As we settle into spring and summer, I thought I would take the time to review a few health related topics that have been on my mind.

- Tick Prevention : There is nothing more goal crushing than a tick borne disease. Be mindful as these little critters are more active than ever.

- Eye Exams : Find an ophthalmologist in your area. Have them take a look at the eyes of your retriever. Very important part of retrieving.

If I can help, reach out. But most of all, you can help by sharing this post to help others remember. Thank you for sharing.

Kennel Cough Vaccine Reminder

We are a few weeks out from the Grand and well into spring hunt test season. In order for vaccines to work and work to their maximal effectiveness, they must be given at least 2 weeks prior to being exposed.

The DHPP vaccine, The Flu vaccine as well as the Intranasal Bordatella vaccine all help in the fight to fend off nasty upper respiratory infections.

Let’s give em a chance to work.

*Middle Aged Duck Dog Owners* - most important healthcare things to remember

1. Stay on Heartworm Prevention

2. Start Joint Supplements Early

3. Tick Prevention Year Round

4. Keep Nails Trimmed Short

5. Keep Weight in Check

Additional discussion on highlights above ⬆️

1. Heartworm infection can seriously reduce your dog’s ability to perform and reduce lifespan significantly. Use a product with *moxidectin as the active ingredient.

2. Start joint supplements before you see arthritis and limping. I would consider starting these supplements at 2 1/2 to 3 years old if you train and hunt actively. I use Dasuquin Advanced and Glycoflex for my personal duck dogs.

3. Tick disease like Ehrlichia and Anaplasmosis cause life long effects in our sporting dog companions. By giving tick prevention and repelling ticks, we ensure that they won’t acquire these nasty tick borne pathogens that run rampant in our state.

4. This is huge. No broken nails bleeding everywhere. No unnecessary trips to the vet during duck season. Figure out how to use a Dremel tool on your dog’s nails. You will love it. If you need help, I’ll be glad to show you how to file a dog’s nails.

5. We hear this from our doctors all the time. Blah blah blah, but…. It really will keep your duck dog going longer and potentially prevent expensive and debilitating injuries like that torn cruciate ligament (ACL) that took them out mid season or right before the last finished test you needed for the HRCH title…

I’m here to help. Let me know.

Let's talk Upper Respiratory Disease in our Dogs...

What have you seen? Has this been going on all year or in previous years?

The Arkansas State Veterinary Officials inform Veterinarians that a confirmed case of this new upper respiratory condition has not been seen or reported within our state.

My take... Upper respiratory disease has been fierce this past year with a large majority of my clients letting me know that they have been affected.

What should we do?

1. Limit exposure as much as possible to other dogs. Spread out a bit more at training and while at competitions and hunt tests. Trailers and dogs included.

2. See your Veterinarian as soon as upper respiratory signs rear their head. Coughing, coughing up white phlegm, and off feed are a few of the first signs that we tend to see.

3. Let's make sure to not attend events if you have had a coughing dog or dog's in your crew. I would wait a solid 7-14 days after cough dissipates before attending events.

Love to hear your thoughts and what you've experienced in the comments below.
