Here is Dog Days Search & Rescue’s side of Maggie’s rescue. We really can’t thank them enough.
We often get those dreaded calls..."My 10 lb dog escaped, and I live near open space." These make our heart drop as we know the areas are filled with predators. Experience also tells us little dogs can be amazing at staying safe!
A message came in on June 30th to one of our missing pets pages, newly adopted, 8 lb Maggie had just been adopted from Tails To The Wind Rescue and hadn't even made it into her new house. She wiggled and pulled right out of her harness and collar. Sadly, we see this often. Dogs give a false sense of security. They lay calm on your lap on the way home, and so you let your guard down when you arrive at home.
Maggie had no idea where she was and who she was with. She came from a hoarding case and had been in foster since March. Maggie took off down the street. She attempted to come back but got spooked and ran the other way.
We instructed them on what to do and was even told a neighbor had a trap and trapping experience. The area has lots of known predators, mountain lions, bobcats, and owls. We hoped for the best. Days went by, and no sightings came in. Our team was slammed with other cases and had told them to get lost posters up to generate sightings.
Fast forward to July 20th, and ( yes, 21 days after she escaped), the rescue got a message that a yorkie had been spotted running into the bushes! We couldn't believe it. Had people been seeing her? Had people been feeding her? Where had she been all this time?
Our team went right out but, unfortunately, couldn't locate her. We talked to the security guards, and the HOA team, and neighbors and found out why there had been no sightings, no one knew that little Maggie was missing. Unfortunately, posters are not allowed in the community so nothing had gone up 🤦♀️.
Ok, time to backtrack. We gave the guards and the HOA flyers, her owner was instructed to drop a flyer at all houses in the immediate area. We needed to get more sightings. Of course, people started to call and they had seen her!!
We narrowed down where we thought she could be and put out cameras. Hours later, our cameras went off. We held our breath. It was a fox! A beautiful fox who ate some of the chicken we left in front of the camera. At least he left some chicken because Maggie showed up on camera shortly after the fox left!! We couldn't believe it. 21 days in this area, and we confirmed she was alive!
We quickly ran back out and set up a trap, but she didn't come back. We would go out and bait the trap and the next few nights without even a glimpse of her.
Finally, on Monday night, Ms. Maggie walked right into our trap! But our excitement quickly turned to despair as we watched her eat an entire bowl of chicken and walk back out of the trap. Our trap malfunctioned! Our hearts broke. We didn't understand. The trap had been tested numerous times.
We went out again, switched traps, discovered a manufacturer defect, and rebaited the new trap. After hours of sitting, waiting for her to show up, and she not, we sadly drove home. We were into this rescue almost 35 hours in just 4 days! These kinds of rescues are exhausting, mentally & physically. We were not able to figure her pattern so we stayed steady and kept the trap and camera in position. Our team losing sleep every time a mouse or other critter stopped by the trap as the camera went off. We were not giving up.
Then, a miracle happened. Day 26, Maggie showed up on a second camera we had positioned nearby, and she was headed for the trap! It was 3 am. (the latest we had ever seen her on camera), and we were awakened by the Arlo camera notification.
Our hearts racing, eyes bleary, we get confirmation that something was in the trap. Upon further inspection, it was MAGGIE!! We were so happy! ❤️ 🐾 This survivor made it 26 days in an area where there are reports of pets being lost by predators all the time!
Maggie was brought back to our house, snuggled into a bed in a crate, and slept soundly all night. Her rescue came and got her, everyone was so happy to see her. They did take her to the vet and found some very large ticks! She lost just over 1.5 lbs!!
She is currently back with her foster and will be available for adoption after she decompresses. If interested, contact Tails To The Wind Rescue and ask for miracle Maggie.
Thank you to the community who called in sightings, offered assistance, and made donations. Great job to our team for all the sleepless nights and effort!
