Did you hear the news? Legal FIP treatment is coming to the U.S.! 🙀

Starting in June 2024, veterinarians will be able to legally order compounded tablets of GS-441524, the drug proven to save the lives of cats diagnosed with FIP (like my dear Coco 🖤) through Stokes pharmacy. This is a major win for veterinarians and cat guardians who have historically had to either say goodbye to the cats in their care, or access the lifesaving drug through nontraditional (black market) means. It’s truly amazing to see history being made before our eyes!

As I said to Dr. Wallach when I heard the news yesterday, I am beside myself with happiness—and also feel like I’ll never have to stop updating my book, haha! I loved her response: “If science is progressing as it should, we should always be making our previous information outdated.” YES!

I wanted to share this cool news with you all so that if your cat becomes diagnosed with FIP, you can ask your veterinarian about the possibility of ordering compounded tablets that can save her life.

P.S. I have had several foster parents tell me at events recently that they’re having kittens diagnosed with FIP one after another after another. So I wanted to add some of my own perspectives on reducing the risk of FIP in foster homes:

1) Avoid overcrowding — be mindful of your capacity for care. Don’t house kittens of many litters all together in one shared space, take breaks to fully disinfect between litters to reduce fomites in environment, etc.

2) Avoid exposure to coronavirus — keep your kittens contained and separated from resident animals. If you have a resident cat who routinely interacts with your kittens, please have them PCR tested for coronavirus (and stop exposing them to your kittens if they are positive.)

3. Follow good husbandry practices to reduce stress — while I’m not aware of a study specifically linking husbandry issues to FIP, we know that the coronavirus can mutate to FIP in immune compromised cats. Some husbandry issues I see often are premature weaning, inappropriate feeding schedules, unsanitary conditions, and failure to treat other diseases promptly.

Update 04/16/24
It is with a heavy heart that I share that Charlie succumbed to her disease. She had Felv and was just a year old when the symptoms came on suddenly a couple weeks ago and there was nothing I could do but hold her and tell her I loved her while we let her go.
I will not lie and tell you she did not suffer at the end. She quit eating and drinking and any food, water or meds I would force feed her ended up back on the floor within minutes. She had organ failure, respiratory distress, pain and was vomiting bile.
I say this to emphasize the fact that there are too many cats and not enough homes. There are too many strays and runaways having babies and no one to care for them. Charlie would never have been born into a life of suffering had her mama been fixed by a responsible caretaker long before she had a single baby.

Please spay and neuter your pets.

Day 161 since my rescue. The humans are amazing, but they are not my people. I am fed and cared for, but I want more. I want to be with people all the time, to sit on laps and snuggle, play with toys and get brushed. Where is my person? Please kitty angels, send my person.

When you get a call in the middle of dinner and you’re low key irritated. This, this video here that I’m posting, this is what makes it worth pushing my plate aside, leaving the dinner table and driving across town. This kitten makes it all worth it. This kitten is safe and warm and she knows it now. This kitten was starving, dehydrated, flea infested and probably about to go into heat if she hasn’t already. This kitten is grateful for her new soft bed, albeit temporary until she gets to her even cushier, forever home. So to all the other rescuers out there, hang in there! While It feels overwhelming because you just can’t save them all, remember that it matters to the ones you can. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

Volume up y’all!!! This is my old dog Layla. We always joke when she dream-runs and wonder what she might be chasing in her dreams since she can’t run in real life anymore. Here you can clearly see she’s dancing with mama again🥹. I’ve always got some heavy bass music on of some sorts but I didn’t know my girl could still dance so good. I’m not crying, you’re crying! They really are a duo and I would love for them to be able to spend the rest of their lives together. These 2 wouldn’t let me near them when I first trapped them. They were terrified and hadn’t learned that humans can be good. Even a week ago Onyx still had serious trust issues with me and wouldn’t let me pet him or pick him up without me having to grab him and force it on him. Now he rolls around begging for pets and belly rubs. Neither one has a mean bone in their body. As scared as they were initially they have never bitten or scratched me. ❤️URIAH ❤️ UNO ❤️ UNIQUE❤️ My little FIV babies Their feral mama tested FIV positive. They tested a faint positive at about 14 weeks at time of neuter. We are hoping that at 6 months they test negative for FIV and can be adopted out as “normal” kittens. For now they will stay here and be loved. If FIV positive for life, we will attempt placement with adopters who know about FIV and can take in FIV babies to give them a loving, happy life. FIV cats can live a long, happy, normal life. Although they can live with non-FIV cats, it is safer to be an only cat or to be in an FIV only household. FIV is not a death sentence. FIV kittens do not need to be euthanized. FIV cats are not always sickly their whole lives. I can’t save them all but I can save these babies.
