Golden Years Dog Sanctuary

Golden Years Dog Sanctuary Saving senior dogs so they may enjoy the last bit of their life with love and freedom from cages. Fostering at risk cats and kittens from local shelters.

Golden years dog sanctuary is our way to help senior dogs. My husband and I rescue senior dogs from local shelters to give them the best of the rest of their life. Living in a semi-rural canyon outside Los Angeles dogs were dumped at our horse farm all the time. When the dogs stopped being dumped; we went to the shelters instead. we always went for the older, less attractive, dogs that no one else

wanted. Since we could only have 3 dogs in Los Angeles county, even though we own 11 acres; we obtained an excessive animal permit. Now we can have up to 18 dogs at a time. we became a 501c so those who would like to help up feed and care for these dogs can make their contribution tax deductible. We have expanded our rescue efforts by fostering dogs as well as always having 18 at the sanctuary. join us in saving a life: Foster or adopt today.

This makeover made my day! Check out chummy now!! We rescued Chummy, aka, Howie, , from the palmdale on June 16,2025. He was a mess! The shelter wanted euthanizen, because they said that it was difficult to handle and sensitive to touch. But lo and behold, once who rescued him that really wasn't the case, he did have one sensitive spot on his belly and he was senses about his ears, but otherwise he's been a total sweetheart in his foster home. And look at the grooming he had today. We're so happy that we can give these senior dogs the best of the rest of their life.We can't do this without your help. Our expenses so far this year are greater than the donations we have received. we can't continue to do what we're doing, and save all these dogs and give them such great lives without the financial support to be able to pay for all their medical expenses. Please consider making the donation today. Support our fundraiser for Mrs. Field's cookies https://brandnamefundraising.com/raise/GoldenYearsDogSanctuary
or buy a shirt from our store! https://golden-years-dog-sanctuary.printify.me/All these things will help us in our efforts to save senior dogs out of the shelters and give them the best of the rest of their lives.

We cannot take them into foster unless we get tally adopted, she needs to be the only cat in an adult only home. She might be good with other cats. Enough cute kitten pictures for you? These are our kittens, and they are returning back to the castaic shelter in a week, to get spayed and neutered. we hate for our kittens to have to go in cages. We need people to make a commitments to adopt today. If we don't get commitments to adopt, then when they go back to the shelter next week, they will get spayed and neutered, and they will sit in a cage and wait for people to adopt them. We need to send them back to shelter, because they're ready to be adopted, and there are several cats at the shelter that we need to take into foster. we can't take new cats into foster unless we make space so save a life and adopt today, adopt two. They're small! kittens go better in pairs. their mom needs to be adopted also. Another deadline dog is safe tonight! Meet copperhead, aka sunny, , from the Downey shelter. This sweet. 9-year-old senior was owner surrendered on May 30th, 2025. they said they were allergic to him... after having him his whole life? I don't buy it, doesn't matter. He's safe now. Of course, nobody wanted him at the shelter, because pit bulls are a dime-a-dozen. but this guy's super friendly and nice. He seems to be good with other dogs. He's definitely great with people. He's gonna be available for adoption very soon. He goes to his foster home tomorrow after he sees the vet.And we're very excited to give him a home, but we can't wait for him to have his forever home. Adopt or foster today!

Update: in a foster home!!!
Check out Carousel...previously known as chepi, from the Baldwin Park shelter. This poor guy first came to the shelter in 2014 as a puppy. He was adopted and then he was returned to the shelter for being old on June 24, 2025. He is 11 and very spunky....especially considering he is " vision impaired." I can't figure out if he's completely blind because he seems to at least save shadows. He definitely hears very well. The vet is going to see him on Thursday, and we'll get more answers on him. We would love to get him into a forever home as living in our sanctuary, might not be the best situation for him if he is blind. He can't be at the barn, and I'm not sure that the alpha males in the backyard will tolerate him bumping into them. So, if you are up for saving a life, we would love to find a foster for this sweet sweet boy.

You're not seeing double....we rescued TWO super sweet senior mini poodles from the castaic shelter!
Meet 14year old Chillbert, aka Joey, . He was brought to the shelter as a stray on June 12th. he might have a little bit of dementia. we'll see what time will tell, he's going to see the vet this week and will get blood work And an exam. we will figure out how we can give him the best of the rest of his life
Later in the day, we rescued Clinton aka snowy . He is a 10-year-old mini poodle, who was also brought to the shelter in as a stray. No one claimed either of these little dogs, we couldn't let them sit there and thanks to the great help of Randi, we were able to get fosters for both these dogs and get them both out of the shelter, making more space for all those stray dogs that are coming in on July 4th. If ever there was a time to adopt their foster, it is this week before the fireworks go off. Come join our team and foster today. I lay my hand in your paw, I kiss your precious nose, you lay in the strangest positions I ever saw, to remember you, I'll pick this rose...sweet Chaplin RIP. We rescued chaplin, aka buddy from castaic shelter, on June 3rd, this poor pathetic looking 14-year-old boxer mix probably should have been euthanized by his owners. but of course, he wasn't. instead he was dumped at the shelter. So we rescued him hoping we could give him some peace and love. He never stood up straight, and he always hung his head low. He would lay in these really awkward positions, but he enjoyed himself. he liked walking around and going on his walks. but lately we noticed he was getting skinnier, he was less active, and he was eating less. He was going down that cul-de-sac of no return. We really questioned when was the right time to say Goodbye. Even today, we hemmed and hawed because he did want to walk around with us. But he seemed like he was struggling to breathe, he was losing weight, and he just didn't seem happy. And while he liked to follow us around, that's not enough quality of life. So we made that painful decision that we're forced to make all the time with these senior dogs to say goodbye to his pain and let him finally be at peace. So, as I wrote in my poem, I held his paw, my husband kissed his nose, and we watched him take his last breath. And if there is a rainbow bridge, we know he's on the other side, joyfully playing. # seniordog

You're not seeing double or triple, we have 6 kittens:, 3 tabbies that are almost triplets, 2 black kittens and a Gray kitten. We are fostering them all for the castaic animal care shelter. They will be going back to to shelter in about a week to get spayed and neutered. we would love for them to have a commitment to adopt before they go back to the shelter. We can't take them back after they get fixed. So if we don't have a commitment to adopt, they're going to go to the shelter and then sit in a cage and wait. They have been with us since they were 12 days old. We don't want to traumatize them by having them go live in a cage at the shelter. So make a commitment to adopt today. They're approximately 7 weeks. They're all super friendly. I think it's best for kittens to go to a home with another playful young cat or be adopted in pairs. That way they can get into mischief together, stay confident together, and grow up with family. Call or email Susan with any questions. 818.636.1522 [email protected]

Minny, , is returning to the castaic shelter to be spayed. We took her and her, then 12 day old kittens into foster on may 24. She and her kittens are ready for adoption. If we don't have a commitment to adopt for her, she will sit in a cage and wait for a forever home after she is spayed. We can't do that to her. the shelters are crowded and no cat wants to stay in a cage and risk being euthanized. so please step up and adopt today! You can come meet her at our home in sylmar, and then take her home from the shelter the day she is spayed. Call or email Susan with any questions. 818.636.1522 [email protected]

Our Story

Now a 501c3 non-profit organization! Our mission is to provide a loving home to at-risk and senior dogs and to foster at risk cats and kittens.

My husband and I started Golden Years Dog Sanctuary to help senior dogs. We love to rescue senior dogs from local shelters to give them love and freedom until their time is up. Living in a semi-rural canyon outside Los Angeles dogs were dumped at our horse farm all the time. When the dogs stopped being dumped; I went to the shelters instead. I always went for the older, less attractive, dogs that no one else wanted. Since we could only have 3 dogs in Los Angeles county, even though we own 11 acres; we obtained an excessive animal permit. Now we can have up to 18 dogs at a time.

I also volunteer at the Los Angeles County Castaic Animal Shelter. We started fostering unweaned and weaned kittens in 2017. We fostered 30 kittens and momma cats in 2017. Most of these kittens need extra veterinarian care and special food. We paid for those costs ourselves because it was important for us to fight for these kittens and help them become healthy enough to adopt.

In 2018, I asked if we could also work with the “feral” cats. Any cat that hisses, strikes, tries to bite, or is otherwise unmanageable when it comes into the shelter is deemed a “Caution” or feral cat. Most of those cats get euthanized. Since the beginning of 2018, we have worked with nearly a dozen of these ‘feral” cats, helping them overcome their fears and finding them loving homes.
