In case the Georgia heat and humidity wasn’t enough to say it, we are officially in the summer months and today is the Summer Solstice.
Here are a few tips for keeping your pets happy and healthy this summer season!
Beat the heat- provide pets with access to fresh water and shade and make sure never to leave a pet in a closed vehicle. For extra precautions take a shoe off and leave it in the back seat to make sure you never forget your furry friend. Try adding a kiddie sized swimming pool to your backyard for a little extra fun cooling off. Take extra precautions with the flat-faced breeds that can overheat quicker than others. It is best to play with your pets in the morning before the temperature rises or in the evening whether they are inside or outside.
Water Safety - not all dogs and cats can swim. If you are visiting the beach, lake, or a pool come prepared with a life jacket. Even the best swimmers can get tired or fall off of docks, boats etc. If you have a pool and your pet is missing make sure to check there first and call neighbors that have pools. Too many pets get into pools and panic and can’t find their way out. If visiting the beach keep in mind that the sand is hot and the currents can be too much for your pup. Rinse them off at the end of the day so as not to irritate their skin.
Travel tips - make sure your pet is up to date on their vaccines and you have a copy of those in case you need them. Also make sure your microchip and collar tag contact info is current in case they were to get lost. When traveling in a car it is safest for your pets and for other humans to restrain your pet in a pet crate or with a harness in the event of an accident. Take frequent breaks for your pet to get out energy, have some fresh water, and to use the restroom.
Party Etiquette - not all pets are super social. If you are going to a party or having one at your house consider keeping the fur babies at home and providing an area where they can get away from

Heartworms...preventable, but still a major health concern in the US. Dogs, cats, and ferrets are at risk for heartworm disease and, if untreated, it is usually fatal.

Recently one of our fur parents gifted Dr. Pope with this Georgia sign, since he is a Dawg after all.
Little did we know it was sabotaged by a Tech fan!
GOOOOOO DAWGS!
Weight Loss & Weight Maintenance For Pets
A recent study showed that in the last decade there has been a 114% increase in cats diagnosed as overweight or obese, and a 108% increase in dog obesity during the same time frame.
Obesity increases the risk of cancer, diabetes, hip dysplasia, and many other serious health conditions. 93% of people surveyed said they faced hurdles in maintaining a healthy weight for their pet.
What can you do to make weight loss easier on you and your pet?
Atlas lovins
Everyone knows dogs (and cats!) are man's best friend. They bring us comfort, make us laugh, and give us something to look forward to. It's no wonder why 70% of Americans owned one or more pets in 2020.
Atlas helps us remember to be thankful for our time together <3
What does your pet make you thankful for? Let us know in the comments!
Earlier this week we discussed how pets are often surrendered due to behavioral issues. One behavioral issue for cats is peeing and pooping outside of the box.
Here are a few things that can cause that issue.
1. Cats outside of your home. Cats are territorial and they like their space. Like @simonscatofficial in the video, sometimes cats outside of the home can lead your pet to mark inside the home near doors and windows. Try limiting visibility of other cats by putting up blinds or curtain or by placing litter boxes away from windows. You can also deter outdoor cats from coming near your windows by making sure you aren’t leaving food outside, buying a motion activated pet deterrent, or making your own cat repellent (make sure it isn’t toxic).
2. Choose litter carefully. Pick something that is low dust, clumps, and has no fragrance. Sometimes these things can irritate our feline friends.
3. Location, location, location. We already mentioned having one box per cat plus one. Do not place litter boxes right next to each other. They need to be spread out around the home and in low traffic areas with little noise.
4. No lids. While lids help to keep smells down in the home they can actually make cats feel trapped. If they get scared while in the box by a loud noise or another pet who is preventing them from getting out this could deter them from using the litter box all together.
5. Medical issues. Your pet could have a urinary tract infection or other underlying medical issues that could be causing problems. When in doubt call your vet.

Hey Dr. Pope!
We are starting a new segment called, "Hey, Dr. Pope!" This segment will be a way for you to ask light-hearted, informational questions to Dr. Pope. For example, "Why does my cat knock things off the table?", "What do you mean Fluffy doesn't have a bladder?", "What is lepto and why does Scruffy need a vaccine for it?".
Please keep in mind, this is not a way to try to diagnose your pet without an exam. This will be fun, sometimes funny, and informational and hopefully will answer some general quesitons you may have about the day-to-day life in a veterinary practice.
We would love to get you involved! If you, your family, friends, or pets have a question post it in the comments and watch the next episode of "Hey, Dr. Pope!" to see your answer!
Today is a special day - be sure to wish Dr. Pope a very Happy Birthday!
