Cute Chaos! Tip 👇

Dog Training Tip: Dogs learn best when they’re rewarded for things they’re doing right. So many of us concentrate on correcting undesirable behaviors instead of noticing, marking and rewarding the good ones our dogs already display so often throughout the day! By consistently marking and rewarding these desirable actions, you’re more likely to encourage your dog to repeat them throughout the day, rather than simply focusing on what needs correction 😜

Curiosity and calmness go paw-in-paw 🐾 Bobby is taking in a new experience with a slider turtle, and it’s a perfect reminder that dogs can learn so much from the world around them. A key part of training is encouraging curiosity while also fostering calm, positive responses to new things. It’s all about building confidence, one interaction at a time! 🌿🐢

A crucial element of training reactive, fearful, and anxious dogs involves regularly and safely exposing them to situations that trigger their nervousness or fear. Behavioral issues in dogs often stem from their lack of familiarity with specific situations. For example, dogs may bark at others in public or freeze in new environments due to anxiety and fear. Desensitization, which involves gradually exposing dogs to feared stimuli, can help them adapt and behave better.

💡Similarly, consider the experience of starting a new job. Initially, you might feel anxious and uncertain about your role, your colleagues, and the company culture. However, as you gradually acquaint yourself with your coworkers, grasp your responsibilities, and become accustomed to the workplace dynamics, your anxiety subsides, and you gain comfort and confidence in your new position.

💞 It’s the same for dogs! Don’t hold your dogs away from experiencing life just because they’re reactive or scared! Instead expose them and show them that the world is a safe place with you by their side!!!

Many people quickly assume their dog’s issues are trauma-related. However, in my experience training both rescue dogs and those adopted as puppies or from breeders, I’ve found that what may appear as trauma-related behavior often has other causes!! This is why it’s essential to evaluate each dog individually to identify their specific struggles. I’ve often found that behavior issues arise from innate traits, genetics, and early experiences, including a lack of socialization during critical developmental stages.

💡When your dog takes control of the walk, whether by marking everything or pulling ahead, it reinforces anxiety, pushiness, and/or reactive behavior.

By guiding your dog and setting boundaries, you help them feel more secure and focused. This small shift in leadership can lead to big improvements in your dog’s behavior and confidence.

We warmly welcome dogs of all breeds and various circumstances. 🤗

‼️⚠️Forcing your dog to do something doesn’t teach them to THINK FOR THEMSELVES, which is crucial in our training approach. Instead, guide them toward the right behavior with patience and positive reinforcement—whether through toys, food, their environment, other people, yourself, or another dog, etc. These positive reinforcement tools help them build the confidence to make good decisions independently. Interested in learning how to encourage this mindset? Schedule a session (link in bio).
