Our Coast Guard family checked in with some awesome Waylon updates we had to share!

This gentle giant has quickly become an integral part of their family, providing emotional support to both of his young two-legged siblings, to whom he has become quite attached. He loves their morning walks and with the help of local trainer, Ben Miller, is doing amazing with his loose leash walking.

From BBQs to soccer games, trick or treating to his first visit to Santa, Waylon’s first year in his furever home has been incredible. He is a now beloved member of the family AND community. He’s also now going to start working on training toward becoming a certified therapy dog specifically for children’s reading programs. His mom is hopeful that he will one day be able to join her in the school library helping improve reading and comprehension skills with students and providing them emotional support and comfort as well.

We are pretty sure he will love every minute of it!

On this Giving Tuesday, please consider donating to us so we can help make more meaningful matches like Waylon’s!

Hope everyone had a very Happy Thanksgiving!! We have so much to be thankful for - our adopters, fosters, volunteers, donors, supporters, partner rescues.

We are also very thankful for the many local nonprofits we have had the honor to partner with to help our communities in various ways, such as Show Your Soft Side, Nexus Foundation, The Tender Bridge (Banners Hockey).

We are especially thankful for all of our four legged “Taste Testers” that bring us comfort and joy on this and every other day!!

We have a special Foster Friday pup for you, courtesy of LovePaws (in VA).

Meet Izzy, a 3 yo Canaan Dog w/ a heart of gold. This resilient girl spent her 1st yr of life as a Middle East street dog before she was rescued by her current family, who were stationed there w/ the Marines. They fell in love w/ Izzy & couldn’t bear to leave her behind when they moved back to the states last year. Life for a street dog there is unimaginable at best, so Izzy was welcomed into their family & home.

Her Dad received new orders so the family now has to relocate back overseas in early 2025. They do not believe Izzy will do well going back overseas & fear all the progress she has made will be lost. They are desperately hoping to find her the best new home before they have to relocate again.

Adjusting to home life was challenging for Izzy at first, as she lacked confidence and found it difficult to trust new people. While she loves other dogs (lives w/ a cat as well), she is shy w/ new people and takes time to warm up. With patience & love, she blossoms into the loyal, affectionate, sweet Izzy her family has come to know and love. Once you’re part of Izzy’s circle, she’ll happily flop over for some love and attention. She’s been working w/ a trainer to help build confidence and taking meds that help as well.

She is healthy, spayed, house and crate trained. She does best with a routine and would thrive in a quiet or rural environment with experienced and patient owners. She enjoys spending time outdoors, running around with her furry friends, and lounging in the sun with a toy in tow.

Izzy’s ideal day includes plenty of playtime followed by cuddles by the fireplace with her family. She is ready to find a loving home where she can continue to grow and thrive. If you have the time, patience, and love to give to Izzy, she will reward you with endless affection and loyalty. Could you be the one to give Izzy the forever home she deserves?

It’s Purple Friday, which also means it’s FOSTER FRIDAY!!

Our featured Foster Friday pup is playful girl, Qiana!

This sweet girl is the ultimate cozy companion, offering morning cuddles, the perfect way to start your day. At 4 years old and 60 lbs, she blends playful puppy energy with affectionate charm, quickly warming up to shower you with love and kisses.

Qiana initially came to after being found abandoned outside with no shelter, food or water and with a large, painful, open wound in her back. She was shy and nervous at first, more comfortable spending time with friendly dog pals than people. Her back wound has since healed as well as her heart, as she now opens up to people, and enjoys the attention.

Her adorable expressions will melt your heart, and she loves to show off her tricks, like sitting on command or giving a playful wiggle. In the yard, her silly side shines as she sprints after a squeaky plush ball or enjoys a game of fetch, all while being a model citizen on a leash with great manners when retrieving her toys.

Qiana has worked hard on her crate training and is fully potty trained. She loves interactive playtime, solo toy chomping, and is always ready for a fun romp or cozy snuggle. Her social, bouncy nature makes her a favorite among other dogs, ensuring she’ll bring joy and energy to any household.

During her time in foster, Qiana was a cuddly, playful sweetheart who thrived in a lively environment. While she loves the company of a doggy friend who can match her bubbly spirit, she’s also a fantastic solo companion and interacts well with small breed dogs.

She’s enjoyed exciting dog day out adventures, where she’s been described as sweet, lovable, and cute! Although she initially pulled on the leash, she quickly settled in and enjoyed her pup cup, showering everyone with kisses and snuggles, proving she’s a truly sweet girl.

Qiana is a BARCS VIP, which means her adoption fee is waived! To learn more about her personality and needs, check out her VIP profile by clicking here: https://www.barcs.org/vip-urgent-list

For Foster Friday, we have an extra special story to share as this foster pup just found her furever home and is now part of our RSF family!

Candace was brought into BARCS Animal Shelter as a stray. She was 5 yrs old, underweight (even at 75 lbs!) and terrified. This gentle giant was shut down in her kennel & petrified of strangers. Her caretakers soon found two things she loved though - treats and DOGS.

While uncertain & insecure w/ people, she lit up with other dogs. Her favorite time of the day was getting to join other dogs in the play yard. Incredibly dog social, Candace soon became a “dog helper” assisting staff in assessing & socializing other dogs.

She was soon able to go to a foster home that included another big, social dog. The time she spent w/ them helped her tremendously, allowing her time to decompress, learn to trust & most importantly - relax. Just in time to meet Jon!

Jon is a Veteran who served as an Explosives Ordinance Disposal (EOD) Specialist While deployed in Iraq, an intentional trap was set targeting his platoon and an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated, taking the lives of nearly the entire infantry platoon (around 50 soldiers). Jon was the sole survivor of the attack but was severely wounded and fell into a coma.

He woke from the coma, but had a long road to recovery, physically and mentally. He suffered from TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) & developed PTSD. For part of his recovery, VA sent him to equine (horse) therapy, which was extremely healing for him. He always had a special relationship with animals (even had a pet raccoon as a child) and he realized he needed a dog.

He had adopted his most recent dog, Bruno, from BARCS and they have a great bond. Bruno is also very dog social and Jon noticed he was lonely being an only dog. He wanted to adopt another dog that would help him with his PTSD but also help Bruno as well.

They are now a happy family of 3. With the help of local trainer, Jack Schroeter, Jon is working on helping Candice Rae (new name!) settle in her new home and build confidence. Jon loves working with her and helping her overcome any challenges she faces.

It’s Foster Friday!!

Meet Nerf!

Nerf is a 70 lb velvet hippo who offers the best of two types of dogs - equal parts energizer bunny and snuggle buddy.

When you want an adventure buddy, 3 yr old Nerf is always ready to ride with you. 🚙 She’s a dream to walk on a front clip harness, champ in the car, and hardy over any terrain: stairs, trails, sidewalks, elevators, parks, gravel… (she seems to love the shower, so we bet she’s a fan of swimming too).

She loves her play time, She’s a glutton for a round of tug with a rope toy and any toys she can shred. And she’s quite nimble - navigating her foster’s apartment furniture easily mid zoomie💨. Because of her size and joy, she’d do best with older kids and no other small animals.

When she’s spent, she’ll activate couch potato mode. Nerf’s the world’s greatest snuggle buddy for sure. She’s down for a group nap with you on the couch or a snooze on her bed while you work. Just keep yourself on mute, she snores very loud 😴.

While she’d rather follow you around all day - making her an excellent sous chef in the kitchen, mind you - she settles nicely in her crate or a baby gated area while you’re away.

Nerf is also so so smart. She thrives with a routine where she can pick up patterns in what you want from her. She’s potty and crate trained already. Even without formal training she understands boundaries of what surfaces she was allowed on and when - no human bed, and no couch with a bone chew or when the humans are eating.

She’s quite food motivated, her fav treats are blueberries, watermelon, greek yogurt, cheese, peanut butter, and ALL the chicken.

Nerf Likes 😈
✅ scritches
✅ chicken in all forms
✅ walks with good sniffs
✅ splooting on a cool floor after said walks

Nerf Dislikes 👿
🚫 when you stop giving scritches
🚫 that one neighbor you don’t like (she’s loyal that way)
🚫 concept of personal space
🚫 seriously, why’d you stop giving scritches

Nerf is such a special girl and has so much love to give! Please help us find her perfect furever home! For more info email [email protected]

It’s Foster Friday!!

🌟 Meet Mr. Waggles, aka Wags, a 6 mo old male mixed breed pup 🌟, found as a stray with a broken leg 😔. A Good Samaritan found him wandering behind a post office, clearly injured. She learned from others in the area that he’d been hit by a car 2 days prior and had been wandering around since.

This poor guy managed to survive 2 days all alone, hungry and in pain, and once rescued, he was still sweet & friendly as can be. He has since had surgery to repair his leg and is now on the mend. (Videos are before surgery)

Details about sweet Wags:

Weight: currently 26lbs, likely grow to 50-60lb range once full grown

Special 🏥 needs: still healing from leg fracture repair, so he’s on light activity. Once he is healed and gained some weight, he will need to be neutered. In the meantime, he’s taking it easy and enjoying his time in his foster home.

Dog 🐶 friendly: yes 👍

Cat 🐈 friendly: unknown

Kid friendly: any age with supervision, puppies tend to nip/jump, so please be mindful of that when around kids!

Energy level (1 being a couch 🥔, 10 the energizer 🐰): Wags is a happy puppy about 7/8 out of 10 energy - always ready to play, then will cuddle once he’s had enough exercise. He can’t wait to be off activity restriction so he can finally do some full speed zoomies and wrestle with a canine friend.

Potty/crate trained 🚽: working on that in foster.

Leash trained: he walks well on a leash!

Travels well 🚗 : yes, he is great co-pilot material!

Favorite toys/activities 🎾 🧸 : he’s happy doing pretty much anything! Wags loves to chase balls, chew bones, or snuggle a stuffie 💜.

Ideal family dynamic/living situation: Wags would thrive with another active dog in the home, he really likes to be with humans, so someone who’s home more often than not or can take him with them would be great! Fenced yard not required but preferred, as he’ll need lots of playtime & walks.

Sunday, we had the pleasure of spending the afternoon with the children and staff at the residential facility in Baltimore. At this facility, Nexus provides treatment and support for youth (12-18 yrs old) that have experienced significant childhood trauma. While in the program, the children receive mental health care, counseling, schooling, vocational training and most importantly the opportunity to just be children.

Ronnie and our volunteers had the honor of meeting and spending some quality time with approximately 50 children on campus. We had Southern Blues cater a delicious lunch for them and even brought our RSF/BARCS Alum, Hercules (fka Drakco) to brighten their day.

We learned they needed some new equipment to allow them more options for outdoor exercise. Physical exercise and activity are some of the most important aspects of mental health and healing, so having this equipment would be a huge help for the children. To help them get these much-needed items, Ronnie presented Nexus Foundation for Family Healing with a check for $10,000. We know it will go to good use!

The children had a great time chatting with Ronnie, throwing a ball around and even playing some tug of war. They got a kick out of Herc’s giant dog antics, and he soaked up every second of love and attention (his favorite things!). They ate, they played, they chatted, they pet a giant dog, and they had a great day - and that’s what it’s all about.

The kids presented Ronnie with an incredibly thoughtful “Thank You” poster signed by them all to commemorate his visit. The gratitude and appreciation they showed was so genuine and a true testament to their spirit and resilience. We look forward to many more visits and joint activities with this inspiring group.

We have a special, oversized Featured Foster for Foster Friday.

Meet Lara Croft, a gentle giant of a mastiff mix looking for a soft spot to land furever.

💜 4 yo Lara Croft is a gentle & affectionate 106 lb lady. A big gal, but she’s so easygoing & relaxed that you barely feel her at the end of the leash. She enjoys taking slow walks, stopping frequently to sniff around and get pets. She’s very easy to guide & doesn’t pull or react to cars, people, bikes, dogs, or rabbits.

🛁 While in her temp foster home, she has been potty trained, loves cuddling, being bathed, brushed, and playing with toys occasionally. She was initially slower to warm up to her foster dad but quickly bonded w/ him after spending some time together, often walking beside him and seeking out cuddles/ lap time on the floor.

🥰 Lara is a true “Velcro dog,” always wanting to be close to her humans. She loves to nuzzle your hand for more pets, enjoys long belly rubs, and gives gentle “dog hugs” by placing her head on your shoulder or her paw on your arm. Though initially shy, she warms up with time and patience, rewarding you with her deep affection.

🐶 She loves massages & being brushed, finding comfort in these gentle interactions. Though she’s curious, she’s also cautious & moves at her own pace. She is not yet ready for crates, stairs, or car rides, and may get anxious during new experiences. However, w/ time and gentle encouragement, she’s slowly adjusting to her new environment.

At the shelter, Lara has been overwhelmed when interacting in a group of other dogs, but gave appropriate signals to let them know she was uncomfortable. Given these observations, we believe she’d prefer a gentle, respectful pal in a future home who can give her space when needed.

Lara Croft is available immediately for foster, rescue or better yet adoption to her furever home!

Please contact BARCS for more info on this amazing gal! 🐶❤️🐾 email: [email protected]

Our Featured Foster Friday pup comes courtesy of our friends at BARCS!!

🐾🐶ADOPT MR. MAGOO!! He will be the right doggy for YOU!!!🐶🐾

Mr. Magoo is 6 years young and quite handsome! With his puppy days behind him, he is totally chill and easy to manager, as well as a total love bug. He’s a good listener with good manners on leash during walks and in the house.

And don’t let his sad eyes fool you. He is a happy and friendly dog. He wags his tail - A LOT!! He will be a great addition to your family!!❤️🐶🐾

💤He is crate trained! He loves his crate and is so comfortable in there, he sleeps in it at night without the door closed. During the day, when he wants to rest, he’ll go in all on his own and tuck himself in for a nap.

🚽He is potty trained and has never had an accident in his foster home! When he needs to go potty, he will politely ask to go out with a whimper or a whine, and will promptly do his business once he’s out!

📆He’s very adaptable and was super easy to put on a schedule for eating, sleeping and using the potty. He caught on quick and was happy to go along with his foster family’s schedule as if he’d always been there.

🛁He enjoys bathtime. He even raises his legs when it’s time to wash underneath. This debonair dog is happy being squeaky clean and never a dirty dog!

🐾He loves scratches and rubs - any love you can give! He will paw for more if you stop and he is not ready.😂

👧🏽👵🏽He interacts well with everyone in his foster home, he loves everyone and they love him. (age range: teen – senior).

😬He wants to be part of the family, so may have some separation anxiety when left alone for a while. His foster family has learned he’s happiest when he knows someone else is home. He has a soft, quiet puppy whine when he’s anxious or lonely but is learning to settle once he knows he’s not in this alone. This sweet fella just wants to be in his furever home so he can settle into a routine with the family meant for him.

Happy National Dog Day!! On this special day, we have a special post about our special pup - Dave!! While your feed may be filling up with First Day of School posts, please take a minute to check out Dave’s First Day of Work post!!

America’s first hospital, Pennsylvania Hospital, hosted Dave’s first official therapy visit. Here’s a sneak peek, but you’ll want to check back to hear and see all about the very special first visit that took place.

Dave’s first visit consisted of navigating hallways, automatic doors, carts, alarms, a distressed/vocal patient and the list goes on. He made a stop at security so they could finalize badges (he’s got his very own badge!!) and he “took a meeting” with the hospital’s CEO, Alicia Gresham. Finally, he got to meet lots of people and make lots and lots of new friends.

Dave expertly represented The Ronnie Stanley Foundation by being calm, quiet, gentle, ZERO jumping, expert leash manners and welcoming to all. This wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for the early support from Lakeside Elementary and Middle School, Renee’s Rescue and everyone who has supported this little dude.

From Puppy Bowl to Official Therapy Dog, Dave has an incredible year but we have a feeling the best is yet to come!!

Round of applause for Dave!
