If you're able, come on out to the The Dogs' Spot - Dog Training Center and Boutique to the Santa Paws Holiday Mart today from 10am to 3pm! Be very careful driving, as the roads are not great. I'm still stuck in traffic and will be late, but I'll get there as soon as possible and get set up for canine massages!

🎉Winning Way is proud to welcome our newest addition - massage therapist, Haley Milum! 🎉

Haley was born and raised in the Kansas City area. She attended college at Rockhurst University where she graduated with a degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders and Spanish. Haley also received a Master’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Rockhurst University and began working as a Speech Language Pathologist.

Haley has always loved animals. She and her family owned horses during her childhood, and she has been involved in the equine community for several years. She has worked to provide care to horses at local barns, assisted with lessons, and enjoyed learning about horses’ behavior patterns.

She was able to purchase her own horse in 2021. Her mare, Shay, is her pride and joy whom she spends the majority of her free time with when she isn’t with her family. Haley learned more about the world of equine massage when her horse began to have intermittent lameness issues and hypersensitivity. Through her own personal journey with her horse, Haley found massage to be an invaluable tool in maximizing the wellness, comfort, and performance of her horse.

Haley is a certified equine sports massage therapist and is completing her canine massage certification as well. She plans to continue her educational journey through attendance of clinics and courses to further provide techniques paramount to aiding horses and dogs alike to feel their very best!

Please watch this (heads up that there is a portion of a dissection in this video, but it is an excellent visual!)...EVERY rider, owner and ESPECIALLY trainers, should KNOW what happens when a horse is repeatedly ridden behind the vertical.

In addition, that nuchal ligament that is shown in the dissection portion, continues on down the length of the horse's body (changing names around the wither area to the supraspinous ligament, and connects/attaches to the sacrum. When a horse is behind the vertical, that ligament pulls the horse's pelvis forward, prohibiting the hind legs reaching under the horse's body, which is our goal, right? In all disciplines, we want the motion to come from behind! But if the hind legs are trailing behind, the motion does NOT come from behind. You end up with a horse who hollows their back, hocks and stifles take unnecessary stress, the lower cervicals are also stressed, the thoracic sling lowers, horse goes very heavy in front, and those suspensories are also stressed, both front and back!

This was a fantastic session I was able to attend, and even had a picture snapped of the Morgan mare, who was very interested in the pads I was holding! It was amazing how much her behavior changed (for the positive) after realizing how good she felt on them. If you haven't looked into the Sure Foot pads, I highly suggest doing so! Very cool tool to have!
