It was fantastic to return to Mountain Valley Horse Rescue and see the incredible progress made by the horses we’ve been working with. It’s truly rewarding to witness their transformation and growth. Additionally, we got to work with several new horses, each on their own beautiful journey!

Our upcoming trip to P2 in Elizabeth, CO is officially **FULL**—thank you to everyone who signed up! 🙏🐴 We're excited to get started and can’t wait to see the progress with all the horses we’ll be working with.

But don’t worry if you missed this one! We’ll be back in **Elizabeth, CO** on December 18th, and we’re already taking reservations for that trip. If you’re interested, be sure to check in on availability and reserve your spot soon, as these trips tend to fill up quickly!

🌟 **Trip Summary: Our Visit to P2!** 🌟

We just wrapped up an amazing visit to P2, and we’re thrilled with the progress we saw! 🙌🐴

Many of the horses we worked with showed immediate improvements—it’s always such a rewarding feeling when you can see a positive change after just one session. 🏇💨 We’re excited to see how those initial gains develop over time!

For several horses, it was time for their second session, and we were able to dive in even deeper now that their bodies were ready. It's always incredible to see how much more we can achieve once the groundwork is laid in that first session, and we’re really looking forward to watching the progress unfold in the coming weeks.

We're looking forward to following the progress of all the horses we worked with and can't wait for the next steps in their journey!

Horses, unlike many other mammals, do not have a gallbladder. The gallbladder is an organ that stores and concentrates bile produced by the liver, releasing it into the small intestine to aid in the digestion of fats.

In horses, the liver continually produces bile, and it is released directly into the small intestine as needed. The absence of a gallbladder is an adaptation to the horse's natural grazing behavior. Horses are herbivores with a small stomach relative to their body size, and they consume frequent, small meals throughout the day. Having a constant flow of bile helps in the digestion of the fibrous plant material in their diet. 🌿

This anatomical difference is an evolutionary adaptation that aligns with the horse's grazing habits, allowing for efficient digestion of the plant-based diet without the need for bile storage and concentration.

Another week, another cool horse fact! Read below! 👏🏽😙🦷🐎

Horses have hypsodont teeth, meaning they have high-crowned teeth with reserve crown tissue that continually erupts over time. The type of tooth is referred to as "hypsodont" because of this continuous growth. The constant chewing and grinding of fibrous plant material naturally wear down the teeth, but they don't wear down evenly due to the circular chewing motion.

To address this uneven wear, equine dentistry employs a procedure called "floating." Floating involves filing or rasping the teeth to correct sharp edges, points, or uneven surfaces that can develop over time. This ensures proper occlusion, or the fitting together of upper and lower teeth, preventing dental issues and promoting efficient mastication. Understanding the continuous eruption and uneven wear of hypsodont teeth is crucial in maintaining a horse's oral health through routine dental care like floating. Did you know this fact about your horse? 🙌🏽☺️

Horses have evolved to have a single functional toe, which is their third toe. This adaptation, known as monodactylism, allows them to distribute their weight effectively and run with speed and agility. The hooves, consisting of the distal phalanx (P3) encased in a keratinized structure (what we know as the hoof), provide support and protection. The metacarpal 3 (front limb) or metatarsal 3 (hind limb) supports the horse's body weight.

Caring for the hooves, including regular trimming and maintenance, is crucial because the entire weight of the horse is supported on these relatively small structures. It's essential for overall equine health, as issues with the distal limbs can affect the horse's mobility and well-being. Understanding the anatomy, such as the metacarpal and metatarsal bones, as well as the phalanges (P1, P2, and P3), helps in appreciating the intricate design of a horse's limbs. Meet Rebel! 🐎 Struggling with swelling and movement restrictions in her right thoracic limb, Rebel (and her mom) found solace in our care. 😌 We applied KT tape on the right front limb and after the session, this will help with: 1. Getting our jam on with some positional release! I love these softer techniques. Tapping into the body's natural self-corrective responses and simply aiding the body in its own unravelling. The effects always seem to be profound, and I use these as the basis for my approach whenever possible!
