JR Root I enjoy working with all kinds of riders and horses. My goal for each one of my students is to build trust and understanding between rider and horse.

I was born in south Texas in the mid 50s and spent my early life in Colorado where I watched both my father and grandfather handle horses. My grandfather was an authentic cowboy born before the Civil War who spent his entire life training and fixing outlaw horses. Watching my grandfather and then my father work young and older horses, I noticed that their gentle way of handling them was a stark co

ntrast to other cowboys I had witnessed. This gentle horsemanship netted great results with the horses and thus it became the style I emulated. Like my father and grandfather, I gradually obtained a reputation as a trainer especially skilled with troubled horses. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) recognized this and hired me to work with a herd of rescued horses that were stabled at the Nashville fairgrounds. I enjoy working with all kinds of riders and horses, not just the troubled ones. The end result is then a happy rider and a happy horse.
