Thiago and Trin have really taken to stalking each other. I was working on getting her to 💩. I saw Thiago take the stance and begin the game. I asked him to stay (do not advance), to down (folding down, 1 fluid movement from stand to down), to sleep (head down), and to stay in that position. I asked for the sleep to make him look less "fun" so Trin could work on that 💩!
I engaged Trin in the opposite direction and went about our business.😊

Adding a puppy changes the dynamics of every relationship in your home, both human and animal.
Thiago and Tater have responded differently to Trin, as if they know she's going to be here permanently. I'm letting everyone go at their own pace, this is important! Remember, you want long-term success in these relationships, and sometimes that takes longer than we'd like. Be patient.

Here are some things I hear:
🔺️Breed X is just unhealthy. You accept it if that is the breed you want.
🔺️Health testing doesn't matter.
🔺️I just want a pet, I don't need that fancy stuff like health testing.
🔺️Health testing is no guarantee of anything, so why bother?
Here is some food for thought:
👉If the standard we demand as buyers is that health testing is important, more breeders will start complying. With that comes more information about their genetics, and it allows everyone to make better decisions.
👉Health testing does matter. It is a way to gain more information, so better decisions can be made. It is a way to work towards eradicating genetic diseases in all dogs.
👉Veterinary care is expensive, and everyone deserves a healthy pet. Health testing gets us closer to that goal for everyone.
👉Health testing results give us valuable information. Genetics are extremely complex, but blindly breeding when health testing is available can be seriously detrimental.
I am purchasing a French Bulldog puppy. The breed is known for serious spinal issues. The breeder has worked to build a breeding program that produces healthy dogs. She does preliminary spinal x-rays at 8 weeks to look for abnormalities and gain information. My puppy will be retested for all required tests for French Bulldogs at the appropriate age. This is how we gain knowledge about the breeds we love and learn how to produce healthier dogs for people to enjoy.🐾

PET INSURANCE! I have spent the last week shopping for pet insurance for my new puppy. You may wonder why I am considering pet insurance when I have spent so much time finding an ethical breeder. It is a fair question, and the answer is simple: dogs are living, breathing organisms and things happen. 1 night in an emergency clinic can easily cost over $1,000 and that could be for something as simple as an allergic reaction.
I made myself a spreadsheet and I looked at 10 different companies. Some didn't even make it to my spreadsheet because they didn't have some of the things, I feel are most important to me. Here are the main points I added to my spreadsheet:

➡️I ran several scenarios using each company's details, to calculate what we would need to pay out of pocket if we had a significant amount of expenses in one year.

➡️ I considered the wellness plan adders offered by some plans and the benefits.
We will continue to use CareCredit zero precent plans as our back up plan for any unexpected costs and any portions of the bills not covered by insurance.

The puppies have had several new experiences, including time outside and their first car ride. They are almost 6 weeks old, and I'll be meeting them all tomorrow for the first time. I'm excited to observe each puppy and hear about the breeder’s observations in person.
Don't forget, I still don't know who is mine. Puppy picks are made by the breeder, based on compatibility. I'm looking for the RIGHT fit!

Yes, the breeder will pick my puppy, and I'm excited about the process! Some things to consider:
💫The breeder knows the mom (dam) best. It is her personal dog, and personality traits from Clover will be passed to her puppies.
💫The breeder researched and developed a relationship with the dad's (sire) owner and has learned all about him too.
💫The breeder is also a dog trainer.
💫The breeder has bred several litters and has experience evaluating puppies.
💫The breeder has spent the most time with the puppies, starting with the moment they were born!
💫Matches are made based on personality/temperament, not color or looks.
◽️We have decided a female puppy is what we prefer. Luckily, this litter has 3 girls! We have given the breeder a ton of information on what we are looking for in a puppy. Personalities have started really coming out, and she's communicating all of the things she's seeing.
◽️I will travel to meet the litter in early October, and it is highly likely I will come home with a good idea of who our puppy will be.
➡️Matching puppies based on personality/temperament is just 1 way ethical breeders work to ensure that their puppies go to the RIGHT home, not just a home.

Yesterday, I shared that we will be adding a puppy to our home in November. I'm going to be sharing the process that led us here, and by here, I mean, purchasing a French Bulldog puppy from an ethical breeder.🐾
Check out my initial inquiry. I sent this message in 2020! I found the breeder and was immediately intrigued by her breeding program but had no plans for a French Bulldog puppy for many years. I started the conversation with her almost 3 years ago. At the time, we had plans to get a different breed and were looking into the future, possibly 5 years ahead. Puppy-K didn't even exist back then!
This was the FIRST STEP in starting a relationship with the breeder that we would build over time. Finding the right breeder and puppy can take time. So, if you are thinking about adding a puppy AND want to go to a breeder, consider starting your research sooner rather than later.❤️

What does this mean? October 27th will be the last day we are open in 2023. I will be bringing home my puppy in early November and spending at least 8 weeks training and socializing her using the same methods I've used for your puppies! I'm excited to share this journey with all of you! And we will be back in early 2024, ready to help raise your puppies again, right alongside my new little girl.❤️

Driveway socialization! 🔸️I made the environment comfortable and fun, but also calming. Sniffing and chewing are good choices. 🔸️We spend a lot of time in the garage, and I want Trin to be comfortable with the sights and sounds that can happen. 🔸️We are also working on her inclination to bark at new/unfamiliar sounds. 🔸️I started very close so I could support her and keep the food coming. 🔸️I gave distance as she was comfortable. 🔸️A surprise neighbor visit made her bark, sniff, bark some more, so we definitely have work to do there. 🔸️The barrier could have also added frustration since she doesn't normally bark at people, so I'll need to keep that in mind going forward. This morning, I attended a fundraiser for @azk9rescue. It was a beautiful yoga session led by @gooddogs.and.greatoutdoors and her message really hit home.💗 The rescue has set up an offrenda sharing the dogs they have lost for the last 11 years. Now, you can add photos of your own pets that have passed, and each year @raebird_and_thebitsiepitbull reconstructs the entire memorial. It is a deeply emotional and beautiful thing to behold. Some dogs who are special to me and those that I love were added to the altar this year.💗

Juniper's owners love her energetic, go personality, and we are having a blast with her. She also needs the ability to settle and relax, so we are helping her by building a settle behavior. -This is her first session. She had a natural interest in the mat, so she sat on it when I put it down. I immediately rewarded her for stepping onto it and placed the rewards in the center. -I started with a clicker and moved to just a verbal reward marker of "Yes" to lower the excitement factor. I also lowered my voice when marking or talking. -This was taken from the instructional video I sent to Juniper's owners to help guide them at home when practicing. -This behavior is not a stay. It is a settle/relax and is built from the ground up, slowly, with lots of reinforcement. The ultimate goal is to put it on cue so it can be used in specific scenarios. -When teaching a behavior like this, choose the time wisely.
