Tonight I attended a crab feed where there were many auctions and drawings. I was saddened to see 2 16 week akc golden retrievers being auctioned off. The crazy thing is they ended up being auction for twice what my high quality (parents are health tested), socialized puppies routinely sell for. Why was I saddened ? Because part of being a responsible breeder is knowing that the puppies you breed are going to the best home possible and that they are not an impulse buy but a thought out decision. I screen every prospective buyer and ensure that my pups have the best chance out there for love, care and will be a part of a family and not tossed in the back yard when they become a”teenager”. If you auction your puppies and have no control on where they go, what does that say about your breeding program ? Sorry to dump this but it really bothered my heart ! And the fact is those “winners” could have purchased a dog they could know a lot more about for half of the auction price …
