The LA City Controller is now conducting an audit on the city's Animal Services following the resignation of its General Manager, but that audit should be expanded to include the Best Friend's Animal Rescue group which now is able to exert influence and control of the LA Animal Rescue World. If you agre you can comment of the City Controller post
🚨NEW AUDIT STARTING: LA ANIMAL SERVICES🚨
This fiscal year, the City cut LAAS’s operating budget by $1.4M down to $30.3M.Â
LAAS has the nearly impossible task of providing care for LA’s overcrowded shelter animals and achieving a 90% save-rate.
LAAS itself alerted City officials that its funding is significantly short of what it needs to operate its 6 shelters.
Our audit will focus on how to improve shelters at current funding levels.Â
We’ll also ID ways to improve them with additional funding, & how to bring in more $$.
The audit seeks to answer these ❓s:
❓What are current shelter conditions (e.g., population, staffing, enrichment, care, & outcomes)?
❓Are care goals, policies, operations, funding aligned to promote humane treatment of animals?
❓Is the City complying with key policies, including euthanasia?
❓How do shelters compare to other cities’ shelters? To best practices?
The audit will be conducted by the civil service Audit Services Division of the Controller’s Office with technical assistance provided by a consultant with expertise in animal shelter operations and veterinary care
Our audit aims to give a detailed understanding of LAAS’ struggle to provide adequate care & possible solutions.Â
We hope the City can use our audit’s findings to improve the lives of our City’s pets.
Stay tuned for more updates.
