Finished up the culvert pipe for the drainage ditch that leads into the pen beside the main gate and carries water to fill up the pond which will be the main primary water source for the pen. The pond won't be but a couple feet deep at it's deepest point and is just designed to catch runoff and keep it collected between rains. We're expecting rain/storms this afternoon so I'm also going to plant some peas, beans, kale and arugula on some open patches where it will hopefully grow and reseed itself perennially. The gate is ready to be hung once I put the wire on it and secure it, then we have a few walking gates that need to be installed and we'll be ready to run this last section of fence standing between us and a finished rabbit preserve. It's been a LONG, hard, expensive journey but my dream is finally coming to reality. I wanted to create a pen that could facilitate training of rabbit beagles and other scent hounds as puppies and young dogs in packs, with the ability to expose them to multiple terrains and covers, while holding a massive rabbit population that will give constant action to the pen. This preserve will be the first of it's kind in this area and I'm receiving messages EVERY day from folks who are interested in getting their dogs trained here. Eventually I plan on constructing an elevated scaffolding deck with chairs in the middle of the pen so dog handlers/trainers can have full view of the dogs without disrupting the natural hunting process that these dogs have been bred to perform. E-collars are already ready and charged with 10 collars currently (switching half of these to the TT-15 Minis for the pups. The kennels are next as SOON as we finish the pen. This way the rabbits stocked in the preserve will have time to acclimate themselves to the pen, learn the layout, safe zones, and escapes. Our kennels will be climate controlled inside and feature individual full chain link runs that are partially under roof. The ability to house/board dogs for owners and work with them daily one-on-one will be a priceless tool we plan to use daily. I'm trying now to determine pricing and would appreciate any feedback or suggestions as far as what ya'll think is fair to both the dog owners and myself to recoup some of the money I've invested in this project.
This Rabbit Preserve not only represents my dreams but also my future. I hope to continue to provide a safe place for rabbit hunters to train and work with their dogs to make them the best possible hunters they can be as we enter a new age of overcrowding and expanding development. There are less and less large tracts of land where hunters feel safe releasing green hounds or pups and I'm hoping by starting them here in the preserve that we can eliminate any unecessary lost or injured dogs in the future.
I hope that ya'll will continue to follow along with us as we complete the preserve and proceed to tackle the kennels. It's not done yet, but we've come SO far from where we started that I would me amiss if I didn't recognize the transition. Thanks and I look forward to responding to messages as soon as the pen is near opening and meeting you all in person.
