Gateway WSSC would like to congratulate our Scentwork, Obedience, Rally and Iron Welsh Challenge Welshies!



In WSSCA’s inaugural Scentwork Trials, Susan Merriken’s Camden earned both High In Trial Advanced awards and Brenda Palmgren and Cooper earned the High In Trial Novice award for Trial 2. Lots of “A” dogs competing, which is wonderful to see!

Our High In Trial Obedience dog was Bev Garaux’s boy Odie in Novice B. In Rally, Merrielle Turnbull’s Twig earned the High Combined Triple and High Combined Excellent/Advanced awards. Then she retired from rally!

And in the Iron Welsh, there were 8 qualifiers! The Gold Medalist was Tilly (Andrea Pease), the Silver Medalist was Mason (Jenna Dockweiler), and the Bronze Medalist was Heidi (Frank & Aki Pampush) - after a 4-way tie!

The other qualifiers were Bobby (Betsie Czeschin & Susan Riese), Sully (Cheryl Clark), Yogi (Katie Lewandowski), Odie (Bev Garaux), and Twig (Merrielle Turnbull).

We had to use all our tie breakers to determine final Bronze ( # of events with Qs, # of events entered, total # of Qs). Pretty fabulous that both Mason and Twig are ten years old and still in performance competitions.


Congratulations to everyone who competed with their super smart Welshies!

For those going to the Welshie Scentwork trial: There are TWO Shepherdsville roads. The scent work venue is on Shepherdsville road in Louisville and only 10 minutes from the expo area. Not Shepherdsville road in Shepherdsville.

Advanced parking is available at kyexpo.org Getting it on-line is slightly cheaper than at the gate. Parking with in/out privileges is available at the gate only.

The Health Seminar on Thursday March 16 will be in room W7 and will start at 12:30 (pending a conflict with ring times.)

The Annual Business Meeting will be in Room W1 on Saturday, March 18. Cash bar from 5:00-6:30.

There is a change of judge for Saturday's shows. Richard Powell will be judging Welsh. Evidently the cluster has lost several judges to illness and have been scrambling to get substitutes lined up.

If you tried to enter using MBF online entries for Veterans or Performance Sweeps (as many Iron Welsh Challenge folks may do), you might have been unable to enter. This issue is being addressed by MBF and should be fixed Monday morning. There may be a WARNING note, but it can be ignored.

You may also mail in the entries and save a few bucks!

If you want your sponsorship to appear in the catalog, we need to receive it by Feb. 1 as well.

Attention Iron Welsh Challenge competitors!



Iron Welsh Challenge competitors participate in at least three different types of events. For 2023, the available events are: Hunt Test, Conformation, Obedience, Rally, and Scent Work. Points are earned for participating and qualifying in each type of event. Dogs earning qualifying scores, including conformation, are recognized as Iron Welsh Qualifiers. Top points winners are awarded Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards. Take a chance and join the fun!



If you plan to participate in the Iron Welsh Challenge (IWC) at the National Specialty in March, please e-mail the following information to Kristi Hedges at [email protected]



Owner's name and e-mail.

Dog's Call name and AKC name with titles... RN, BN, CGC, etc.

All show and performance events dog is entered in for IWC.

Dog's photos: cropped head shot, either front or profile, plus 3 or more shots, like from agility, scentwork, rally, etc. and/or informal shots: and a brief description- what do you like to do with your dog? Frisbee? Travel? Swimming, boating, hiking, etc.

Please get this information to Kristi no later than March 1

Obedience and Rally Update!

Due to a proofreading issue, we will be offering prizes for both Greater Louisville Training Club trials on Saturday, March 18. The trials listed elsewhere remain the National Specialty trials which will receive the prizes listed in the Premium List. The second obedience and rally trial for that day will receive prizes of similar value, but this trial will not be considered the National Specialty. And no, this wasn't our error!

UPDATE for the Annual Business Meeting:
On Saturday, March 18, the Gateway WSS Club will provide pizza in the grooming area at 4:30. The Annual Business Meeting will be held at 5:30 in a banquet room at the Event Center with a cash bar from 5:00-6:30. There will be a raffle and silent auction at the meeting.

National Specialty Updates:

To share grooming space with your Welshie group, write SPECIALTY SHOW on the Reserved Grooming form in the premium list. (It should be available on MBF-Inc's website soon.)

To have your message for sponsorships included in the catalog, you will need to sponsor a trophy by January 31.

Shirts must be ordered by February 1.

The Iron Welsh qualification information is now up on our website.
