“My dog bites when I try to take something away from him.”
02/14/2024
“When can I stop giving treats?”
02/11/2024
My advice for new puppy owners:
Focus on Potty Training above all else. If anyone tells you that you cannot take the pup out until the shots are complete (including your vet), run!!!
Early puppy socialization has a limited window, and socialization does NOT just mean playing with other dogs.
Don't teach sit and down too close to one another, same goes for leave it and drop it. Space it out so the pup isn't merely guessing which one you're asking for.
Prioritize COME over Sit or any other command. Reward for Come every single time, and reward before giving another command (like Sit).
Make sure you are rewarding, not bribing or luring.
Be generous with rewards. you can think about lessening the treats much later on (not any time soon).
Good luck, and have fun!!!

Chance’s first open trail!

After countless attempts since April, Milan the Wonder Beagle FINALLY got her Intro to Mantrailing certificate. She enjoyed "beagling" that day! Can't wait for open trails with my very own Snoppy!

"Bring your dog out every hour"
"Put p*e pads all over the home"
"Take your dog for a long walk until they do their business"
"Wait for the dog to sniff the floor, then take them out"
and SO MANY MORE mistakes that people make when potty training, and usually because of bad advice from family/friends or online.
Potty train your dog the right way from the start.

Does your Home Owners Insurance provider say you can't be insured if you have certain breeds? If so, consider State Farm: https://www.statefarm.com/simple-insights/family/its-not-the-breed-its-the-dog-bite
I'm a new home owner and just happened to get HOI from State Farm because I met an agent I wanted to work with (I didn't bother shopping for any other quotes). I haven't read the entirety of the policy, but I never saw anything on breed restrictions. That's when I chanced upon that link.
Good to know, right? And good job, State Farm!
Dog bites can happen regardless of the breed, so use caution around canines.

Excited for Introduction to Mantrailing!, headed to CT bright and early with Milan the Wonder Beagle and Training Chance. Milan refused the banana reward for getting into the crate (first time to refuse a treat EVER). Might have just been a fluke, I thought, so off to CT we went. An hour in, we had to turn back. Milan was not well.
Likely a case of HGE. Waiting for blood work and x-ray results at Veterinary Emergency Group, Union.
It was my first time to see how x-rays are done. Milan stared at me the entire time while laying there, helpless. She was so cooperative though. She truly is a great dog. Vets tell me that all the time.
During our potty break just now, she bolted for a piece of tissue on the sidewalk. THAT is the Milan I know.

A couple nights ago, I let the girls out of the crate as soon as I got home and noticed Training Chance bumped into something. We just moved to a new house, nothing is in its place, so maybe furniture was in her way? But on the way out to potty, she threw up, then lost her balance. We rushed to the ER. During traffic stops I would check on her; I noticed rapid eye movement (left to right) which freaked me out. Just that morning we were snuggling in bed more than we'd ever, so this happening hours later was surreal.
Vestibular Neuronitis. Ear infection affecting balance. No real cause, can just happen in a snap. Wow.
https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/vestibular-disease-in-dogs
They gave her something for the nausea via IV, then I took home two oral meds and ear wash.
It's been two nights since and the ear tilt is still there, rapid eye movement is very slight now (thank goodness), balance has improved but is nowhere close to normal; We sleep with her in the middle of my bed so she doesn't fall, and I carry her down the stairs every time. I hate seeing her like this, but at the rate she is going, hopefully she will be fine by the weekend. And hopefully it isn't a lifelong thing like it is for some senior dogs.

I am outraged by the videos of Bubba Luv's owner abusing a dog in his dog training facility in Rahway, NJ. UNBELIEVABLE.
I am speaking up because THISSSS is why I have always said I do not recommend BOARD AND TRAIN.
First, you don't know how your dog is being treated. This is not at all to say that all board and train facilities abuse dogs. But you're not there, so you just don't know.
Second, training is about building a relationship between trainer and dog. So YOU, the dog's owner, are the one who should have that relationship with the dog, not someone who your dog will one day never see again.
Third, you need to know how it's done, and learn what to do. I can give you a super computer, but if you don't even know where the "on" switch is, then it's a useless piece of junk.
Lastly, it's the journey, not the destination. Why get a dog if you don't have time for it or don't care to put in the time to grow with it?

Nature vs nurture… With Loki waiting for his 3rd specimen collection. From the moment I saw a video of this pup (4 weeks old), I knew he was special. He is a perfect dog, and that’s saying a lot. I adopted Jorge and Chance, raised Milan (8 weeks), trained countless dogs, and helped raise Loki. In the end, nature trumps nurture. I have never recommended keeping a dog intact till Loki, but his family wants him neutered and he apparently has an undescended testicle anyway (so, no choice). I want the option to breed his line in the future, and if I am able to have even just one pup with a temperament like Loki’s, the huge expense would be worth it. #besomomma #dogtraining #dogtrainer #spermfreezing #germanshepherd #gsd #germanshepherddog
