SAVE THE DATES - there are two upcoming public meetings of the Ad Hoc Committee-Bear Creek Stables Working Groups - September 12/24 and September 26/24 at 6pm. Attend in person at the District Administration Offices at 5050 El Camino Real, Los Altos, CA or via Zoom.

On May 14, 2024, the Mid Peninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen) Board of Directors and Midpen project staff held a public meeting with updates on the Bear Creek Stables Capital Maintenance and Repair Project and escalating project costs. The alternatives presented ranged from reducing the scope of improvements, the availability of horse boarding and/or public programs, through to closing the Stables. The outcome that evening was the formation of an Ad Hoc Committee headed by Midpen Directors Holman, Riffle and Gleason, and in the following weeks, three Working Groups were formed to address key issues.

The Working Groups are comprised of members of the public, volunteering their time and expertise in the areas of Operations and Programming, Funding and Partnerships and Site Design, Architecture and Engineering. The Working Groups have been meeting 1-2 times per week since late June. They present updates at the Ad Hoc Committee Board Meetings - these are public meetings at the Midpen District offices in Palo Alto, or via Zoom or telephone, the meeting schedule can be found at

A timely reminder to check your horse (and yourself!) carefully for ticks after a trail ride or walk on the Preserves. Anaplasmosis it a tick borne illness that can cause fever, lethargy and lack of appetite in infected horses. Your horse will thank you for that thorough brushing after a trail ride - and removal of any ticks that jumped aboard while you were underway!

After a visit to a preserve, it is important to check yourself, your children, your pets and your gear carefully for ticks. On the West Coast the Western black-legged tick (Ixodes pacificus), pictured here, is the primary carrier of the Lyme disease-causing bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, as well as other harmful bacteria, viruses and protozoa.

These ticks have three distinct life stages and must feed at each stage in order to progress. Larvae emerge from their eggs in early summer and are barely the size of the period at the end of this sentence. Larval ticks are generally not infected, as they have not yet fed. Once they do feed, they’ll drop off of their host and molt, re-emerging as nymphs in the spring.

Nymphs are most active from May-August of the following year. They are slightly larger than larvae—about the size of a poppy seed—and they typically feed on lizards, but will also feed on rodents and sometimes humans, dogs and cats. Most people are infected with diseases by nymphal ticks, because detection is much lower than in the adult phase since they are so small.

Once nymphs feed, they will molt and turn into adult ticks, which are generally active from October-May.

Great trail riding (and views!) at nearby MIDPEN Coastal Open Space Preserves - La Honda Creek, Purisima Creek Redwoods and Russian Ridge.
Join Wednesday’s meeting to hear more about their plans to protect and restore the natural environment and provide opportunities for ecologically sensitive public enjoyment and education.

Tomorrow, April 27 at 5 p.m., Midpen board of directors will review a Coastal Management Plan. The administrative plan identifies recommended actions over the next five years that build organizational capacity required to support expanding programs for Midpen’s growing coastal preserves.

Midpen’s boundaries expanded to include the San Mateo County Coast in 2004, and since then we have preserved more than 12,000 acres of open space and agricultural land on the Coastside. Join the meeting to learn more or visit http://www.openspace.org/coastside

What a great idea! It shouldn’t be too onerous of a task to log some miles on the extensive trail network at Bear Creek Redwoods Preserve in the coming weeks - but how to track your mileage🤔🐴? There is a Horse Riding Tracker app available for IPhones (but not Androids) at $25 per year. Any other options/suggestions?
