❌ You’re Rewarding the WRONG Thing

This mistake ruins so many training sessions— and most owners don’t even realize it.

You think your dog is responding to your marker word…
But your dog is actually watching your movement.

Here’s what’s really happening:
You: Marker = reward
Your dog: Movement = reward

To fix it?
Say your marker.
Pause.
Then reach for the reward.

That tiny delay makes all the difference.
It teaches your dog the word has value — not your movements/hand in the treat pouch.

Struggling with timing and training results? Book a consultation and let’s get your dog on the right track.

⁉️𝐖𝐈𝐒𝐇 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐃𝐎𝐆 𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐃 𝐃𝐎 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒?⁉️

Let’s be real—there’s nothing more 𝐅𝐑𝐔𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 than a dog that can’t walk politely on a leash.

But here’s the thing:
Walking on a leash is 𝐍𝐎𝐓 natural.
It’s a skill you have to 𝐓𝐄𝐀𝐂𝐇 your dog.

Most people don’t know how to properly teach leash manners—or they expect 𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐓 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐔𝐋𝐓𝐒.

And that combo? It leads to confused, embarrassed, overwhelmed owners…
…who end up holding their dog to a standard they’ve never actually taught.

Sounds kinda crazy when you say it out loud, right? But more importantly—it’s 𝐔𝐍𝐅𝐀𝐈𝐑 to the dog.

In this video, my communication is crystal clear:
“Heel” = walk next to me
“Free” = go ahead and explore (but 𝐍𝐎 pulling)

This is what I teach my clients.
They get to enjoy relaxed, “free” walks and have the structure of “heel” when they need it.

Meanwhile, most owners are being dragged down the street, repeating “heel… heel… Leave it…” while the dog ignores them.
But every single step they take with that tight leash?

They’re actually 𝐑𝐄𝐈𝐍𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐂𝐈𝐍𝐆 the exact behavior they do 𝐍𝐎𝐓 want.

Let’s fix that.

☠️ 𝐌𝐎𝐒𝐓 𝐃𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐄𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐒 𝐓𝐎𝐎𝐋 ☠️

If I asked you to name the most dangerous tool in dog training, I bet 0.0001% would guess this…

𝐋𝐎𝐍𝐆 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐇

This is 𝐍𝐎𝐓 my opinion. This is a 𝐅𝐀𝐂𝐓.

Good luck out there 😂

⁉️𝐂𝐀𝐍 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐃𝐎 𝐈𝐓⁉️

I know this looks simple but can 𝐘𝐎𝐔 do it?

Can you put your dog into any position and communicate whether you want them to hold position or release?

Here’s the kicker…

𝐎𝐍𝐋𝐘 verbal.

No giving visual/physical cues or creating predictable patterns 🤔

This is a good way to know whether your dog truly understands your markers or is cueing off something else.

If you have taught your dog properly, this should be easy.

However, if you weren’t clear when teaching, this might be a mess.

Luckily, even if it doesn’t go as you planned, you can always go backwards and clear things up.

Remember, training is a journey and it will be some trial and error so enjoy it!

❌𝐃𝐎𝐆 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐆𝐔𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐄𝐒❌

So many dog trainers make “guarantees.”

This is 100% 𝐖𝐑𝐎𝐍𝐆 and 𝐔𝐍𝐄𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋.

We have all heard it…

❌ Fix any problem, forever
❌ Transform your dog in 2 weeks
❌ Aggressive dog turned into service dog

𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐏 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐒!!!

Let’s use some logic..

How can a trainer make a guarantee about a dog they have never met? How can they promise you something when they have never even met you and know 𝐍𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆 about your lifestyle?

What I can personally guarantee:

✅ Hardwork/effort
✅ Lifetime of maintenance training
✅ A proven track record
✅ Clear/fair communication to dog and owner

From a consumers perspective, why wouldn’t you pick a business who guarantees their work?

Just know, these trainers are snakes and capitalizing on your 𝐄𝐌𝐎𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒.

If you are looking for a trainer, don’t fall for the marketing schemes. Instead, ask the right questions (several more besides this list):

✅ Can you show your work?
✅ Can you teach me?
✅ What happens when we are struggling?
✅ How are you getting to the root of issues?

If you are a trainer and you make these guarantees, you have 𝐙𝐄𝐑𝐎 respect from me and should highly reconsider your approach.

Happy Monday!

Would Onyx 𝐏𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐘 kill herself if I let her attack a car?

Maybe, maybe not. But it’s 𝐍𝐎𝐓 something I’m willing to find out.

⁉️How would 𝐘𝐎𝐔 address the behavior⁉️

Try your best to use 𝐋𝐎𝐆𝐈𝐂 and think 𝐖𝐇𝐘.

𝐆𝐎𝐀𝐋: To have a happy and 𝐒𝐀𝐅𝐄 dog that can be included in more daily life with her owners.

Potential ways to address behavior:

➡️ Avoid areas with cars/triggers
➡️ Leash correction
➡️ Redirect
➡️ Scatter food
➡️ Medication
➡️ Micromanage
➡️ Remote collar
➡️ Accept it
➡️ Teach alternate behavior
➡️ Strong “leave it”/Obedience
➡️ Euthanasia

Just because you prioritize one option, does 𝐍𝐎𝐓 mean you are against others. I wish that was 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐎𝐌 𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐄 🙃

Important info (it should be):

➡️ Performing behavior for 2+ years
➡️ Potentially life threatening
➡️ Multiple trainers with limited/no change

Don’t make a quick judgement off a 20 sec video, 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐗𝐓 𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒 🤔

And 𝐘𝐄𝐒 to 𝐀𝐋𝐋 of these:

✅ Fulfill her biological needs
✅ Condition tools
✅ Tons of CC/desensitization
✅ Marker system for clear communication
✅ Create strong bond/trust
✅ Change association to triggers. Not cookie cutter, quick fixes

Also, I’m not the trainer who lets a dog perform a behavior for days to get IG 𝐂𝐋𝐈𝐂𝐊𝐒/𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐄𝐒. This was the initial eval and day 0. Everything after, is to work on 𝐈𝐌𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐕𝐈𝐍𝐆 her behavior.

𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝟏 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐂𝐋𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐃𝐎𝐆

Ever wonder what most trainers do right after they pick up a new dog?

I hate to burst your bubble but I’d guess 99% of the time, it’s 𝐍𝐎𝐓 this.

I’ll be the 1% 🙋🏽‍♂️

Many trainers preach structure, boundaries, leadership, etc etc

I talk about those things 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐋𝐘!

However, there is a time and a place for those things and they will 100% come.

Guys, this is a puppy with no serious behavior issues. Having fun, rough housing, letting the dog cut loose can be 𝐁𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐅𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋.

If this dog had any serious behavior issues, this stuff probably wouldn’t happen, at least not yet.

But guess what?

This is a happy go lucky 𝐏𝐔𝐏𝐏𝐘, with a fairly clean slate and we are going to have 𝐅𝐔𝐍!

‼️𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐎𝐍 𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐄 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐑‼️

Did you answer the question…

Can you name 𝐎𝐍𝐄 animal where negative consequence aren’t a part of life?

Unless you thought of an animal that I’ve never heard of, there are 𝐍𝐎𝐍𝐄.

So let’s go back to being 𝐋𝐎𝐆𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋.

If negative consequences are part of life in every living being, 𝐖𝐇𝐘 are dogs supposed to be the exception?

Many folks claim anything aversive is 𝐀𝐁𝐔𝐒𝐄. And these “abusive” actions cause fear, aggression, shutdown dogs, etc.

Anyone with half a brain cell can 𝐂𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐋𝐘 tell the difference between 𝐀𝐁𝐔𝐒𝐄 and a negative consequence/punishment. And to use them as synonyms is 𝐅𝐎𝐎𝐋𝐈𝐒𝐇.

Punishment: is simply +/- something in order to lessen or stop a behavior 🤔

Any person, trainer or not, can agree that abuse has 𝐙𝐄𝐑𝐎 place in dog training.

And I would add that denying the use of proper punishment is living in a fantasy land and is doing a disservice to dogs.

It’s interesting, so many dogs that I train have previously used trainers who 𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐈𝐏𝐔𝐋𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐃 dog owners that purely positive 𝐎𝐍𝐋𝐘 training was their only option and anything else was irresponsible.

If you are looking for a trainer:

➡️ Use 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐎𝐌 𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐄
➡️ Watch your potential trainers work
➡️ Read reviews/talk to previous clients
➡️ Pay attention to how your dog responds

Dog owners, stop treat your dog like babies and treat them for what they are and what they 𝐃𝐄𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐕𝐄. I think you will be surprised on how well they respond.

02/25/2025

⁉️ 𝐖𝐇𝐘 𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇 ⁉️

Do you work on obstacles like this?

Unfortunately, most dog owners don’t see the 𝐕𝐀𝐋𝐔𝐄 in 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐄𝐍𝐆𝐈𝐍𝐆 their dogs.

Examples:

➡️ Uneven surfaces
➡️ Different textures
➡️ Variety of heights

IMO, this helps develop a more stable/𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐅𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐍𝐓 dog, as well as, strengthening the 𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐏 with the owner.

Who doesn’t want that?!

This may seem like a simple obstacle for Kane but I assure you, he didn’t want to do this initially and there was a lot of hesitation.

It would be 𝐀𝐌𝐀𝐙𝐈𝐍𝐆 if I could simply tell him how beneficial this will be for him but clearly there is zero 𝐋𝐎𝐆𝐈𝐂 in that, even though many people do this 😂

Instead, I owe it to him to 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐍 his body language and challenge him, appropriately.

His 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐈𝐓𝐘 isn’t where I’d like it 𝐁𝐔𝐓 it’s a step in the right direction.

Even if this were an easier obstacle, I would still do it. Why wouldn’t I take as many “small” wins as possible?!

Those small wins will add up and help when it’s time to face the harder challenges.

Next time you see a park bench, playground, etc go have some 𝐅𝐔𝐍!

You might be surprised on how many things your dog is 𝐇𝐄𝐒𝐈𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐓 on and the flip side, how many things they may 𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄.

“𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐂𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆” 𝐀 𝐃𝐎𝐎𝐃𝐋𝐄 𝐏𝐔𝐏𝐏𝐘

I’m really not doing that but was hoping it would grab your attention 🤷🏻‍♂️

Did you know that e collars do 𝐍𝐎𝐓 magically teach your dog what you want/don’t want 🤯

I wish everyone knew that was 𝐒𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐀𝐒𝐌 but unfortunately that’s not the case.

This video is showing the 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐒𝐓 of several steps in 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐋𝐘 using the tool.

My goal is to find the lowest level he feels, nothing more and nothing less.

This should 𝐍𝐎𝐓 be painful or overly stressful.

Matcha’s reaction was no different than if a bug landed on him, perfect.

All the safely, earned 𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐃𝐎𝐌 coming to Matcha asap, with the help of this tool 💪🏽

As always, if you need 𝐀𝐍𝐘 help with this process and you don’t feel 100% confident, ask me personally or find a trainer who can 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐖 you their work.

‼️ 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐌𝐄𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐃 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐘𝐎𝐔 ‼️

Struggling getting your dog to 𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐀𝐗 in public?

Here is something you probably haven’t tried.

➡️ 𝐂𝐀𝐏𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆 ⬅️

This is simply reinforcing a behavior that your dog offers on their own.

If you choose to try this, you will need 𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄.

Along with patience, it’s crucial to pick a controlled 𝐄𝐍𝐕𝐈𝐑𝐎𝐍𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓.

For example, if your dog gets over aroused by dogs, I probably wouldn’t try this right outside the dogpark.

I personally choose this method when trying to capture “down.”

And to confuse you even more, it’s not even about the “down” at all 🤔

⁉️How many anxious, over aroused, fearful dogs do you know that would 𝐂𝐇𝐎𝐎𝐒𝐄 to lie down⁉️

𝐙𝐄𝐑𝐎

On the flip side, how many dogs do you know when 𝐏𝐔𝐓 in a “down” command are still anxious, over aroused, and fearful?

𝐓𝐎𝐍𝐒

Focus on your dogs mind and watch how the body follows 🤯

02/21/2025

⁉️How do 𝐘𝐎𝐔 socialize your dog⁉️

Let me help you clear up a few things that will make life with your dog much more 𝐄𝐍𝐉𝐎𝐘𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐄.

What 𝐒𝐎𝐂𝐈𝐄𝐓𝐘 says socialization is:

❌ Saying hi to all people
❌ Going nose to nose w/every dog
❌ Dog doing whatever, whenever they choose

What 𝐑𝐄𝐏𝐔𝐓𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐄 trainers say:

✅ Neutrality/Coexisting
✅ Confidence in variety of environments
✅ Advocating for your dogs space

Quite the 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐒𝐓, huh?

If you are a believer of the ❌’s and it works for you, I’m happy for you. But remeber, it’s not a matter of 𝐈𝐅 something bad will happen but 𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐍.

Consistently doing ❌’s will create an 𝐄𝐗𝐏𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 that your dog 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃𝐒 to interact with everything.

Human analogy:

Your child gets candy at the check out aisle over and over again. This time you are in a hurry and you tell your kid no.

Your child proceeds to have 𝐌𝐄𝐋𝐓𝐃𝐎𝐖𝐍 bc you have created an expectation that the checkout aisle = candy.

See how creating certain expectations/patterns for your dog might be cute at the beginning but will eventually backfire 🤔

Most people unknownly teach dog/person = excitement/over arousal

Good luck with that 😂

Creating the expectations is 𝐍𝐎𝐓 even the worst part…

Don’t even get me started on how these can potentially turn into 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐈𝐓𝐘 or even 𝐀𝐆𝐆𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍🤔

Why do I talk about this so often?

Because it’s one of the most common issues dog owners face and it can be addressed with a 𝐒𝐈𝐌𝐏𝐋𝐄 mindset change.

Also, he wasn’t in a “down.” He was able to get up whenever he chose.

❤️ 𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐔𝐈𝐍𝐄 𝐌𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 ❤️

I hope you experience something like this throughout your week 🙏🏽

Maybe someone goes out of their way to give you a helping hand.

Maybe 𝐘𝐎𝐔 help someone 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐓 expecting something in return.

TBH, I 𝐑𝐀𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐘 help people with their dogs at the park.

Unfortunately, this stems from so many people being ungrateful or blowing me off over the years when trying to lend a hand.

But let’s stay 𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐄 and talk about Denise and her dog, Max.

Max was playing Denise like a fiddle and don’t get me wrong, it was funny but not for Denise.

It was clear she wanted help, so I figured it should be be versus someone in the dog park 🤷🏻‍♂️

As I approached them, Max was up and ready to go in literally 1 second with some simple spatial pressure, not one word spoken 🤔

Denise thought I was a magician and then you saw a 𝐒𝐌𝐀𝐋𝐋 clip of our entire conversation.

Let me clarify, when she said I gave her tips/tricks, that’s 𝐍𝐎𝐓 what I do.

I made sure she understood training Max is more than tricks/tips. Instead, it’s about understanding 𝐏𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐂𝐈𝐏𝐋𝐄𝐒/𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐏𝐓𝐒 that will give them longterm success.

Guys, this is what it’s all about, 𝐇𝐄𝐋𝐏𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐏𝐄𝐎𝐏𝐋𝐄.

No matter what your job, how much money you make, what you drive, how good looking you are, how many degrees you have, or how busy you are…

Don’t forget, we 𝐀𝐋𝐋 need help sometimes ❤️

‼️ 𝐄 𝐂𝐎𝐋𝐋𝐀𝐑 𝐍𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐄 ‼️

Most of us have heard 𝐇𝐎𝐑𝐑𝐎𝐑 stories about e collars, right?

And sometimes, rightfully so.

Dick and Sally see an “influencer” using an e collar online so they order one off Amazon for $40, not having a clue what they are doing.

The “influencer” failed to communicate or Dick and Sally made the assumption that their dog would automatically understand English because of the magical tool.

See how ridiculous that sounds?!

But people believe it!

Guys, 𝐀𝐋𝐋 tools need conditioned. However, there are 𝐈𝐑𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐏𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐈𝐁𝐋𝐄/𝐂𝐋𝐔𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 dog owners/𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐒 that think the e collar is an exception. And we wonder why it has such a bad reputation 🤦🏻‍♂️

Prerequisites:
✅ Charged marker
✅ Understands leash pressure
✅ Lowest level perceived on e collar

It’s our 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐏𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐈𝐁𝐈𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘 to 𝐓𝐄𝐀𝐂𝐇 the dog what the e collar means.

How I do it it:

E collar ➡️ leash guidance ➡️ mark and reward

Soon, it will be 𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐍𝐈𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐄 that the dog understands 𝐄𝐗𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐋𝐘 what the e collar means and I will layer verbal communication over it.

If you need 𝐀𝐍𝐘 help with this process and you don’t feel 100% confident, ask me personally or find a trainer who can 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐖 you their work.

BarNone K9 Bio

I am Robert “Robi” Taylor, owner of BarNone K9, LLC. Like most, my love for dogs began at an early age. I had three golden retrievers growing up, but it was not until I was 29 years old that I acquired my own dog, Nala. Little did I know; my life was about to change dramatically. To be honest, I was clueless on how to properly train my dog. I became obsessed with learning anything and everything I could to teach my puppy. I became so consumed with dogs that I began to volunteer at local shelters, obtain apprenticeships, work with police dogs (including taking bites), and anything else that would benefit me as a dog enthusiast. My passion for learning about dogs was growing each day and I knew I wanted to take the next step and turn my passion into a career. As I was concluding my career in the United States Air Force, I was certain of the path I was going to pursue. I enrolled into the most accredited dog training school, StarMark Academy in Austin, Texas. Upon finishing the academy, I was selected for their apprenticeship program. During my nine-month apprenticeship, I had the opportunity to expand my experience with training over 300 dogs in agility, behavior modifications, dock diving, obedience training from novice to advanced, nosework, trick training, and much more! Upon returning to Las Vegas, I considered working for a big-box dog training facility where I could continue to gain experience, while feeling "safe." Very quickly, I realized that wasn’t for me and I could offer so much more to the dog community by working on my own. It was then I decided to open BarNone K9 and I haven’t looked back! Since opening BarNone K9, I have continued my education by attending another major accredited k9 school, multiple seminars, and online classes. Most notably I graduated from American K9 Interdiction where I earned the title “Certified Patrol/Explosives Dog Trainer.”
