My mission is to help owners and their dogs become a team- building the best relationship possible, through trust and communication. After several years in the music industry, I decided to re-educate myself in 2015 and become a dog trainer. I grew up with large dogs, share my home with two small dogs of my own, and have several years of experience volunteering for Santa Monica Animal Shelter, Los

Angeles Animal Services, and as a canine foster โ€œparentโ€ for Best Friends Los Angeles. After a year+ in the Dog Obedience Program at Animal Behavior College, I received my ABCDT, and in 2020 I completed a Certificate in Applied Animal Behavior (UW-AAB) from the University of Washington. Another FREE pre-baby bootcamp (courtesy of Pooch Parenting) starting on May 21! If youโ€™re expecting a tiny human, I recommend signing up for this!

FREE BOOTCAMP Alert!

There are loads of books available to prepare expecting or adopting families.
But very few include details for how to prepare your fur baby for the new addition.

As a dog and child specialist, I've got you. I've seen it all and can tell you with complete confidence that most dogs need time and support to adapt to their new circumstances.

In my upcoming free pre-baby bootcamp, starting on May 21, 2024, I will tell you what baby books don't tell parents with dogs.

They don't warn you that...
๐Ÿคฏ tired dogs are cranky - and with baby waking at all hours, your dog may too
๐Ÿคฏ dogs struggle when their schedules change - and babies are NOT predictable
๐Ÿคฏ not all dog licking is "kissing" - it can represent stress
๐Ÿคฏ even the best dogs can bite - including yours
๐Ÿคฏ your dog may need a new spot to sleep - a loose dog can not be in the same room as your baby if you are resting, exhausted or asleep
๐Ÿคฏ you will have lots of visitors which can add lots of stress to many dogs
๐Ÿคฏ some dogs are predatory around babies - and this can be managed safely if you have support
๐Ÿคฏ there is more to preparing your dog than simply having a reliable sit
You don't have to figure this out by yourself.

Sign up for my FREE Pre-baby bootcamp for dog parents. There is no better time to start preparing your dog than NOW.

Super valuable resources below, as we come into snake season here. El Paseo Animal Hospital is in Palm Desert, should you ever need snake bite treatment.

THE PICTURED SNAKE IS MUZZLED FOR EXAMINATION PURPOSES AND HANDLED BY A VETERINARIAN WITH VENOMOUS SNAKE TRAINING. DO NOT HANDLE RATTLESNAKES YOURSELF.

With those of us in the Northern Hemisphere coming into snake season, I felt it was appropriate to make a post about venomous snakes and our pets.
Of the roughly 3500 species of snakes in the world about 6% are venomous enough to present a possible medical concern. All snakes play an important role in the ecosystems that they are a part of. They are particularly important for rodent and infectious disease control.

The best tool on our belts to keep us safe is education. Look up the species of snakes in your geographic region as there are plenty of good resources to help you visually recognise a potentially dangerous species and carefully leave the area if you come across them in their home. If you see one around your home calling a relocation professional and keeping everyone inside until they arrive is the safest call. Eliminate property clutter and rodents to keep snakes from enjoying the stay. Trying to kill the snake may be illegal depending on how endangered the species is and most snake bites to people occur when someone untrained is trying to move or kill a snake.

If you suspect that your pet has been bitten by a venomous snake, immediate examination is recommended to assist in determining necessary treatment. Keep your pet as calm and still as possible while transporting to your nearest vet that stocks antivenom. Modern envenomation research shows us that things like the rattlesnake vaccine, steroids, NSAIDS, antibiotics, and Benadryl are not appropriate treatments or preventatives for snake envenomations and some of these things could actually put your pet at greater risk. The National Snakebite Support group is a fantastic resource for bites to both pets and people and our own Dr. Jeffrey is an expert volunteer helping to guide people through pet envenomations across the nation and advocating for gold standard medical treatment.

Which circle are you in?

Dogs behave the way they do for many reasons. They do NOT do things deliberately to be stubborn or โ€˜naughtyโ€™, nor do they aim to assert control. Outdated mythologies and training methods have detrimental effects on well-being and strain the relationship between a dog and their caregiver.

๐ŸงฌA dog's breed and genetic makeup can play a significant role in determining certain behavioural traits. Dogs have genetic predispositions and breed-specific tendencies that contribute to their behaviour.
Some breeds are predisposed to specific behaviours, such as herding, hunting, or guarding.

The environment in which a dog is raised and lives can profoundly impact their behaviour. Early socialisation, which involves exposing a puppy to a wide range of people, animals, and environments during their critical developmental period, is crucial for building confidence and shaping a dog's social behaviour to reduce fear or aggression.

Overstimulation can cause all kinds of unwanted behaviours as it overwhelms their senses and can lead to hyperactivity or erratic responses. For example, if a dog is exposed to loud noises, multiple people, and various stimuli all at once, or on a daily basis, they might exhibit excessive excitable behaviour, poor impulse control, become agitated and exhibit behaviours like jumping, barking, or pulling on the leash, as their senses are overwhelmed by the excessive input.

Previous experiences and learning consequences can influence a dog's behaviour. Traumatic experiences, in particular, can lead to fear, anxiety, or aggression.

How a dog is trained and educated by their caregiver or handler can significantly affect their behaviour. Consistent, positive reinforcement-based training can lead to desired behaviours, while harsh or inconsistent methods can result in confusion or fear.

A dog's health, including their physical and mental well-being, can influence their behaviour. Illness, pain, or discomfort can lead to changes in behaviour.

A dog's emotional state, including fear, anxiety, and excitement, can affect their behaviour. For example, a fearful dog may display unpredictable defensive reactive behaviours or might avoid any encounters and run away trying to hide. While a confident dog may exhibit playfulness and a relaxed demeanour.

A dog can become frustrated and destructive if their mental and physical needs are not met. This dog, full of pent-up energy and boredom, may become frustrated and exhibit poor impulse control. In their frustration, they might resort to destructive behaviours, such as chewing furniture, digging up the garden, or incessant barking. This destructive behaviour is often an expression of their frustration and an attempt to alleviate their built-up energy and mental stress.

The type of diet a dog receives can significantly influence their behaviour, with high-quality nutrition promoting better energy levels, mood, and overall well-being, while poor diet choices can lead to issues like irritability, hyperactivity, or digestive problems.

As dogs age, they may experience canine cognitive decline, which can manifest as changes in memory, learning, and behaviour. This condition can lead to increased confusion, disorientation, and altered social interactions in older dogs.

It is really important to understand that each dog is unique, and their behaviour can vary widely, even within the same breed. Dogs use body language, vocalizations, and other forms of communication to express their needs, emotions, and intentions. Understanding a dog's communication cues is essential for interpreting their behaviour.
