Ding is not a fan of people he doesn't know and historically bit first and thought later. Border Collies are not always social dogs. They aren't bred for sociability but here are some of the things I did to keep him and everyone else safe.
1. I worked on his obedience so he was under control.
2. I needed a rock solid recall so he could safely be allowed freedom.
3. I taught an emergency stop so I could down him anywhere.
4. I taught him a protocol to meet people where he could investigate them for 3 seconds without them interacting with him and then he could come away
5. I worked on his impulse control and automatic check ins with me.
6. I taught him start button behaviours so he could opt out when uncomfortable.
7. I advocate for him and don't let people approach him or touch him unless he is allowed to use his meet and great protocol.
8. I try not to put him in unfair situations.
Because of all of this we have built trust in each other. He is comfortable in the vicinity of people because he trusts they won't be allowed to interact with him if he doesn't want it.
Asking people to ignore your dog can be a really powerful tool in building your dogs confidence
