Thank you, everyone, for your outpouring of kindness in the wake of Sugar’s passing. It brings me to tears every time I think of how widely loved this little cat with only 1.5 legs was, and what an impact she had in her short time here. 💕

I have one last request on Sugar’s behalf - before she passed, she was nominated in two categories for Best of Lawrence: Social Media (Animal) and Shop (Or Office) Pet. Sugar was nominated the last two years as well. She won 3rd place her first year and 2nd place last year. She never lobbied for votes, she just quietly did her work. But this year, I’d love to have her win first place and close out her journey. So I’m asking you to vote for her and encourage others to do so as well. Voting ends tomorrow and there’s still time to get our girl to #1!

Vote directly for Sugar in her two categories at these two links:

I’ve put off writing this post because I just didn’t have the words, and to be honest, I still don’t. I am so sorry to say that last Saturday, May 27, Sugar passed away. She wasn’t sick or unwell, her heart just stopped. Our vet assures us that it was quick and she didn’t suffer. Nonetheless, our hearts are broken.

Sugar lived a truly extraordinary life. She was brought to Lawrence Humane Society by neighbors of her former owners, who had moved and left their cats behind. With only 1 and 1/2 legs, Sugar survived living outside on her own for God knows how long. She was only 2 lbs, covered in fleas, and angry. But when she got to the shelter, her world immediately changed. I brought her home to foster and she found herself with cat and dog siblings, loved, and treated like royalty. She thrived, gaining much needed weight and having the best time playing with her new siblings. We knew she was there to stay, so my husband and I adopted Sugar. I began to bring her to work everyday and she became Sugar, the Community Resource Cat. She had her own little office, met all kinds of animals that came into the Pet Resource Center, and became the feline face of Lawrence Humane through the Gimme Some Sugar shirts, proving to all, as the shirt said, “there’s nothing sweeter than adoption.”

About a year and a half ago, we moved to a new house with carpet and Sugar got to become a “normal” cat - she ran, leapt in the air, and chased her siblings around. At that point, she retired from the office and mostly from her social media life. She had the opportunity to have some normalcy in her life and I wanted to let her have that. I assure you though, she was so, so happy. And we got endless amusement watching her have zoomies and keep up with her four-legged siblings.

While the first part of her life was awful, the last 2 and 1/2 years of her life were nothing but pure joy and love. Sugar had her own catio, she rode in her stroller all around KU, she sent holiday cards to her many various friends, and was illustrated by multiple artists. She lives on through every animal adopted from Lawrence Humane. Thank you all for loving our Sugar so much and making her part of this community. ❤️
