Pasture management is a bit of art and science together, especially when you are trying to manage it for a special needs horse.

Horses tend to graze young, new growth rather than older growth. The young plant is more palatable and if they keep grazing it, they will graze preferred areas and leave the rest. This short grass they are grazing can become overgrazed and become higher in sugar. It can also leave your pasture susceptible to w**d growth.

To know whether and when to mow and at what height, you need to know the type of grass in your pasture. If you aren’t good at grass/plant ID, contact your local county extension agent and make an appointment for a farm visit. They can help you ID what’s growing and how best to keep it growing for the nutrition you want.

Warm season grasses typically have a lower sugar profile than cool season grasses and their ideal mow height is lower. Warm season grasses are kept between 4-6” and cool season grasses are best kept between 6-8”.

To have your pastures provide you with the most AND safest grass it is best to subdivide the pastures into sizes that encourages your horse(s) to graze the area more evenly. You can then drag, mow and let the paddock rest. Including a dry, sacrifice or track can help to keep your pastures healthy and to keep your horse off the grass when it is likely that it would be stressed and produce higher sugars (frost, drought, over grazed).

Safergrass.org is another great source for information regarding grass and management for the best health of both.
