Coton de Tulear dogs are best for stay-at-home and less active parents who can spend ample time with their pups as well as families with children and other pets. Homes with a fenced yard are a plus. First-time pet parents will do well with Coton's too.

What is the difference between the Coton de Tulear and a Maltese?

But they differ in size. Male Cotons de Tulear can weigh nine to 15 pounds and stand 10-11 inches high at the shoulder, whereas Maltese are under seven pounds and only seven to nine inches tall. Plus, the Maltese is a member of the Toy Group and the Coton a member of the Non-Sporting Group.

The reason why these little dogs are Rare..
The original dogs, named Cotons de Reunion, are extinct. Prior to their extinction, the dogs settled on the island and bred with local terrier-type dogs, resulting in Coton de Tulear dogs. The Merina tribe in Madagascar closely guarded the breed from the 17th century. Nobles and French royalty later acquired the dogs.May 27, 2017
