So the Goffin that was loose in Taylor/Romulus area yesterday apparently is tossed outside to fly free for the summer.

Let me count the way this is not safe for the bird.

1) there are a lot of natural predators out there for parrots. Raptors, dogs, cats, etc.

2) the bird flu is in Michigan. Enough that we require foot sanitation to enter our facility.

If your bird contracts the bird flu and brings it home, any other birds you have on the premises will be euthanized.

3) Your bird is not wild and cannot appropriately feed herself. Therefore you have no control over what he is ingesting.

4) As much as we say we love animals more than humans, there are a lot of really great humans out there that are going to try to take care of that bird to get that bird to safety because even people who don’t have Birds know that you don’t let your animals traverse the world without supervision

As such the Internet and good Samaritans will pile up and trip over each other to try to save this animal. You’re wasting all of our time.

5) FFS, take care of your animals.

71degrees! Corky is out. Little windy. Becareful with ur birds. Doesn't matter on the size. Or if u think their clipped. Their like little kites with their wings out. The wind pulls them right up even clipped. I learned it first hand with an umbrella that was clipped but I was hold he's feet. And all he did was open his wing and pulled my arm up above my head. Very scary. It wasn't windy when I went for the walk down my block. Enjoy the last few warm days carefully. ❤️

AVIAN RESCUE CASE OF THE DAY: IDENTIFYING A STOLEN PARROT

Almost 10 years ago, animal control brought this Moluccan Cockatoo to our veterinary hospital, Burge Bird Services, to evaluate his health after he was confiscated from a home where a lot of exotic animals were being kept in poor conditions. We looked at the band on his leg in order to put the number on his chart as we always do, and recognized the code immediately. He had been stolen about 6 months earlier from a pet store, where he had lived for several years, and had been a patient of ours. Thanks to that leg band, and after a lot of red tape, we were able to work with animal control, two police departments, and the pet store owner to get him back home.

If your bird was stolen or lost, do you have any way to prove that it is your pet? If it has a leg band, do you or your veterinarian have a record of it? Have you considered having a microchip implanted? If your bird already has a microchip, is all of your contact information updated with the registration company? Microchipping is a quick procedure which we do under a very brief anesthesia, because the needle is pretty big and we don't want our patients to feel it.
