Today is the beginning of Diwali! We worked with Nidhi Naroth to create this image that evokes the holiday. Here's what she had to say about the holiday, "Diwali (or as we call it in some southern parts of India, Deepavali) is a time of celebration of the light and all that symbolizes it. Every religion and state that takes part in Deepavali do it for a variety of different reasons, but ultimately, it’s a time for friends, family, delightful food, and celebration — all within the backdrop of hundreds of lit diya lamps and fire crackers."

Update: a rescue in NKY who works with dogs like this regularly has offered to take Miss Fwana. We will be finishing up her vetting and then she will transfer to them. Thank you!!!!

Ya'll we need some help here. Miss Fwana came in as a stray found roaming a rural area of KY. She is emaciated and has been severely traumatized emotionally to the point that she is currently reactive to anything that enters "her" space or gets near anything she considers "hers". She will lunge and scream like a banshee at other animals and people that she considers a threat. While it is our goal to help any animal that we take through whatever problems they are facing, medical issues are so much easier to deal with than behavioral ones.

Fwana was assessed by a trainer last night and they said:
" she has had major trauma. She will need a LOT of work. Sooner we can find a consistent home with someone willing to put in the effort, would be good. She needs socialization to everything, people, dogs, pumpkins, anything and everything. Major positive reinforcement for anything she does well."

Unfortunately her current foster home does not have the correct environment or the time for an endeavor like this. Without someone stepping up to give this girl a place to decompress and reprogram there isnt much hope for helping her. Woodstock can provide the medication and the trainer, but we need someone to step up to provide a consistent home environment and the time that she will need. Our trainer is located in Nicholasville Ky and I foresee her needing to visited at least weekly or even bi weekly for quite some time.

ADOPTED!

Balli is a 1.5 year old Akbash. Yep, an Akbash! They are a Turkish guardian dog bred to protect the flock (sheep, goats, cows, etc). Balli came to us via a breeder who surrendered him to the shelter when he didn’t meet the breed standard. He was used as a stud dog and was also reportedly kept chained to a tree. He reportedly chased chickens and may have hurt a lamb, but conflicting reports say this very likely could have been coyotes, so we don’t know the full story. We’re told other dogs have been surrendered to the shelter in the past, which is why we beg people not to support backyard breeders!

Balli is a real live gentle giant at 120 lbs. He’s actually QUITE THIN for his size, as our vet says he needs to gain another 10-20lbs! We suggest you look up the breed and research to get familiar before inquiring about this great BIG AND STRONG dog!

When Balli is taken for walks, he stays so close to your side that his head presses against you. He is not interested in playing fetch or running and playing in the yard, but prefers to sit by your side with his head on your lap for affection. Due to his strength and size, we are looking for a home for Balli where he will either be the only dog or would be with other large breed dogs. He is tolerant of other dogs, but doesn’t seem to want to engage them in play.

This guy is a truly regal soul and will make a wonderful family member for an adult family (no little kids due to his size and the fact that he has been an outdoor dog only so far, no history with kids). He seems to be house trained but should not be crated.

Water is an 8 month old, 50ish lb (and growing!) Golden/Great Pyrenees mix looking for her forever family!

Water is a complete sweetheart but is a bit skittish, as she missed out on the early socialization that all puppies need. She is looking for a family willing and able to work with her on her socialization and training skills to help her grow into a great well-rounded dog. Right now, we believe she needs to go to a home with another dog to help build her confidence and a home with a fenced yard with direct access to the home from the yard, as she could be considered a bolter due to her nervousness and has not yet learned good leash-walking.
