Yarrow “Double Diamond Pearl”

The Pearl is a relative of common yarrow and was popular during the Victorian era. From pollinator attractor to medicinal plant and cut flower, this highly ornamental herb plays many roles. Plants reach 2-3 feet tall and produce gobs of cheerful white pompoms, which are alluring to many small pollinators. The Latin name Achillea is a reference to the healing properties of the plant, as it is said that the soldiers commanded by Greek mythological warrior Achilles used yarrow to treat their wounds. Also a versatile cut flower, it can be used fresh or dried as an everlasting.

The name translates to “cherry blossom song” or “song of the cherry blossom,” and indeed these soft pink petals have the look of a cherry blossom, with perhaps an even better fragrance! This Japanese variety reaches about 35-40 inches tall with a robust and floriferous single stalk. The edible blooms are scented like sweet clove! We love to add the fresh petals to salads, or use them to impart a beautiful color to baked goods and rice! This is our favorite edible flower!

Early flowering type. The beautiful, ruffled petals of this cherry-red, spray type stock set at the top of sturdy stems. Plants reach 32 inches tall, producing multiple branches with blooms at the top of the stem. A sublime choice for arranging, the blooms emit an enchanting clove-like fragrance. Stock is a very charming cousin of the cabbage, and the flowers are edible and quite delicious. These tasty little flowers can be used as a natural food dye and flavoring. We have used them to dye everything from rice to cookies, and they are great tossed fresh into salads.

Somedays i wish I was solely a fall/winter/spring gardener. I just processed a bunch of tomatoes on Sunday and I already have a bunch more 😅 a volunteer pumpkin plant resulted in 11 pints of pumpkin puree, and I just retrieved my chaos potatoes. When my roommates let potatoes go bad on the counter I just put them in the dirt😂

What’s on your Late Summer/Fall wishlist?

I’m going to seed one more round of short season summer veggies/herbs and some cutting flowers . I harvested the BIGGEST & SWEETEST Orange Watermelon in November of last year! There’s still PLENTY of time!

Plus I’m trying to plan on starting fall season seeds in about a month! What do y’all want to see?

Also I’m out of 1gal. Nursery pots 😅 any pot hoarders hanging around? Will trade for plants 🪴

About to start seeds for second round of summer veg!

Here in the Central San Joaquin it is normal to do (2) rounds of tomatoes! The high 100s heat will cause your first round of tomatoes to drop blossoms. You should be able to harvest summer veggies well into November!!

Don’t forget in the 559 we have year-round garden seasons!!

Thank you all for being patient with me while I’ve been going through recovery from my hip surgery, and I’ll probably be back at the Visalia Farmers Market on Thursday Nights in August. I’m blessed to have a partner that has helped me with these operations and kept my plants alive in the meantime (he’s literally superman).
