This litter has been more stress than any other litter before. Between the stress of around the clock bottle feedings, Sadie deciding early she wasn’t down with cleaning up after them way earlier than normal, and these puppies being more active than normal at their age I am TIRED, and for sure panicked and nervous and overwhelmed. I noticed when Sadie’s pups were about a week old that Cupid was no longer gaining weight like his siblings and he was in real danger of not surviving if I didn’t step in and help. After some hours of watching him interact with his mom and siblings, I realized he was having a very difficult time latching on to nurse. I checked for a cleft pallet and his anatomy was fine, he just wasn’t getting the nipple far enough back in his mouth to correctly latch. I took him to the vet to confirm and he agreed that Cupid was healthy in every other way and the best option was to supplement with formula. We started with a medicine dropper and small meals every 2 hours around the clock and slowly but surely his weight began to increase. Finally, after a week of sleepless nights he started accepting the bottle and he’s up to one full ounce every 3 hours. While it’s tiring work, and I feel like I’m the mother of a brand new baby complete with midnight feedings and burpings, very few things in life have been as rewarding as watching him grow and thrive when all odds were stacked against him. I love this sweet boy and his spunky personality and I’m so grateful I’ve been able to love and nurture him.
