Gizmo is helping raise funds for Will and Laura who successfully saved the lives of over 275 animals when Hurricane Ian struck Pine Island off the coast of Florida. This picture was taken shortly after over 20 volunteers helped them transport over 275 parrots, and 2 Lemurs, off of Pine island before they succumbed to starvation and dehydration. Will and Laura are the true heroes of this story. They are avid animal lovers and have been passionate aviculturists for over 40 years. Both refused to leave their animals behind when all residents of Pine Island were encouraged to evacuate. Instead, they worked for hours to catch every bird and bring them inside their 12 foot stilt house. They rode out the storm and worked day and night in the following days to make sure they kept every bird alive. Their sanctuary Malama Manu, means “Protect, Preserve & Nurture Birds” in Hawaiian.. and that’s exactly what they did. They have helped me keep sick and injured birds alive. Most recently, they helped us hatch a very rare parrot and managed to keep it alive for us during the hurricane! Their home and their Bird Sanctuary were completely destroyed by Hurricane Ian. Help us rebuild their sanctuary so they can continue to preserve, protect and nurture birds. All donations are completely dedicated to Malama Manu parrots and their continued care during the rebuild.
