Ohio SPCA & Humane Society

Ohio SPCA & Humane Society The Ohio SPCA & Humane Society is a 501(c)3 organization that is funded solely by donations, grants, and bequests.

The HSOAC is now under the management of the Ohio SPCA. After struggling to serve the needs of the animals and the community for the past several years, the former Board of Directors of the Humane Society of Allen County made the decision to turn over the operation and functions of the humane society to the Ohio SPCA. This decision was based on the belief that the Ohio SPCA was the right organizat

ion to take the humane society into the future. Over the course of the next several months the humane society will be restructured during a transition period with many changes taking place. The mission of the humane society will be fulfilled with existing programs being strengthened and expanded and new programs being added. The Ohio SPCA is dedicated to helping animals through the education of adults and children, the elimination of overpopulation, and enforcing zero tolerance of animal cruelty. The Ohio SPCA has already trained four humane officers to respond to reports of animal abuse and neglect and enforce animal cruelty laws under the Ohio Revised Code. The Ohio SPCA will continue to rescue animals across the state, but Allen County animals and residents will receive help through county priority programs. It is our vision that the animal shelter become a family destination for people from everywhere to connect with animals of all kinds. As goals are reached, we believe that Allen County will become a shining star and the best place for animals in the State of Ohio.

As we announced in our last post, volunteers will not be permitted to walk dogs until we have trained staff and a behaviorist to work with them. That decision was precipitated by a serious injury that one of our dogs caused (Rascal). Rascal has not been euthanized, but he will not be available for adoption until our behaviorist can work with him to reduce the risk of repeating the injury.

We deeply appreciate all of our volunteers. Our new policy is intended to protect them as well as protecting all of our animals. Some people are now making false and misleading posts about our policy, that require us to devote time and effort to responding to ridiculous accusations instead of caring for our animals. Please take a minute to find out the truth before commenting on things that you choose not to understand.

As of November 18, the Board of Directors suspended the volunteer dog walking program. We value the contribution of volunteers and understand that they are an integral part of running a Humane Society. However, after several recent incidents involving injuries to dogs and volunteers, this is the best decision for the health and safety of the dogs and our staff and volunteers.

We have engaged the services of a professional dog trainer/behaviorist, who will institute a training program, starting with our staff, including the two dog walkers we have hired. Once the new protocols are in place, we will revisit whether we will add volunteers and train them to walk dogs. In the meantime, there are other opportunities for volunteers at the shelter.

Currently the dogs are being walked three times during weekdays and twice on the weekends. The afternoon walks include training sessions. Once we hire a third dog walker, they will be walked three times on the weekends.

Our main priority is the health and safety of the shelter's animals.

Those eyes can see all!
Fruit Basket certainly rocked our world when she came to us back in April, with her litter of just born babies. She was very protective of them! Now that they are grown and she’s on her own, she has cooled off. She is looking for a family that will give her time to adjust to a new space. Also, FB hates men, there’s no cutting corners there. She’s looking for a ladies only home and would do best with no kids under 5. Slow introductions with other cats are needed.

We are located at 3606 Elida Road, Lima. All available cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped.
Stop by during our operational hours Wednesday-Friday 2:00pm-7:00pm or Saturday noon-4:00pm to meet all of our adoptable cats! Applications can be downloaded on our website, ohiospca.org and sent to: [email protected]

Our handsome friend Blaze is ready to find a furever home!
Blaze is a ~2 year old German Shepherd/Husky mix. He is shy towards new people at first, but once he trusts you he will be your shadow. He is the most loyal guy you could ask for! Blaze would do best with no kids under 5 in the home as he can be easily spooked. A meet and greet with any other dogs in the home is required, but he did live with many others in the past and did fine! Blaze needs a home with no cats. This handsome fella is ready to meet you!

Little Miss Boop has been on the adoption floor for over a month now, but she has not received any interest in that time. This cutie came to us after being attacked by a dog, which caused some trauma to her eyes. Boop still has some vision and will let you know by playfully pouncing on your hands! She does well with other animals and children, she just needs someone to see past what makes her “different” and see the sweetheart that she is. Boop is 6 months old and would love to meet you ❤️

Amelia has spent over a year with not a single application for her. She needs a very special someone to give her the life she deserves!
Amelia came to the shelter as part of a cruelty case. She is a small mixed breed dog around ~35 pounds. She has a quiet and gentle soul, and the shelter is overwhelming to her. Amelia is looking to be the only animal in the home, and prefers a quiet and calm home environment. She is easily frightened and because of this, requires a physical fenced in yard. Amelia may be considered high maintenance in her needs, but she is going to be the best cuddle partner for the right person. She is around 4 years old.

Billie is growing up right before our eyes.. She’s been with us since she was very small, hoping someone will take interest in her soon! This 8 month old kitten is a great combo of cuddly and playful. She does great with other animals and people of all ages. She would make a great addition to any home looking for a little house panther 🖤

Moo Moo was ready for his closeup, and these shots describe him better than words could ever say 🥰
This hunk of pudgy love is 5 years old and is as smart as can be. He knows sit, shake (both paws) and speak! Moo Moo came to us by no fault of his own, his previous family was facing homelessness. He does well with children and other animals, with a sweet and calm disposition that makes him the best boy. Moo Moo loves going for walks and rolling over for belly rubs. He is sure to win over your heart, and make a great addition to the family! 🐮

Arcee's past is a story of fear and hard times. She came to us as an absolutely terrified stray with her just born babies, a very young mom that likely had never been shown kindness by humans before. Once she understood she was safe with us, her gentle and sweet personality shined through.
If you sit and talk to her, Arcee will start to make biscuits on her blanket and come up to you for pets. Arcee does great with other cats and we imagine would do fine with children. She has truly blossomed into a curious, social gal! She will be a great companion to someone, maybe someone lonely like herself. Arcee is around 1 year old and is ready for a fresh start in life.

We are located at 3606 Elida Road, Lima. All available cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped.

This is Domino, a beautiful goat that is a little rough around the edges. He appeared at a construction site in Columbus. Demolition and not construction would be more of his skillset. The workers there named him Domino because they fed him pizza. One of them took him home and called us.
He is the sweetest and has a lot to say. When he arrived, he was intact, and now that he has been neutered, he needs to remain in quarantine for up to eight weeks to ensure no little Dominos arrive in the future. Although they would be the cutest. He has found his forever home with us.
