January is National Blood Donor Month! 🩸

Every 2 seconds, someone in the US needs blood or platelets. ⏰ Since July 1st, the Red Cross national blood supply has fallen by more than 25%. Blood donors of all types, especially those with type O blood, are urgently needed. Did you also know that cats and dogs can donate blood too? 🐈 🐢

Join us at AVECCC Peoria on Wednesday, March 19th for a Blood Drive with the Red Cross and to learn more about our Canine and Feline Blood Donor Program! For additional information or to register to donate today, please visit redcross.org!

Ma*****na contains psychoactive substance that gives humans a "high" called tetrahydrocannabinol or THC that is toxic to pets. Dogs and cats are MUCH more sensitive to THC than humans.

Pets can be poisoned by ma*****na in different ways: they can eat commercial or homemade edibles, in the form of baked goods or candies; or directly ingest it from ma*****na-related products such as oils or inhalers; or they can inhale it through second-hand smoke.

Signs can occur anywhere from 5 minutes to days after a pet is exposed. Signs may include:
⚠ Lethargy
⚠ Overreaction to sounds
⚠ Dilated pupils or glassed-over eyes
⚠ Dazed expression
⚠ Difficulty walking
⚠ Vomiting
Other signs can include:
⚠ Low or high heart rate
⚠ Whining or crying
⚠ Agitation
⚠ Increased or decreased body temperature
⚠ Incontinence/dribbling urine
⚠ Tremors
⚠ Seizures
⚠ Coma

If you suspect your pet may have ingested ma*****na, contact AVECCC Buckeye at (602) 805-1500 right away. You can also connect with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

Xylitol is a common sugar substitute that causes low blood sugar and liver injury and requires immediate medical attention if ingested by pets. It can be listed under other names, including "birch sugar," "birch extract," and "wood sugar." This ingredient is found in a number of foods and household items including sugar-free chewing gum, ice cream, candy and mints, nut butters, gummy vitamins and supplements, and toothpaste.

Like humans, dogs with arthritis may experience more severe symptoms as cold weather intensifies. Joint pain and stiffness can worsen, making it more painful during winter and more common to slip or fall. Here are a few things you can do to help sooth their pain and prevent an accident:

❄ Maintain a healthy weight - extra pounds add stress to joints and bones, increasing their likelihood for developing osteoarthritis.
❄ Use dog coats or sweaters to help keep their joints warm.
❄ Walk daily to ensure joints stay lubricated – short, easy strolls are best.
❄ Get them a cozy bed (or several!) designed for pets with arthritis.
❄ Use dog ramps, stairs, and a helpful lift when rising and laying down.

If you’re still concerned and want to explore more treatment options, contact your veterinarian to schedule a consultation.

National Pet Travel Safety Day serves as a reminder to keep your pet safe every time you travel with them. Whether it's a family vacation, a car ride to the park, or even to the vet, you want to make each and every trip a safe one! πŸš—βœˆ

- Keep your pet secure in the car. An unsecured pet can be a distraction for the driver which puts them, any passengers, and the pet in danger. Also, never let your pet ride in the bed of a pickup truck. This is illegal in some states and, regardless of the law, puts your pet at a high risk of injury. The best way to keep your pet secure in the car is by using a harness or putting them in a pet crate and keeping them buckled in.

- In addition to keeping them secure, avoid letting your pet ride in the passenger seat or in your lap. If the airbag deploys in an accident, it could severely injure your pet (or worse). Secured in the back seat is the safest place in the car for your pet.

- Keep them comfortable while traveling with a spacious crate. As a rule of thumb, your pet should be able to stand up, sit down, and turn around inside the crate without touching the sides. You could also place a comfort item in the crate for them to travel with to help relieve some stress.

- Prepare a travel kit ahead of time with everything your pet might need while traveling and when you reach your destination. For example, your kit might include the following: food, water, bowls, medications, a leash, waste bags, a scooper, a litter box, and extra litter.

Start the new year off right by pet-proofing your celebration! πŸΎπŸŽ‡ With all the excitement and commotion, NYE celebrations can result in lost pets and accidents.

Here are some tips to keep your pets safe:
πŸŽ‰ Secure pets in a comfy place indoors
πŸŽ‰ Make sure all pets have ID tags
πŸŽ‰ Save emergency vet information! Our phone # is (602) 805-1500
πŸŽ‰ Keep alcohol, treats, and decorations out of reach
πŸŽ‰ Guard entry and exit points – noisemakers, streamers, popping balloons, and fireworks could cause pets to make a sudden escape
πŸŽ‰ If you are leaving your pet for the night, do a quick double-check around the house for all of the above and do what you can to make your pet feel comfortable and safe while they ring in the new year!

As you know, roads can start getting icy this time of year. A common de-icing product known as rock salt is a mixture of sodium chloride that helps reduce ice build-up on roads.

What you may not know is that rock salt can be extremely dangerous to pets - especially when ingested or licked from paws and fur. Symptoms of salt poisoning include drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite.

If you suspect your pet may have ingested rock salt, contact AVECCC Buckeye at (602) 805-1500 right away. You can also connect with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

Today is National Visit the Zoo Day!

🌿🩺 Seeing these majestic creatures up close reminds us how essential veterinary care isβ€”not just for our pets at home, but also for wildlife conservation.

From monitoring the health of a towering giraffe πŸ¦’ to ensuring the playful seals are thriving, veterinary medicine plays a huge role in protecting these animals and their ecosystems. It’s inspiring to see how dedicated teams work to ensure these animals are safe, happy, and healthy.

Whether you're a future vet, an animal lover, or just curious, the zoo is a great place to learn about how we can all help care for our planet’s incredible biodiversity. πŸŒπŸ’š

This is a reminder that both dogs and cats are known to ingest antifreeze (an unfortunately sweet tasting substance). This often occurs when antifreeze isn't stored properly or isn't placed out of paw's reach. Antifreeze can cause serious nervous system damage, kidney failure, and death. All it takes is less than a tablespoon!

If your pet has ingested antifreeze, there is an antidote! However, it is EXTREMELY important to get treatment for your pet as soon as possible. Contact AVECCC Buckeye at (602) 805-1500 right away. You can also call the ASPCA Poison Control Center at (888)426-4435.
