I seem to need to post this once every couple years, but it is important and a reminder for everyone. Getting a puppy is always an exciting thing and I know there is an urge to go out and get a puppy right away when you decide you want one. I urge you though to do everything in your power to get a puppy ethically.

If you are someone that wants a rescue and are in a position to help a rescue and take on the history that comes with that, then find a reputable non profit rescue that is looking out for the best interest of the rescue dogs/puppies.

If you are looking for a breeder then do your due diligence and make sure that they are a reputable breeder. This means asking questions like what health testing was done on the parents (breed related health testing can be found on any breed club page or OFA and Paw Print Genetics, or other lab, list all breed related disease testing). It means asking where the puppies are raised. I means asking how they are socialized. It means asking if they are getting a thorough vet check and vaccines from a veterinarian at bare minimum. It means them getting dewormed. Bonus points if there are more than these things done.

I hear so many people say they went to a breeders house and the dogs were all in a barn or outside or in the house but laying in their own filth all the time or the breeder let the puppies go at 6 weeks old or the parents had no health testing at all or the breeder said they were health tested and when asking for those results they admit they meant they saw a veterinarian once for a health check. A vet check is not the same thing as health testing like testing hips, elbows, cardiac, PRA, etc.

Many people see these things, then still decide to get a puppy from this person because they are 'rescuing' the puppy. I want to be very clear, when you get a puppy from these kind of places, you are not rescuing the puppy, you are 100% giving money to that person, so they can continue to produce more puppies and put more puppies through that. If you want to rescue a puppy, go to a non profit rescue, that the 'breeder' that is doing things unethically will eventually drop off any puppies they don't sell to. The only way to stop unethical breeders is to stop purchasing puppies from them. I know you mean well to take that one puppy off that person's property, but you are only helping another one be abused.

I know that many of these unethical 'breeders' have lower prices and availability right away. There is a reason for that. Good breeders have waiting lists and spend thousands of dollars every year on health testing, socializing, veterinary care, good food, vitamins, socializing, training and more. There puppies cost more for sure, but their puppies also have less health issues and less behavioural issues stemming from being raised in a bad environment with parents that are not temperament evaluated and health tested.

Please do the right thing and either research and buy from a reputable, ethical breeder or go to a rescue and help a puppy or dog in need. Both are wonderful things to do and fit different families in different positions in life. Buying from someone breeding dogs purely for profit with no care for the welfare of the puppy or adult dogs is never okay, no matter how you try to justify it.
One more thing. PLEASE look at where pups are being raised fro
A breeder… check their reputation from more than 2-3 people do your research!
