Ripken and Moose with to North Beach, but with the rain just passing through there wasn’t too much going on. Just as we were about to leave, we passed some little barking dogs on leashes- perfect! Ripken was a little concerned, but Maeve corrected his fixation and then used the tone to remind him what he was supposed to be doing- correct, then direct. Notice how all the while, they kept moving? When addressing your dog’s mistakes in heel it’s important to remember to keep walking- this sends a message to your pup that there is no need to be worried. As we move up the street, there is a little yard with a barking dog, but both boys held it together really well!
Whimsey worked with Trainer Sarah on the 6ft leash for the first time today. Working with different handlers helps our pups generalize their new skills. Heel is such a great command not only for big dogs who can pull you down, but for little dogs who can trip us up! Heel keeps them in a safe position behind our left leg so we can maneuver freely with them following along.
On leash recap with Jax after the weekend!
Off leash recap with Winnie coming off the weekend before the rain comes in!
Moose the Golden accompanied assistant trainer Sarah on a supply run to Home Depot! He did an amazing job staying in heel and with Sarah despite lots of people being out and about and even a person trying to pet him. Great job buddy!
Ripken the Pittie went on a field trip the park with assistant trainer Sarah to practice working around the busy dog park area. He has a history of being reactive on the leash towards other dogs so Sarah talks about the value of keeping an eye on both his heel position and his body language/state of mind. She interrupts any loading (intense body language in response to triggers) at the very first sign to encourage him to remain passive & relaxed. He’s the type of dog that really likes having a job so she stacked the commands one after the other to let him know exactly what he should be doing every step of the way. He did an amazing job despite a busy Saturday morning crowd in the 🐶 park! 👏
Moose the Golden went on a field trip to Dunkirk park to put all of his skills to the test in a busier and more distracting environment. Assistant trainer Sarah demonstrates the value of using our engagement moves (pace changes with a click or stim) to move his heel position back and help him to stay “tuned” into her! Good boy!
Moose shows off his moves! Like most happy pups, he struggles with impulse control (demonstrated during the down stay here) which just takes practice to build those skills!
Winnie did a long line refresh day with Sarah, who has only worked her outside on the 6ft leash. The long line feels more like being off leash which feels like less accountability. Working on the long line really tests their understanding of the commands as well as their understanding of e-collar pressure. Nice job!
