We have several French Angoras, and Jersey Wooly buns. We ALSO have a grand champion Himalayan named Justin and a SERIOUSLY perfect little Holland Lop we call Squishy Bear/Squish/Bear. I feel spoiled by these 2 little fellas because no wool to matte! If you are beginning in buns, it’s probably easier to start with a fur rabbit just for maintenance reasons. They still require a comb out and attention with their nails and keeping an eye on general health, but, it’s not the same universe as our floofy buns…well, angoras. I still say woolies are waaaay less work than an angora.
I won’t lie - I am going to keep an eye out for a good Himalayan doe. I wouldn’t mind expanding on them a bit! They are one of the oldest breeds of rabbits. Many popular breeds are decendents of this one, like the Californian. Justin’s markings were almost all light grey in the heat this summer (even in the a/c), as it’s gotten cooler, they are going back to black! That’s another interesting thing about this breed, their nose, ears and boots will darken in the cold. They are also the only ‘cylindrical’ breed of rabbit recognized by ARBA. They pose completely flat (legs tucked under themselves) and look like a loaf of bread on the table. They don’t get over 4.5 lbs…so a small breed too. Great for a first time bun!
