For our surgeons at SVS, surgery in an art form. And that includes closing the surgery site with the most beautifully cosmetic incision line possible 🪡 I’d call this one a work of art – how about you? 🖌🎨
Have you ever heard of Shockwave Therapy? 💥💥
Shockwave therapy is done as standard practice after every orthopedic surgery and is included in our flat-rate price. This tool pushes high energy shock waves through tissues to stimulate the healing and regrowth of bone, tendons, ligaments, soft tissue, and wounds.
Though the technology has been on the market for years and is often used by bodybuilders, it has only been in rehab circuits for a short while and is not very utilized after surgery. But as you know, at SVS, we always make a point to offer the most cutting-edge technology, and shockwave therapy is just one example of how we are continuously enhancing our practice.

SURGERY CENTER UPDATE: In addition to a new roof, we also have walls! After looking at blueprint after blueprint for months and months, it’s so satisfying to finally see our plan come to life! 🤩😍😎
SURGERY CENTER UPDATE: I’ll let Doc give you this update – her excitement in the video says it all 🥰🤩
SURGERY CENTER UPDATE: To say we had to tear the new surgery center building down to it’s bones would be an understatement. More like, we had to replace it’s bones altogether. >> Insert orthopedic surgery joke here

SURGERY CENTER UPDATE: It’s the story you’ve heard again and again - After our initial demo, we faced a roadblock with the city permitting office. Our new building sat vacant and untouched for months as we tried to get approval to start on the large structural renovations.
The process was extremely disheartening, but we used the time to plan out every aspect of the new clinic. Doc had already worked with the architect to translate her layout idea into a blueprint, but now we dove into the nitty gritty details: picking out the exact lockers for the staff break room, selecting just the right lights for the surgery suites, deciding how the medical supplies would be organized within the cupboards.
A bit Type A, you might be thinking? Yes, 100%. But that’s Dr. Simon’s style. This new clinic is her and Nathan’s baby, so anticipating hiccups and ensuring the process is executed just as they envision was top priority.
And all that planning paid off. Once the permits were approved in Dec 2023, we were able to hit the ground running. And so far *knock on wood*, it’s been smooth sailing.
Stop and smell the roses? 🌹 Nah, I say stop and scritch a cat 🐈
SURGERY CENTER UPDATE: The building we purchased was originally an office space. But with Doc’s secret talent for designing floorplans, we knew we had to demo the entire building to give her a blank canvas to work with.
And so, we enlisted our friends and family to help us tear down the inefficient office layout and make room for bigger and better ideas. Not surprisingly, the more layers we peeled away, the more issues we found. As such, this small demo turned into a giant project, eventually requiring us to bring in some processionals to make some major structural renovations.
But, we’ll get to that later. For now, let’s just enjoy the SVS team taking a sledge hammer to an unsuspecting wall 😊
We love our tech, Luke - always staying one step ahead. Check out this guy just making pressure wraps in his spare time to have on hand for when we remove catheters. What an angel 😻😇

Though this race was slow-moving at first, we are quickly gaining momentum. Tune in for more as I fill you in on what we’ve been up to for the last 2 years and where we are headed next!

The ear canal is composed of a horizontal and lateral component. Our little Gertie was born with an elongated lateral component that needed to be opened up to the level of the horizontal component.
By doing so, it facilitates airflow and drainage as discharge no longer has to fight gravity. This in turn keeps the ear clean and dry with a much lower chance of infection.
Doc prefers this resection technique because Gertie will be able to maintain her hearing, as opposed to the more traditional Total Ear Canal Ablation approach.
Bred to exaggerate the Bully Breed features, Gertie is a great example of genetic selection gone too far. Yes, she is short, squat, and adorable, but it comes at the cost of her health.
After Gertie’s rescue owners brought her in for an evaluation, Doc determined that she would need a bilateral TPLO, bilateral ear canal resection, a cleft palate repair, and of course, a spay to prevent the propagation of these traits.
Since this is a quite an undertaking for our little gal, Doc performed these surgeries across two separate days, allowing Gert adequate time to recover in the interim. In this photo, our sleepy patient is waking up from Round 1.
Tune into the next post to learn about her lateral ear canal resection …

SURGERY CENTER UPDATE: To say we had to tear the new surgery center building down to it’s bones would be an understatement. More like, we had to replace it’s bones altogether. >> Insert orthopedic surgery joke here << Just to name a few of the big ticket items … We kicked out the back wall and added an additional 10 feet to the building, replaced the entire roof and raised half of it 6 inches, tore down a 52 foot concrete wall and replaced it with a massive load-bearing beam, and put in all new plumbing. When you can look up and see daylight coming through the roof, it can be a bit nerve-wracking, so we are very much in a ‘trust the process’ moment. Luckily, we are working with some great contractors and we are seeing progress every day. It’s so exciting to see Doc’s vision come to life and we know that it will continue to look more and more like a surgery center as we move forward. Keep checking in for more updates on our progress! #vetsurgery #vetlife #pethospital #orthopedicsurgeon #veterinary #SVS #smallbusinesslove #veterinarysurgeons #petrehabilitation #StateOfTheArtFacility

In last week’s blog, we discussed the topic of nutritional bone disorder (rickets), explaining how - if treated correctly - rickets patients can go on to live a long and healthy life. This week, we want to introduce you to Moshe, another SVS rickets warrior 💪🦸♂️ When this sweet guy was adopted, he had an unknown medical history and was brought to us for a right femoral fracture repair. During the consult, Dr. Simon could tell that there was much more to Moshe’s story than just the fracture. He had very thin bone cortices and low bony density throughout his body – a clear sign of nutritional bone disorder. In addition to the fracture repair, Doc also started Moshe on a nutritional treatment plan to ensure he was receiving the proper balance of key bone forming nutrients. A week later, Dr. Simon could feel that his bones were already much stronger and the radiographs showed increased bone density. A year later, Moshe is still doing great and continues to melt our hearts 💖. Watching patients like him bounce back from tremendous setbacks is what it’s all about!
Welcome to our very first HOWL-O-WEEN GIVEAWAY! 🎃👻 We absolutely loved seeing all the doggo photos shared with us on National Dog Day, so this time we want to take it one step further and offer a chance to win an assortment of SVS hand-selected supplements ($200 value) for your pup! DID YOU KNOW: SVS includes cold laser therapy with every surgery and recheck? SVS believes in providing the highest quality medicine available, so to that end, each patient receives cold laser therapy immediately after surgery and at every recheck appointment. Unlike traditional pain control that suppresses inflammation, cold laser therapy uses infrared light emissions to encourage the body’s cells to reduce inflammation, which in turn decreases swelling, pain, and recovery time. One way Dr. Simon evaluates knee injuries is by palpating the joint to see if there is excessive sliding between the tibia and femur bones. For these two dogs, it’s easy to see this sliding motion, which means the cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) has been torn. If left untreated, the sliding motion will create long-term inflammation, which in turn, will lead to osteoarthritis and chronic pain. To correct this problem, these pups are here today for a TPLO surgery to adjust the angle of the tibial plateau and stabilize the joint. If you dog has a CCL injury, give us a call today for a free quote!
