Hello California, I am looking at you 👀🙄🥴🫤🤯😫

There is an alarming number of states that have no department or licensing process for dog breeders. While some states rely on their counties for enforcement, they have no centralized location for records or inspections on these facilities nor do they have the designated staff for this department. This is extremely concerning considering our research shows that there is a high number of breeders selling to stores and online from these states.

Researching before you buy is the most crucial step in avoiding puppy mills or cruel breeding operations. No one wants to know that their puppy’s parents are suffering in a cage across the country.

Hi friends! I don’t know if you’ve heard, but I saw my bff today 🥰🥳
We’re starting with bloodwork to try to figure out what might be making it hard for me to keep food down. But you know how expensive diagnostics and the figuring-stuff-out can be 😖
If you could donate even a dollar to help me, I will be so grateful! The humans said that you can go to the link in our profile bio to make a one-time donation 🧐😎
We haven’t received many donations at all for my medical care, and I know that I have been out of the shelter for a few years now… but I really want to get to the bottom of everything so that I can be adopted! 🤩😍
Speaking of which!… Do you know anyone who wants to adopt me!? I might have to move before November… and I really want a family before the holidays 🥹🥺
Can you share my face so that my people might find me?! 🤪😍
Thanks for listening and supporting me! —Twain aka Twizzle aka T-Wiz aka T-Pain 🖤🤍

There is a troubling increase in the number of animals killed on Los Angeles streets in 2024. Data from the City of Los Angeles’ 311 service shows that the Los Angeles Department of Sanitation has been called 18,859 times for dead animal removal between January 1 and July 31, marking a significant 15% increase from 2023 and a 28% rise from 2021. The trend of rising animal deaths on L.A. roads has persisted over the past four years, with 2024 being the worst year yet.

The animals affected range from feral cats and dogs to local wildlife like rabbits and opossums, many of which are struck by vehicles. The spring and summer months are particularly deadly due to “kitten season,” when many animals give birth. Despite efforts to rescue these animals, the numbers continue to climb.

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - The Columbus Police Department is conducting a search warrant at Columbus Animal Care and Control.

Our crews say the Drug Enforcement Administration is also on the scene.

The reason for this search is not known. However, at the beginning of this month, Columbus police launched an investigation following several complaints lodged by citizens against the Columbus Animal Care & Control Center.

Austin Pets Alive!’s Parvo Puppy ICU, the first of its kind in the nation, provides life-saving care to puppies diagnosed with parvovirus, offering an alternative to euthanasia.

Since 2008, they have treated nearly 8,000 puppies, saving around 500 lives each year from across Texas. The ICU also serves as a hub for parvo research, significantly reducing treatment costs and educating shelters nationwide.

🚩Using punishment to correct unwanted behaviors in dogs might seem effective in the short term, but the consequences are far-reaching and often damaging.

Punishment doesn’t address the root cause of the behavior; it merely suppresses it.

This can lead to suppressed warning signs of aggression, where a dog may skip over growling and jump straight to biting without prior signals. Additionally, punishment can suppress not just the unwanted behavior but other behaviors, resulting in a dog that becomes fearful, anxious, and less willing to engage with their environment.

Instead of using punishment, consider positive reinforcement to encourage desired behaviors. Teaching your dog what you want them to do in a supportive and understanding way not only builds trust but also leads to long-lasting behavior change. Managing the environment and providing clear, consistent reinforcement for good behavior creates a happier, healthier relationship with your dog.

Swipe through to learn more about the fallout of punishment and discover effective, humane alternatives for changing behavior without resorting to aversive techniques.

Over 50 cats were rescued from a home in Irvine on Wednesday when officers with the Irvine Police Animal Services found Ragdoll and British Shorthair kittens and cats.

Police said a woman was breeding them and selling them for up to $1,000.

Some of the animals looked malnourished and with poor health, according to police. The woman released the cats to the Irvine Animal Care Center as the staff quickly gave them medical treatment.

Always do your due diligence; think before you buy.

At the request of the St. Petersburg Police Department, the ASPCA is on the ground in Pinellas County assisting with the investigation of a suspected dogfighting operation across multiple locations in Florida that resulted in the seizure of more than 100 dogs. We are providing subject matter expertise, including offering legal support and conducting veterinary and behavior forensic exams on all the dogs to support the investigation. We are also on standby to provide ongoing sheltering, medical care and behavioral treatment and enrichment for many of the dogs at an animal cruelty recovery facility once disposition is determined.

Upon veterinary forensic examination of the dogs, ASPCA experts found that many of the dogs had scarring consistent with organized dogfighting and many of the dogs had untreated medical conditions.

The article “Decolonizing Animal Welfare Through a Social Justice Framework” by Johnny L. Jenkins, Jr. and Mueni L. Rudd discusses how animal welfare can be more inclusive by addressing disparities affecting marginalized communities. It emphasizes the need for animal welfare to incorporate racial, gender, disability, and environmental justice, arguing that these frameworks are essential for creating equitable, culturally competent spaces. The authors highlight the importance of participatory research that partners with marginalized communities to disrupt the status quo in animal welfare and improve human-animal well-being.

Shelters are so overcrowded in Los Angeles right now that puppies like these lil ones are even being overlooked. These three puppies came in to the shelter yesterday and were available starting today. They were still there after 9am this morning. If they didn't go home today, you can adopt them tomorrow starting at 8am. There are other puppies that are also available!

There are currently 67,019 puppies for sale on Puppies.com with more than 15,000 active breeder profiles. Most of those puppies are coming from breeders in Texas, California, Florida, Missouri and Kansas.

Our team is currently doing an audit of all of the breeders who sell through Puppies.com to determine if they hold the proper licensing for their state or federally so we can file all of the complaints. We will share a short list of some of the more concerning facilities that sell through this site as well. While that massive project will take time, we will continue to share pieces of information that we learn with you all!

Please do your part in helping us put an end to the cruel puppy mill industry by reminding your friends, family and coworkers that it is easier to find a puppy mill online than it is a responsible breeder. Do your research before you buy, read the inspection reports, read the reviews, visit the parent dogs in person and don’t forget to reach out to your favorite researchers at Bailing Out Benji with any questions or concerns! Don’t forget that there are amazing animals waiting for you at your local rescue or shelter too- including many purebred and made-up mixed breeds!

If you are able to support our work, please consider making a donation! We are a small organization that isn’t afraid to take on big projects like this, if it means we can discover and put an end to inhumane breeding operations.

Remember that dog sociability is a spectrum 🌈 and that spectrum can and will likely change over time as your puppy develops from an explorative little tot, to an adolescent, to a full grown, sexually mature dog! Sociability usually changes as dogs enter their “teenage phase” and become sexually mature. Sound familiar? 🫶🏼😎

I encourage everyone to check out Behavior Vets.

They share quality, informed, research-backed information. And their online courses are absolutely fantastic! Highly recommend.

Dr. Elizabeth Congdon and Dr. Jessica Owens describe how play therapy reduced salivary cortisol levels in shelter dogs and improved behavioral responses and emotional regulation.

We discuss:
Study design with Calmr dog toys and goals

How play improved relationships and wellness for shelter dogs

Special design of Calmr toy mimics prey

How cortisol affects behavior

Thoughts on developing programs for shelters involving play therapy

Dr. Elizabeth Congdon is an Associate Professor of biology at Bethune-Cookman University with an extensive background in behavioral ecology, conservation biology, and science education. She is particularly interested in the relationship between social structure and dispersal in neotropical mammals, specifically capybaras. Locally, Dr. Congdon works with animal shelters to use data-driven strategies to improve the quality of life and adoption rates for the dogs and cats especially the large dogs and ‘bully breeds. The latest results from her team show that therapeutic play as an enrichment strategy can bring down cortisol with a lasting effect. She founded BEC Research, Inc to help fund these efforts and support student research projects.

The Fallouts of Punishment 👀🚩

Positive punishment involves adding an aversive stimulus to decrease unwanted behavior in dogs. This can include scolding, squirting water, using air horns, or physical corrections like poking. However, this approach can suppress warning signs of aggression and overall behavior, potentially leading to more severe issues without addressing the root cause of the problem.
