Saturday’s agility classes had a Halloween Agility Pawty! They had a spooktacular Grounders course with straw bales instead of barrels. Practicing with new distractions is a great way to proof your runs. Teams were tested with ghosts 👻, pumpkins 🎃, and bats🦇. It was super fun and adorable to watch.

“Working on heel positioning with Winnie. She’s been struggling with swinging her butt out when she sits so we are trying to teach her that she needs to sit straight and parallel. It’s not perfect but she’s made huge progress. There’s a million ways to teach this positioning...you can stand against a wall to help prevent the dog from swinging out, you can use body pressure, leash pressure, luring etc. Here I use treat luring, a little leash pressure and some body pressure. She’s made such improvements in the last two weeks with this!” - @mara_trains_dogs

“Bailee and I working on her “wait in motion”. If I say “wait” she should stop and wait until I call her back into a heel...all this is done WHILE I keep moving. She can sit, stand or down...I don’t care, as long as she stops. I use leash pressure to communicate that I want a wait. Its important that dogs understand regardless if im moving or stationary, if i say a command, they need to do it. She’s doing REALLY well at this one considering we only started it a few days ago! “This is Zoey. She’s a reactive dog. I would probably put her towards the more severe side of reactivity and she’s not a huge fan of other dogs. There’s nothing wrong with dogs not liking other dogs and it’s okay for your dogs to have feelings about them but they aren’t allowed to over react when they see these things.
This was my first day working with Zoey at boot camp. She absolutely needed a switch up of tools. Harnesses in this case will not work and potentially make the reactivity worse. You’ll have no control over the dog at that point. The end goal is to teach structure and boundaries while walking. If your dog can’t even walk nice on a leash...you can’t even start working on the reactivity. Obedience is also a first step...no, it doesn’t fix reactivity but working on Obedience and structure helps you build a bond and relationship with your dog, which in the end can help you and your dog work through reactive training. If your dog doesn’t respect you, trust you or listen to you the second you step out your front door...then you need to work on those things first.
Regardless, you’ll see here we are working with a prong for the first time. I let her figure it out, I don’t yank her, I don’t give harsh corrections but she learns if she steps out of place, it’s a little uncomfortable. She gets rewarded for sits and some calm behavior. And even though we are in a fairly low distraction area, she’s STILL on edge, she’s STILL scanning and looking for potential threats. The end goal is make her more “chill” on walks with more exposure training, because then I can work her through her doggie issues.
I will say by the end of the day, I had her walking pretty nicely and I could even have her by other dogs without her trying to go for them. But of course, things have to be consistent to make sure she can do that EVERY time she goes out.
Reactive dog training takes a lot of time and patience and I know it can be frustrating. B
