Chickens are tough!

Not necessarily a haunting story, but on this day in 1945, a chicken named Mike lost his head, and was forever known thereafter as "Mike the Headless Chicken."

A Fruita, Colorado farmer, Lloyd Olsen was sent out to get a chicken for dinner. Olsen chose Mike, but the axe missed his jugular vein, leaving his brain stem and one ear intact. Mike was then fed small grains of corn and worms, and water and milk through an eyedropper.

Mike survived for nearly two years being paraded around the country as a sideshow act, earning a substantial sum of money for the Olsen's. He perished in March 1947, due to choking on his mucous in a hotel room. His owners had left the syringes at a side show. Today, Fruita holds Mike the Headless Chicken days in May of every year.
