Steve Barker served as a Police and Detective Constable with the Metropolitan Police Service at New Scotland Yard in London, England for 32 years, retiring in 2006 having been awarded a Long Service and Good Conduct medal and certificate of distinguished service. Steve became involved in working with dogs on arriving in LA in 2008 having adopted a rescue bulldog named 'Dolly' who had aggression is

sues. Having successfully helped her overcome her behavioral challenges he decided to put his new found experience, and that of 32 years of policing and work as a national sports coach and trainer in the UK to good use working with the Linda Blair Worldheart Foundation in LA and rescue dogs. Having been exposed to the work of Cesar Milan on TV Steve first studied under Linn Boyke (an apprentice of Cesar) at the Zen4K9s Dog Psychology Center in LA and went on to attend a course in TTouch for companion animals and a course in the Yuen Method of Chinese Energetics both of which he used successfully in his work with dogs

Steve is also certified teacher of Taijiquan (Tai Chi Yang 24 posture form) and Nei Yang Gong Qigong at the National Medical Qigong Hospital and Training Facility in China where he studied under Master Feng Yi Jian and Nei Yang Gong successor Madame Liu Yafei and teaches classes in both at the BE Energy Center and the Pierce College program. What he found however was that the 'dominance' model of training and behavior 'modification' failed all to often, particularly with fearful, nervous and dogs experiencing great stress and as he searched for new answers he by chance came across a book called 'Your dog is your mirror' by Kevin Behan and it was Behan's Natural Dog Training methods and his whole unique the approach to working dogs changed the way Steve worked with dogs . After studying with Kevin Behan Steve has been able to put his unique methods and insights into successfully helping troubled dogs that in the past he would have been unable to truly help. Natural Dog Training helps a dog develop effective ways of moving their energy and stress through its 5 core exercises;

Pushing / Barking on Command / Collecting (Box work) / Bite and Carry (Tug) and Rub a Dub (Physical contact and massage)

But it also utilizes a different approach by adopting an approach that for many is counter intuitive, by using whatever behavior a dog is offering and using that as the tool to help him consciously move his stress. And of course a dog's environment plays a role in its behavior and its humans are a key part of that environment which of course leads to the whole 'Your dog is your mirror' concept

Dog's have evolved over thousands of years to become not only human kind's 'best friends' but if we let them our greatest teachers through their ability to connect with and bring to our attention that which lies deep within us, that unresolved emotion and stress which lies behind that which troubles us in life and often prevents us from reaching our own potential in life and evolving. As we reflect on how our dog's behavior is simply a mirror of something going on inside ourselves we begin to see the truth and of course only the truth can set us free. So as we head into the 21st century K9 Energetics seeks to play its role in helping our dogs help us so that we can all make the world a better place

Stella was adopted as a puppy during Covid and didn't get the gradual exposure to the world that young dogs need and in the absence of any positive tools to move her stress she developed often 'aggressive' resource guarding instead. As a result she was returned to her rescue and I worked with her to help her overcome her challenges and find a new home. I basically started the whole puppyhood process all over again and gradually to more and more of the new things and the outside world making sure each new experience ended as good experience.

We then worked on bitework (tug), barking on command, and Pushing to help her develop new and more satisfying way of moving her energy/stress as well as some Collecting / Box work to help her build self control.

The goal was not to try and force her to stop her resource guarding behavior but to help her develop and choose new and better ways of moving her stress and make better choices.

Stella loved all the core exercises and whenever she did grab something I would just call her and she would drop it because she knew I was offering something better and it wasn't long before she lost interest in resource guarding.

Stella went on to find an amazing home up in hills on 2 acres and she gets to roam around and visit her many friends in the neighborhood. Her original adopters could only work with the knowledge they had at the time, made worse by watching some unfortunate 'pack leader' training videos on You tube.

At no point during the process did I ever need to punish or admonish her or tell her not to do something and food was only used as part of the training process rather than any form of distraction. The key was always to help her develop effective tools and begin to make better choices

In 1941, Moose was a 120 pound German shepherd being used as a guard dog by Universal Studios. The studio was filming their newest monster movie, "The Wolf Man", in which lead actor Lon Chaney, Jr. would portray the unlucky Lawrence Talbot who falls victim to a werewolf and inherits its curse. One scene called for a dog to attack Chaney, with the two engaging in a tussle. The studio had rounded up a few dogs, but when they tried to shoot the scene none of these dogs were right for the part. Chaney suggested they give it a try with Moose, the studio guard dog. They rounded up the canine, rolled the cameras...and Moose promptly bit straight through Chaney's protective glove, breaking a few bones in the actor's hand. But they got the footage. And surprisingly, Chaney became so smitten with Moose that he purchased the dog from the watchman owner shortly after filming wrapped. Chaney and Moose were best friends, with the canine becoming a common sight at Chaney's side and even hanging out on set while Chaney filmed scenes for his movies. Eventually, Moose became something of a star in his own right, appearing in several Universal films over a three year period. Moose was paid a cool $25 a day for his work.

Also, for those out there who may be breeding (or know someone who is) please ask yourself, "How can these actions be justified as so many are dying in our shelters?" Go walk the adoption floor and take note, burn the images into your brain, and know that MOST won't make it out alive. And what you see on the adoption floor is only a fraction of what came in, many never even make it onto the adoption floor. WE DON'T NEED TO BE CREATING MORE!! It's grossly Unethical!!!.. Barking on command is a great way to help a dog move some energy and stress and the more you do the more you notice how the bark flows more easily and sounds more earthy and natural. Conscious Barking is Stellaโ€™s main way she moves her energy so itโ€™s a really great tool for her ๐Ÿ˜Š
