I’m official! I passed the exam to be a certified professional dog trainer! Many trainers and people in the field said, “You don’t need to be certified to be a trainer.” However, I feel strongly about legitimizing the field by using methods that are scientifically based and force free to get results. The process has elevated my training and I’m excited to work with clients through my business. Please follow me .

It’s with a heavy heart that I share that Denver Paw 🐾 School has closed and I have been laid off. I loved my time training there with knowledgeable staff committed to positive reinforcement. This is a huge loss to our community. However, I plan to stay in the field and take my Certified Professional Dog Training- Knowledge Assessed exam tomorrow! Gracie has taught me so much. When it comes to training a dog, patience, bond building and confidence building must come first. She reminds me to slow down all the time and connect if we’re to learn and overcome obstacles together.

This is heartbreaking 💔 and stomach turning. The sad thing is that slip leads, choke collars, shock, and pinch collars are rampant. Pure and simple they are used to inflict pain or discomfort (an aversive) to stop or discourage behavior. The science behind punishment for “teaching” is poor.

For example, if I tell you to close your eyes and envision any animal. Then I say, DO NOT imagine a purple dinosaur. Whatever you do, DO NOT envision a purple dinosaur. What do you envision? -a purple dinosaur-

Therefore, it is not enough to tell the dog “no” or “stop” or just punish behaviors. You must teach the behaviors you want to see and then reward the desired behaviors to increase the frequency of them occurring.

Genetic testing results are back on Ziggy. No surprise on the cattle dog part but a bit surprised by the German Shepherd…that would explain her big ears!! Had to do some fun research on the Lacy Dog. The Lacy Dog is the state dog of TX which is where she transferred from. Another herding breed. Fun to learn something new today!!!

Enrichment: Get on the floor and play with your dog.

Ziggy decided it was the perfect opportunity to give me kisses and initiate a play/wrestle session as I was doing some at home yoga.

It was a gentle reminder that we all have QUALITY TIME as a love language. As people and dogs we show love by spending quality time together. Play is an easy way to grow our bonds with our dogs and enrich both of our lives.

Well this is fun! Gracie learns to use her new slow feeder from Petgeek! Using her targeting skills she presses the button and then food is dispensed. Eventually the button and food dispenser can be spaced in separate rooms and the dog will learn to run back and forth and get some exercise during feeding time
