Have you ever seen a “partial leatherback”?

I have come to believe that not all morphs are “all or nothing”. Leatherback, dunner and translucent all seem to have varying degrees to which they can be expressed. Some leatherbacks are more bumpy than others and some dunners have more obvious “Hershey kiss” scales than others.

Here is a great example. Both of these zeros are hypo dunner zeros. The one on the right obviously has more pronounced scales and spikes. The one on the left though, isn’t a leatherback to my knowledge. It’s still more “bumpy” than a leatherback, but not as bumpy as a normal dunner morph. So what is it?

Sometimes I forget the “simple” things to tell people about. I know many people buy those cheap thermometers from pet shops, but these three are what really shine when it comes to figuring out the correct temps.

The first is a simple probe thermometer from Walmart. This works great and can be moved anywhere to get a good air temperature at the probe sight. You can move it around and some have different settings or alarms. These are also fairly cheap and easily available.

The next is the little square. It’s made by Sensorpush and is an amazing little gadget that I learned about when I bred Green Tree Pythons back in the day. Python eggs are EXTREMELY hard to incubate and are VERY sensitive to humidity and temps. These things are amazing! They will tell you everything through an app on your phone and you can set alarms. I use these in my incubator and egg boxes to get exact readings. Even if I’m not home I can get alerts if the temps drop(usually due to power outages around here). The second pic shows a year long graph of my incubator temp and humidity(in the egg box). The only downfall with these are prices. But the one in the pic is easily 8 years old and still going strong. You can change the battery on them easily also. Available on Amazon.

Last is a laser temperature gun. These are dirt cheap on Amazon nowadays and everyone should have one. This will measure surface temps at your basking spot. This is almost a necessity for anyone new to this to make sure your basking spot is ideal!!

What is “HYPO”??

Hypo is short for the term Hypomelanism(also known as Hypomelanistic). It is a recessive trait that lacks or reduces melanin, or dark pigment. Basically, “Hypo” makes an animal lighter in color. This picture shows a great contrast between two nearly identical siblings where one(the one on the right) is hypo and the other(on the left) is not. The lacking of darker pigment makes the one on the right brighter. This trait has always been a popular trait in bearded dragons to add to every morph because it brightens their colors. Just recently, the “red monster” craze has really shown that in the red dragons, people sometimes prefer the darker red, so hypo is not as desirable in the red monster lines.

Basically, if you want bright colors, you want hypo. If you want dark, you don’t!
