First female of the year!
About two days after she emerges from pupae stage she is ready to mate. She will lay 500 eggs adjacent to fresh food waste and die about 3-5 days later.
Black soldier flies are very hygienic compared to house flies. They have no mouth parts as an adult and only live about a week. They are also a native species to central Texas and a pollinator!
