Training session with Lexi working on loose leash walking, sit stays, and down stays! We loved having her here with us for boarding and training. Remember guys using positive and negative markers can make or break your dogs training, don’t forget to be using them with your pups. 🐶

PSA‼️ Are you aware of HAB’s? These can be extremely dangerous for yourself and your pets. Here’s what you need to know:

☢️What is a HAB?☢️
Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB), also known as toxic blue-green algae, refer to certain strains of cyanobacteria that produce toxins. HABs often are a distinct blue-green color but may also appear to be green, brown or red. The toxins associated with HABs have been found in a number of Nebraska lakes sampled.
HABs can dominate the algal populations of a lake under the right combinations of water temperature, low water depths, and nutrients (such as high nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations from wastewater discharges and runoff from agricultural land and communities).

🦠Why are HAB’s dangerous?🦠
Pets and farm animals have died from drinking water containing an HAB (or licking their wet hair/fur/paws after they have been in the water). Toxins produced by HABs have been known to persist in water for up to 14 days after the bloom has disappeared.
The risks to humans come from external exposure (prolonged contact with skin) and from swallowing the water. Symptoms from external exposure are skin rashes, lesions and blisters. More severe cases can include mouth ulcers, ulcers inside the nose, eye and/or ear irritation and blistering of the lips. Symptoms from ingestion can include headaches, nausea, muscular pains, central abdominal pain, diarrhea and vomiting. Severe cases could include seizures, liver failure, respiratory arrest - even death, although this is rare. The severity of the illness is related to the amount of water ingested, and the concentrations of the toxins.

👀What do I look for?👀
• Water that has a neon green, pea green, blue-green or reddish-brown color.
• Water that has a bad odor.
• Foam, scum or a thick paint-like appearance on the water surface.
• Green or blue-green streaks on the surface.
• Areas with algae that look like grass clippings floating in the water.
• When algal blooms are present at a lake, avoid protected bays and shorelines on the windward side of the lake. These are areas that generally have higher concentrations of algae, and potentially toxins.

INFO INFO INFO
Could you imagine how discomforting it would be to walk barefoot on hot pavement all summer long?! Sounds ruff 🐶 We recommend feeling the pavement flat handed for 30 seconds before quickly walking a dog over it. If it’s warm for you it’s surely hot for them. If you find yourself in a position of walking a distance over asphalt to carry your pet or train them to wear protective gear to cover the feet! CANT WAIT FOR SUMMER 2024 😎👙🌴

It’s getting to be that time of year where all the creepy crawlers are coming out! The easiest way to prevent fleas and ticks is to start your pup (and kitties) on a preventative! These are given at your vet and definitely recommend! Remember flea collars, flea and tick baths, and other remedies do not help prevent transmission of infection or disease! Ask your vet about their favorite way to fight fleas and ticks!

If you are an active pet owner who enjoys hiking, swimming, or even just like to be active with your pet it is very important to properly introduce water. Many think “it’s a water breed” and it will enjoy water. This is just not true. Failing to properly introduce water can lead to fear from your pet making bath time, hiking, or a pool in the backyard dangerous and scary. Get with us today to talk about the benefits of swimming your dog, and how we can make sure your pet is safe!

With heavy hearts from everyone here at Paws we have to announce that Mr Diesel has sadly crossed the rainbow bridge. Diesel was the goodest good boy, and such a goofy guy. He had tons of friends here at daycare but he especially loved Davey a silver lab. We will all miss you Diesel!

Come train with me! Derby is here working on his obedience. Today we worked on climb stay and down stay. Derby is a high energy boy who is very easily distracted and also extremely intelligent. The key to keeping him engaged in training is to have fun and use that energy as a motivator!

This sweet girl is up for adoption through Doberman Rescue of Nebraska. Elayna is roughly 5-7 years old, needs to be properly introduced to other dogs as she is still alittle nervous. She has enough personality to fill the whole house. She is such a lover! She’s laid back and loves to cuddle. She LOVES to play outside and go for walks. Elayna knows her basic commands sit stay, down stay, and walks well on a leash. If you are interested in fostering or adopting Elayna please each out to Doberman Rescue of Nebraska on their website.
