Meet Luke – The Cutest Little Stud Muffin!

Luke is a 2-year-old heeler x pit mix (our best guess!), but whatever his breed, one thing is certain—he’s an adorable, stocky little powerhouse with a big personality. Sadly, we don’t know anything about his past, as he was found abandoned in one of our kennels overnight. We wish we at least knew his name, but what we do know is that Luke is an incredible dog who deserves a loving home.

Since arriving in November, Luke has won us over with his sweet, affectionate nature. He absolutely adores people, attention, toys, and playtime. He’s the kind of dog who will happily soak up all the love you have to give. However, he’s also a strong-willed and driven boy who needs someone experienced and capable of channeling his energy in the right direction. Luke hasn’t had much structure in his life, so he’ll thrive with an owner who can provide clear boundaries and guidance to help him reach his full potential.

Because of his high drive and strong personality, Luke would do best as the only pet in the home. Meet Bella & Sally! 🐾💕

Bella and Sally are two sweet, happy-go-lucky puppies looking for their forever homes! These adorable girls were the last remaining puppies from an unwanted litter, and while their previous owners say they are 3 month old, Bernese Mountain Dog mixes, their exact breed blend is a mystery. What isn’t a mystery, though, is how lovable and full of potential they are!

Like most puppies, Bella and Sally are blank slates, ready to learn and grow into wonderful companions. Right now, they’re feeling a bit scared and overwhelmed in the kennel environment, but with patience, love, and reassurance, their playful, affectionate personalities will continue to shine. Meet Jordan – A Loving Boy Who Just Needs a Chance!

Jordan is a 3-year-old Border Collie x Lab mix who has been waiting far too long for his forever family. He just passed his two-year anniversary of his initial surrender, making him one of our longest residents. It’s heartbreaking because he’s such a happy, loving, and energetic dog, but he keeps getting overlooked. Did you know that black pets are 40% less likely to get adopted as compared to lighter colored or interestingly marked pets?

Its a phenomenon called Black Dog Syndrome in the rescue world. Many black-coated dogs and cats in shelters have a harder time getting adopted simply because of their color. They often don’t stand out as much in photos, can be perceived as "less friendly" due to outdated myths, and sadly, they tend to get passed by in favor of lighter-colored dogs. It can even be said the same for drawing attention on social media (likes, shares, and comments). It’s an unfair reality, and Jordan is proof that a great dog can go unnoticed just because of the way he looks.

In his time with us, Jordan has been adopted twice, but unfortunately, both situations just weren’t the right fit. The first time, was very brief- it turned out he wasn't too fond of sharing a home with cats. His second home was for several months- but his playful and mischievous nature got the best of him—without any containment, he had a habit of wandering off, "borrowing" items from the neighbors, and proudly bringing them home. He’s got a big personality and a curious mind, so he needs a home that can give him structure and clear expectations.

Despite his setbacks, Jordan has remained an incredibly sweet, fun-loving, and affectionate dog. He plays well with other dogs. He truly loves everyone and everything, and he’s eager to be part of a family that will finally give him the stability and training he needs. Jordan is high-energy and would do best in an active home that can provide plenty of exercise, mental stimulation, and a secure space where he can safely enjoy life.

This boy has waited long enough. He doesn’t need perfection—just a family who will love him, work with him, and give him the chance he deserves. Meet Ruffus – A Busy Boy with a Big Personality!

Ruffus is a 2-year-old pointer mix who has been with us since April of last year, and as he approaches his one-year anniversary at the shelter, he’s hoping to find his forever home. Originally found as a stray, not much is known about Ruffus’s past, but we do know that he’s a little guy with a huge personality. He’s got a lot of energy and a curiosity that’s boundless. There’s always something for Ruffus to do—whether it’s investigating new smells, checking out every corner of the shelter, or meeting new people. He’s constantly on the move and always up for an adventure!

Though Ruffus can be selective about his dog friends, he has been with other dogs in the past and with the right introduction and a dog that respects his space, we believe he could do just fine in a home with other dogs. Meet Sampson! We guess him to be a 1-year-old Dutch Shepherd mix with a big heart and an even bigger personality. Weighing in at about 70 pounds, he might seem a little intimidating at first, but beneath his large frame is a sweet and enthusiastic pup who loves everyone he meets. Unfortunately, Sampson was surrendered by his original owner because his excitement for life got the best of him—he just loved the chickens a little too much! Since arriving in our care in October, we’ve seen his true potential as a loving companion, but also recognize that he’s still very much a puppy at heart—energetic, playful, and eager to please.

❝Hi there, I’m Optimus Prime—but you can call me Opti!

Yeah, yeah, I know what you’re thinking. That’s a BIG name for a dog. But before you go teasing me, just know that my boy gave me this name, and it means the world to me. So I wear it with pride.❞

Meet Opti! He has been with us since last August, and shelter life has not been easy for him. This one-year-old hound mix came to us when his family had nowhere else to go and, heartbreakingly, couldn’t take him along. He didn’t understand why everything he knew suddenly changed, and since then, he’s struggled to adjust. Some dogs bounce back quickly, but for a soft-hearted, sensitive soul like Optimus, the transition has been much harder.

Unlike some of the more outgoing dogs at the shelter, Optimus isn’t the type to rush up to new people with a wagging tail. He watches from a distance, unsure if he should trust. It’s not that he doesn’t want to make friends—he just doesn’t always know how. He needs time, patience, and someone willing to show him that he’s safe. Once he does warm up, though, he’s incredibly gentle and deeply loyal, forming a bond that makes every bit of that patience worthwhile.

Before coming to the shelter, Optimus lived in a home with children, cats, and other dogs, and he did well with all of them. He’s always been a follower, happiest when he has a confident dog by his side to show him the ropes. In fact, we’ve noticed that he thrives in the presence of another dog—one who can help guide him and remind him that the world isn’t so scary after all.

The shelter environment has been particularly tough on him. The constant noise, unfamiliar faces, and ever-changing routines have made it hard for him to feel secure. He never really settled in here, and we know that he won’t truly come out of his shell until he’s in a home again—one that’s calm, understanding, and willing to let him adjust at his own pace.

Optimus isn’t a dog for someone looking for instant companionship. He’s for someone with a patient heart, someone who understands that trust is something to be earned. But for the right person—the one who sees him, truly sees him—Optimus will be the most devoted, loving companion. We all love him dearly here at the shelter, and we believe there’s a special family out there willing to take a chance on him. Could that be you?

Poor Dipper just can’t seem to catch a break! But we just know his perfect forever family is out there waiting for him! This 2.5-year-old hound mix has been through more homes than any dog should, and yet, he remains the happiest, most loving pup.

Dipper first came to us in November 2023 when his original owner was forced to surrender him due to a change in their lease’s pet policy. Not long after, he was adopted into a new home, but unfortunately, his owner’s work schedule changed, leaving them unable to give Dipper the time and attention he needed. When he was adopted again, we hoped this would be his final, happy ending—but just a couple of months later, his family had to move and couldn’t take him along. Now, Dipper is back with us, still waiting for the loving, committed family he truly deserves.

Despite everything, Dipper remains an absolute joy to be around! He has a fantastic personality—outgoing, affectionate, and always ready to engage with his people. He’s playful and energetic, with a special love for toys and treats (he’s highly food-motivated, which makes training a breeze!). Throughout his life, he has lived with children, other dogs, cats, and even livestock—and he’s done well with all of them. He’s a social butterfly who loves car rides, exploring new places, and making new friends.

Dipper does need a little help with leash manners—he’s a "pedal to the metal" kind of guy who gets excited to go on adventures. But with consistency and training, he’ll be an excellent walking or hiking companion.

Claws and Paws would like to give a little shout out to our community. A few days ago a shelter in Illinois was hit with a large amount of puppies and reached out for help. So many of you have stopped by or called to check if it was our shelter and offering to help/foster dogs. While we're thankful it was not in fact our shelter we're overly ecstatic about the calls and drop bys offering to help.

Wendy and her buddy were picked up by animal control and never claimed, so we don't know much about her history up until this point. But it's very plain to see that she is full of love, energy, and excitement for life. Her friend has already been adopted, and hopefully now it's Wendy's turn to find the forever home she deserves.

Big Mac is a 3-4-year-old husky x shepherd mix (our best guess!) with a personality as big as his name. He was found hanging around a McDonald’s, hoping for a snack and some friendly company, and now he’s looking for something even better—a forever home!
