Barking on command is a great way to help a dog move some energy and stress and the more you do the more you notice how the bark flows more easily and sounds more earthy and natural. Conscious Barking is Stellaโs main way she moves her energy so itโs a really great tool for her ๐

Stella was super excited to meet some new people and was ready to let off some steam and run just like Benji did earlier in the day at the same spot ๐

I came into contact with Benji after his family brought him along to meet a dog from Stellaโs rescue they were thinking of adopting. Benji was very stressed back then and very reactive to other dogs and he had to be muzzled and the meeting didnโt go well. I started working with him on the core exercises, barking on command, collecting box work, with some pushing and a little tug and bitework to help build his confidence, get some of his stress out, and help him make better choices. As many of you have seen he made great progress and we then started to going to outside the dog park to start to get close to other dogs through the fence. Of course their caused him to bark at times but then he started to run along the fence with them. This week after getting some of stress out at the park we headed back to the dog park and I had a feeling he was ready to take a big step. There comes a point where you have to trust yourself and the dog and so we went inside the dog park with him on an extendable leash. He did great and so we moved over to the bigger section where all the more lively dogs were and let him run free and it was a joy to watch and he had a day to remember ๐

Before we do anything else itโs important for Benji to get some of his energy out. Dogs move their energy / stress in 3 main ways Running, Barking and Biting, and running while carrying his tug in his mouth really opens the โtapโ and gets sone of that energy flowing. I had a feeling this was going to be a big day for Benji and I was right ๐

When working with dogs an understanding of the two energies that impact their behavior, Preyful energy and Predatory energy, is important. When dogs are in full play you will notice that flip flop between those energies, one is on its back in a Preyful posture while the other is on top with its mouth on the others neck or leg in a Predatory posture and then there is the moment when they flip energies and postures. The problem comes when a dog cannot flip flop and gets stuck in one of the two.

Stella probably never got to play much with other dogs in her life and is very polite and a little shy at times when meeting other dogs. Iโve been hoping she would meet a dog who would bring playful side out and this little Frenchie did the job perfectly. Stella spends much of her day in a crate in the rescue world as she waits for her new home and so she just loves to run ๐

Bite and carry is such a great skill for a dog to develop and what happens is the gentle bite required to carry the tug gently releases stress, to turning a tap on very slightly which is why Taco takes her tug everywhere. I started working with her a few years back as she getting into fights with other dogs. After some Collecting/ Box work, Pushing and Barking on command in a sports field next to the dog park I got her into some Bitework and tug. Back then she loved chasing a ball but soon the tug took the place of the ball and she was ready for the dog park, proudly carrying her tug as we entered. Taco has never had a problem with other dogs in the dog park, even those that have stolen her tug ๐ I import good quality Bitework tugs from Germany and the key is they are designed to get the dogโs bite out which is the most effective way they can relieve stress.
Contact me if you are interested in getting one for your dog and the come in a range of sizes and colors.

Hugo the bulldog decided that Pushing was just too demanding and decided he had a more better idea ๐

Because of their tough early lives dogs like Ladybug have to learn how to play with other dogs and sheโs getting there ๐

One of the best ways of helping that barks a lot is to teach it to bark consciously on command ๐
Zoey is such a great dog to work with and hopefully having most of her life in a kennel in the rescue world this will be the year when her home finally comes ๐

The core exercises of Pushing and Collecting are great for younger dogs as are of course tug and barking on command. These exercises help a dog develop effective ways to move it energy and stress and a great confidence builders ๐
In this 3rd video clip the dog successfully gets Ladybug to follow him and then adopts another calming signal used by dogs which is sniffing and youโll notice Ladybug follows suit and the meeting is successfully concluded ๐

In this second video youโll see the dog move in curves as it slowly approaches Ladybug which is a common calming signal for dogs and then offers the face as she barks furiously at him ๐

In this first of 3 video clips this dog gives a masterclass in how to approach dogs they donโt know, especially ones like Ladybug. You notice he looks away every now and again and then barks which is an invitation to play, sadly often misinterpreted by people as โaggressionโ. ๐
