For all of you who love to let your dog hang out the window as you drive, do you know the dangers that poses to your dog?

The first thing is debris from the road is constantly being kicked up by other cars and hitting your windshield because you either hear it or you see a crack. Imagine all of that stuff hitting your dog in the face or even the eye. Your dog could be seriously hurt or lose an eye. I lost a windshield due to ice flying off a truck, then if your dog had it's head out the window and it got hit instead of my windshield.

If your dog is not restrained in your car while looking out the window, it could jump out or in case of an accident be thrown from the vehicle. If you drive with your small dog on your lap while you're driving and you get into and accident what do you think is going to happen to that dog? It's either going through the windshield, get thrown around the car hurting itself or you, or it will be killed on impact with the airbag. Any dogs not restrained in a car when you have an accident can be hurt, killed or can injure or kill you. They are going to be thrown around your vehicle. If they are not restrained and pose a risk to first responders, they can be shot so you can be saved. They may be thrown from the car and then lost to you.

I love traveling with my dog. The windows are never down, they wear leashes in the car, and nobody is allowed on my lap. Please know that I send this warning because I know what can happen and I don't want anything to happen to any animal if I can prevent it by warning someone of something they might not have known.

Pecans are a popular option for humans to eat or include in a variety of dishes. In moderation, these tree nuts can be a healthy snack for people, as they are full of potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Pecans are also a source of monounsaturated fats, which can help lower cholesterol.

Unfortunately, pecans are not good for dogs. Even a small number of these nuts can make your dog very sick, possibly causing neurological issues.

Can Dogs Eat Pecans?
If you are eating pecans or snacks filled with pecans, don’t share them with your dog. Dr. Jerry Klein, Chief Veterinary Officer for the AKC, explains that “though pecans are harmless to humans, pecans should not be given to dogs.”

Why are pecans bad for dogs? These nuts are toxic for dogs. Eating them can result in pets becoming sick and needing immediate veterinary care. “The reason pecans are considered toxic is that they contain a compound called juglone, also found in walnuts, that is harmful to dogs,” advises Dr. Klein. Juglone is naturally found in every part of pecans and can cause a variety of digestive issues if ingested.

The FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine itself allows illegal (per federal law) waste to be disposed of in animal feed and pet food with no warning or disclosure to consumers. Dr. Steven Solomon, director of FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine, stated “we do not believe that the use of diseased animals or animals that died otherwise than by slaughter to make animal food poses a safety concern and
we intend to continue to exercise enforcement discretion.”

The dangers of blue-green algae
Blue-green algae is a microscopic organism that can be found in a variety of water sources, including freshwater lakes, ponds, and streams, Dr. Crow explains. Any dog who comes into contact with water that contains blue-green algae is at risk of getting sick. “For dogs, exposure often occurs when they drink contaminated water, lick their fur after swimming, or even inhale water droplets from an algal bloom,” Dr. Crow says.

All animals, including cats and humans, can be harmed by blue-green algae — but dogs are at especially high risk, since cats are less likely to swim and pickier about what water they drink. In humans, blue-green algae causes symptoms including numbness, dizziness, vomiting, and abdominal pain but is not fatal.

Once ingested, blue-green algae is extremely dangerous. Many species of the cyanobacteria produce toxins that affect the liver, nervous system, and skin — this can happen within minutes to hours. “Liver toxins can cause symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, blood in the stool or vomit, weakness, and jaundice,” Dr. Crow says. “Neurotoxins can lead to more immediate and severe symptoms like drooling, muscle tremors, difficulty breathing, seizures, and even sudden death.”

If your pet shows symptoms or you think they may have ingested water containing blue-green algae, it’s important to get them to a veterinarian as soon as possible. “Detecting blue-green algae exposure can be challenging because the symptoms are often non-specific and can resemble other conditions,” Dr. Crow says. Diagnostic tests, clinical signs, and exposure history can help vets make their diagnosis. Though there’s no cure for blue-green algae poisoning, vets can help manage a pet’s symptoms.

I saw this post from a dog owner and felt I owed it to his dog to share it and hopefully save some other dogs.

Today we say goodbye to our Molly. SHe had some GI issues and we brought her to an animal hospital in Port Richey. They prescribed some antibiotics and Bravecto for fleas. The vet said they thought the fleas might be a contributing factor. My wife looked up reviews for that med which is said to cause seizures and death. The vet said not to worry about the reviews because more people post bad reviews then good, since the animals doing good their is not much of a drive to post. That kind of made since. I am a nurse not a vet, but I should have seen the signs. I gave her gabapentin and Flagyl for the GI, and gave her Bravecto for the fleas. She didn't want to take the Bravecto and she spit it out even in cheese and sausage. I made her swallow it. This was at midnight. I woke up at 7 and saw her seizing. She expired shortly after. She must have been hanging on because she didn't want to die alone and without saying goodbye. I feel so guilty because I didn't see the signs. I think she was trying to tell me that she knew I was giving her poison and I made her take it anyway. I was wanting to do good and I listened to the advise of the vet instead of doing my own due diligence and checking out the new prescribed drugs. I am looking for any information about
the class action lawsuits against this drug company, and highly DO NOT RECOMMEND anyone to give this drug to their pet!
