Yesterday, was the beginning of a huge transformation in our home. This is well-timed, I think. Our lives are ready for a transformation. We’re ready to keep moving forward, living life looking forward, open to change and new possibilities.
The completed project will see new flooring throughout most of the main floor of the house; the living room, dining room, laundry room, small bath and the entry room where the staircase is located. Wall paper removal and some drywall repairs in the dining room come next, and fresh paint in each of the rooms listed. The first coat is already on the living room walls, but I’ll make you wait a little while to see it! 😆
The overall impact of this transformation goes far beyond the visual appeal and overall atmosphere of our home, which will obviously be very wonderful for our family. It also creates a living arrangement that is much more conducive to life with multiple dogs. We know that the value these changes will bring to everyone’s quality of life will be exponential, and we are looking forward to being able to share our home and lives more fully with the dogs, the way that we were able to do back in Ohio. These improvements feel like they were a long time coming, but I am so grateful they are happening now and look forward to all the goodness that comes with them!

This Go Home story is a bit of a rewind: back to spring of 2021!

Tiffany had reached out to me when we were expecting our first litter and was on our interest list for a puppy. In the meantime, I knew we were ready to find a wonderful forever home for our girl, Doris. It was hard to think about letting her go. I wanted to be sure she had the perfect family!

Tiffany had shared with me about her previous experience with Bull Terriers, and talked about how she and her son were ready to have a dog (puppy) in their lives again. Each time I tried to consider who I might offer Doris to, Tiffany came to mind. Eventually, I reached out to her and posed the question. She and her son, Sawyer, came to meet us and visit with Doris.

In mid-March, our family gave Doris all the “goodbye” snuggles before handing her over to her new family. I will tell you… something that could’ve been an incredibly painful experience for our family has been filled with so much joy! From the day Doris went home with her new family to the present, we have gotten to watch her live her BEST life!!

She gained lots of new fur siblings too! When she first went home, there were two kitty friends awaiting her. In fall of 2021, Kevin, Tiffany’s fiancé, joined the family. He brought a couple more kitty siblings too! In 2022, the family adopted a rescue Bull Terrier, who they named Brock. And, they even have a bunny brother named Groot!

I have been so incredibly blessed to get to know and work with such amazing families… both when placing my puppies, and when rehoming. Tiffany, congratulations on your engagement! 💍 Thank you so much for giving Doris such an wonderful home and life! You guys are amazing! ❤️

Ripley (formerly Katsura/blue collar) was the first pup to go home, a week ago Wednesday!
Chris and Hailey live closest in proximity to us, and I knew they were eager to pick up their pup as soon as possible, but bad conditions were projected coming into Christmas weekend.

Puppy Picks took place that Wednesday, following our Temperament Evaluations and families having time to review the recordings of these evaluations and the puppies’ score cards.

When I asked “when would you like to pick your puppy up?,” during their our FaceTime that evening, Chris (only half-jokingly) said, “right now!??” I responded with, “You can, if you want!” This incited a mad dash on both ends, as Chris and Hailey jumped in the car and started to drive, while I scurried around printing paperwork, adding the final items to his go home bag, trimmed his nails and gave him a bath!

I LOVE seeing the joy on people’s faces when they meet their pup for the first time! It is so deeply rewarding! As is knowing that my dear pups are going to be so well loved and cared for in their new homes! Two other pups have gone home since, and I’ve forgotten to snap Go Home photos for each of them! 😭

You can follow along as Ripley grows ! 🤗

You can watch “Kousa”, now known as Joy, as she grows up by following MisterMainer, here on fb, on IG, and on TikTok… if you aren’t following already! 😅🤣

I think it’s going to be great fun to watch her from this vantage point! 😍🤗

Three Weeks Old!
Today is a big day for the pups! We’ve added a puppy pad to the whelping box. This is mostly a “trial and error”, explorative approach, to see what will work at this time.
The pups had the opportunity to explore their first Novelty Items; this is the point where we begin to expand on our curriculum! We began with Prime Bones Mini Knotted Chews. Tupelo was the most engaged with his nose, sniffing his way around the box and searching out the bones. Integra was the most engaged in actively interacting with and tasting the bones.
Today, we are also trimming nails and taking weekly weights!

Here They Are! and I’m late, as always!
Two Week photos!

Everyone’s eyes are open now. They are walking on all fours. Little barks and growls are emerging. The little boys are the biggest, fussy babies. 😂 They are beginning to recognize when the kids are nearby and are enjoying the love and snuggles offered.

We are almost finished with Early Neurological Stimulation and Early Scent Introduction. Just one day to go! Tonight’s Scent was Chamomile. We have begun Daily Handling Exercises. The kids LOVE helping with those and will name off the steps before I can even call them out!

11/05/2022

Once those eyes open, everything changes! These Bull Terriers love their kids right from the start! And, Cassia thinks belly rubs are the best! 💞

11/02/2022

Early Neurological Stimulation & Early Scent Introduction are the first steps in our puppy curriculum, and are performed from Day 3-Day 16.
I chose to start this litter on Day 4 instead, as I felt that they had been a bit overstimulated in the first few days, and I didn’t want to push them too hard, too fast.

Haha! “Just chillin” & “Like Mother, Like Son” ❤️A couple of cute photos from this past week!

A couple of days behind!

The puppies are now 9 days old! The pigment is beginning to come in on those little noses! I also think I may be seeing a little pigment around one (possibly both) of Kousa’s eyes!

Cassia has lost her spot as the largest pup. She was surpassed a couple of days ago by Integra and Katsura, but as of today, Integra takes the lead!

I watched Kousa cross the box today nearly walking on all four legs! I also caught Tupelo sleeping on his back… too cute! He has a fun spot on his belly that he was showing off.

One of my favorite time-saving hacks for cleaning the whelping box… layering!!
When it’s time to change the bedding, I remove mom & pups from the box (this was where crate training begins in a more organic way) and let them snuggle in the crate while I work.
Tipping up the box, I can p*el away the top layer of blankets and underpads, disinfect and wipe down the box and pig rail, and then move everything back into position. 🤗

Labor began late afternoon-early evening on Wednesday, October 19. There was a lot of digging in the blankets and heavy panting, perhaps a few other signs. Not long after the kids went to bed, she seemed to hit a lull. She fell fast asleep and slept through the night.
I did not. I was convinced my 6am alarm would go off at any minute. Apparently, that was hours away. 😅

At 5am, she woke up, got a big drink and asked to go out potty. As soon as we got back inside, labor kicked in hard! For two hours, she dug and panted and got sick- damn those hormones. Isn’t that always one of the worst parts?! By 7:30am, things went quiet again.

She spent a long time after lying peacefully in her box. In and out of sleep. She appeared so calm, full of grace and dignity, trusting the process. Yet, you could still hear in her breath the work that her body was doing.

Eventually, the quiet broke. I knew the next phase was pushing. She started to get sick again and again. The contractions would come, but she was heaving so hard that she couldn’t focus her efforts on bearing down. She was anxious. All of that elegant beauty I had been admiring vanished. After some time, I decided she needed some relief, and put my homeopathic knowledge and education to use. I employed the homeopathic remedy, Cimicfuga. The Cimic calmed her a bit but did not relieve the vomiting like I’d hoped, nor did pushing yet seem effective. So, after a bit, I gave a dose of Caulophyllum. I did a quick check to be sure a puppy was actually coming down, and I could feel right away that it was getting close! I gave another dose of Cimic, and a few minutes later, Puppy 1 emerged at 3:47pm. Puppy 2 arrived at 4:30pm. I gave a final dose of Caul (alternating these remedies to help regulate contractions and make them more effective) before Puppy 3 arrived at 4:52pm. Puppy 4 seemed be giving her an increasingly difficult time, and I could see her energy was depleting. I really felt that she needed to be on her feet to bear down properly for this one, but she didn’t want to get up. Time to switch gears! I gave Gelsemium for the exhaustion. She had been drinking well but not eating, and I realized she was needing nutrients. I served her up a can of Patté and some plain Greek yogurt, which she devoured readily. Soon after, she was on her feet, pushing effectively. Puppy 4 arrived at 6:15pm. Puppy 5 arrived at 6:52pm.

All puppies weighed in beautifully! They all looked healthy and displayed plenty of vigor! Tying cords and getting weights were challenging feats in themselves! 😂 Each one latched on and nursed like a champ! I was in awe! I could not be more thrilled! Man, were we all exhausted!!

Introductions to come later, but for now, we have three gorgeous little females, two handsome red males, and one very proud mama!

This isn’t a ”Climb into bed one night and wake up to puppies in the morning… now, Mom does her thing and life moves on” sort of gig.

It is planning and preparation. It is numerous trips to the vet. It’s days, turned to weeks, of laundry. It’s unpacking supplies, washing them down and disinfecting them… even though you did all of that before you packed them away. It’s ordering supplies, and supplements and special foods. It’s setting everything up so that you’re as prepared as you can be when it’s go-time. It’s days of watching, waiting and monitoring. It’s nights of half-sleeping, listening for any changes in activity, breathing or vocal sounds. It’s hours on a padded floor, keeping the heating pads running when the automatic timer shuts them off. It’s hours of snuggling, soothing, and reassuring her. It’s taking breaks only to p*e, eat and have another half cup of coffee. It’s being in bodily fluids that are not your own and just not caring. It’s mentally preparing for all that might go right… and all that could go wrong; mentally preparing for a slew of hypothetical scenarios. It’s listening to your own intuition and understanding where she is in the process. It’s going from waiting supportively to ”YOU’RE ON DECK”, in an instant. It’s holding a brand new life in your hands, suctioning, stimulating, assessing… and watching as he or she breathes their first breath. …or so many other things “It” could be in that moment. It isn’t always perfect. It isn’t always happy. It isn’t always easy. It’s sleepless nights on a mattress beside the box, making sure that everyone stays alive when mom moves around. And, it is so, so much more!

It is dedication. It is blood, sweat and tears. It is a labor of love. 💞

Our sweet Lucy is on the search for a loving family to give her a forever home! 💞

Reaching these decisions is always a difficult and emotional process. Ultimately, the kindest thing we can do is recognize when the right time is to do what’s best for everyone. We are quite full over here, which means that our capacity to give everyone all the love and attention they deserve gets stretched thin.

In the past, I have always waited patiently for the right person/people to come along. They seem to almost fall into my lap, and I KNOW, instantly, that we’ve found the perfect fit! But, that just has not happened for this girl, so I need to open up the search a bit.

Lucy LOVES children! I also think she would be a great companion for a single person who loves to be active and wants a partner to go everywhere with them. She’s been through Basic Obedience, but she tends to believe she’s the Queen of the castle, and it will take some work earn her respect. I think she would do best in a home with no more than one other dog, and likely better if that dog is a male. She will be turning 4 in late November and is already spayed.

If you are interested and would like to inquire about Lucy, please send an email to [email protected] to begin the application process. I will repost that email in the comments for an easy copy & paste.
