monitor Activity:** Choose cooler times for walks and play. ๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ‡
- **Weather Check:** Before heading out, check temps. Over 80ยฐF means high risk for hot surfaces. Best to stay indoors. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ๐Ÿ
- **Cooling Solutions:** Consider a baby pool for at-home cooling, or reach out for indoor exercise tips. ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ
- **Indoor Activities:** Visit pet-friendly stores or travel to cooler places like Mt. Charleston for a retreat from the heat. ๐Ÿš—๐ŸŒฒ
- **Watch for Signs:** Be alert to any distress signals from your dog. ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿถ

Remember, our dogs often donโ€™t know their limits in the heat, making it our responsibility to ensure their safety. By taking these proactive steps, we can help our pets navigate the summer safely, keeping them cool, comfortable, and happy.

Stay safe and enjoy the summer with your furry friends responsibly!

๐Ÿพ **Protect Your Furry Family with Pet Insurance** ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’ผ

Pets are family. Right? That's why discussing pet insurance is crucial for dog owners in our vibrant community. Whether it's an unexpected illness or routine care, pet insurance can offer peace of mind and financial security. However, not all pet insurance policies are created equal. It's essential for dog owners to thoroughly review policy terms before making a decision.

Here are three top-rated pet insurance companies, but remember to call each company and review their policy terms in detail:

๐Ÿพ **Healthy Paws**: Known for comprehensive coverage and fast claim processing, Healthy Paws offers customizable deductibles and coverage for preventive care, emergency care, surgeries, dental care, and behavioral services. No cap on reimbursements, and coverage can start immediately. Review waiting periods, exclusions, and breed-specific predisposition diseases/disorders.

๐Ÿพ **Trupanion**: With one simple plan and customizable deductibles, Trupanion covers surgeries, medications, diagnostic tests, and alternative therapies. No payout limit and coverage for unexpected illnesses and accidents. Inquire about waiting periods, coverage limitations, and pre-existing conditions.

๐Ÿพ **Petplan**: Petplan offers comprehensive coverage with customizable deductibles and reimbursement levels for preventive care, emergency care, surgeries, and dental treatments. No caps on reimbursements, and coverage starts immediately. Review waiting periods, exclusions, and pre-existing conditions.

Before selecting a pet insurance policy, dog owners should carefully consider their pet's specific needs and medical history. Comparing quotes and coverage options from multiple providers can help ensure they find the best policy for their furry family member. Discussing breed-specific predisposition diseases/disorders and pre-existing conditions with your vet prior to signing up is crucial, as some pet insurance companies may not cover these conditions. Your vet can help you navigate these complexities and ensure you select a policy that provides the best possible coverage for your dog's health and well-being.

09/05/2024

๐Ÿพ **Finding the Right Dog Walker in Summerlin** ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ•

In the bustling life of Summerlin, finding the right dog walker is paramount to ensuring your pet's happiness and well-being. A skilled and attentive dog walker can play a crucial role in keeping your dog healthy, engaged, and mentally stimulated.

Here are some key considerations when selecting a dog walker:

๐Ÿพ **Handling and Training Methods:**
How do they handle dogs that pull on the leash? Are they experienced with positive reinforcement training methods?

๐Ÿ‘€ **Observation and Rewards:**
Will they allow you to observe them walking your dog? Do they use treats or toys as part of the walk?

๐Ÿ“œ **Licensing and Safety Measures:**
Are they licensed and insured? What measures do they take to ensure the safety of your dog during walks?

๐Ÿ‘ฅ **Experience and References:**
Can they provide references from past clients? What is their experience working with dogs of similar size and temperament?

๐Ÿ“… **Communication and Policies:**
What is their policy regarding cancellations or rescheduling? How do they communicate with pet owners regarding updates or concerns during walks?

Ensuring that the dog walker meets these criteria is essential for the protection of you, your dog, the walker, and the public. Unforeseen incidents can occur when dealing with animals, so having proper insurance coverage and credentials is essential for peace of mind.

While pricing is a factor to consider, investing in a reputable and experienced dog walker may come with a higher price tag. However, the benefits of reliable and professional care for your furry companion can far outweigh the expense in the long run.
