My mare often has severe reactions to her vaccines. This year we decided to try to give just one vaccine at a time with Banamine. Unfortunately, the site of it became very swollen and firm, obstructing her shoulder and making her lame on her LF. The last time she had a firm swelling from a vaccine it lasted for 8+ months. Within three cold laser treatments the inflammation was significantly decreased and she was serviceably sound. I’m so happy that she is more comfortable and will continue the treatment.

Having your horse balance on slightly unstable surfaces, such as a Theraband or SureFoot Pad, or a gym mat can help to increase their proprioception, motor control, and activate their core muscles. It can also release muscle tension throughout the body. Many horses will relax quite a lot when standing on a mat or pad.

My 10 year old gelding had a clicking sound in his hind end and was off at the trot. We weren’t able to pinpoint where his lameness was. It seemed to be up high. Why is improving your horse’s proprioception so important, especially after an injury or time off?
•
Proprioception plays a huge role in a horse’s (and human’s!) ability to balance itself, have quicker reaction times, and make precise movements. When a horse has good proprioception and is otherwise healthy, it should be agile and know where it’s feet are. After injury or time off, the horse’s brain may need practice to regain appropriate proprioceptive ability.

However! Any horse can benefit from proprioceptive exercises 💪🏼🐴

Having your horse walk or stand over a pole while straddling it is a great exercise, and it’s much harder than it looks! Many horses will not be able to straddle the pole with all four legs right away, so it’s important to go slow and let their body adapt 💛
