This is awesome!!! Thank you GBG Exotics!!!!!
๐๐๐ Story Time! ๐๐๐
The last several month we have been traveling the states attending Pet expos. The experience has been absolutely amazing. Watching someone see and touch a glider for the first time is always amazing!
This story however is about a glider named Petey! Petey was a gorgeous platinum baby boy, he was so out going and sweet. In fact, we had him and a little grey friend in a pouch sleeping on top of the cages. Anyone could walk by, open the pouch and let him. No crabs, no running off, just calm!
A couple that I had met a year prior at the same show, saw him and fell in love! They ended up going home with the little guy!
Fast forward a month, I get a phone call. Petey is not so sweet after all. Just your voice sends him into crabbing, he lunges at you, and even will bite. Being experienced owners, they tried to work with him for a while before calling for help. At this point Petey was kept alone, which for one of their other gliders was just fine, so why would it be any different for him at this point? After listening to the behavior occurring, i decided the only reason for the complete attitude change was that his fear of being alone comes out in the form of anger. Basically, a fear biter. They tried introducing him to another young glider, and he wanted to tear her up! He was not going to let anyone in that cage. Luckily I was going to be back in Tennessee that weekend and asked them to bring him to me, and let me keep him overnight.
Saturday morning he arrives. He doesnโt try to bite me at all, because he knows me, but is flighty. I do not hesitate and immediately sn**ch one of my baby boys up and stick them in a new bonding pouch together. Petey immediately took to him. The rest of the day you could find him cuddled in the pouch on top of his new best friend. When i would take the new boy out, and put him back in, Petey would grab him happy he was back. Saturday night Petey stayed with me. We kept working on getting him in and out of the cage, and petting him while out in the cage. Not once did he give us any trouble.
Sunday morning comes and Peteysโ family comes to get him. He is an entirely different glider. We are also able to work with the owners on how to pick them up better without hesitation, because the gliders feed off your fear and nerves. I am happy to say Petey is now back at home with his new friend, and is on his way to becoming that amazing boy they first met!
My reasoning for wanting to tell this story is for two things. First of all, we always stress buying and keeping gliders in pairs. I will never make someone, as i have met numerous people who have healthy happy well socialized babies and only have one! I have always said it can go good or bad, you never know how it will go. Prior to this I personally have seen a sweet glider become aggressive after being alone just a night or two. Giving them a companion almost always fixes it if that is the issue.
Lastly, the kind of service and teaching I am able to provide at a show, is incomparable to what we can do over the phone. While we have had amazing success shipping our babies for years, i absolutely love being able to teach new owners right on the spot how to handle their baby. I could never have fixed this issue with Petey myself if I wasnโt traveling back to the same areas.
I canโt wait to continue to see our babies come back to say hi for years to come. Itโs been such a joy not only with Petey, but with the others that came by this weekend!
