Interesting case (of course my own horse!!!)---6 mos old QH c**t with swelling 3 week duration on dorsomedial side of knee, non painful and weight bearing. Sent radiographs for referral and a total of 5 veterinarians have not seen anything like it before. Recommendation was to watch and rexray in 30 days. Possibly reactive bone from an injury and hopefully it will resorb. On a good note it is not in the joint and only in the soft tissue.

Very good read ---- colic is my number one emergency besides eye disease/injury and accidents to limbs, ECT. It is important to take temp, get heart rate, look at gums before calling vet if possible and definitely before you give banamine. Banamine is a great drug for pain but it changes temp, heart rate, gum color. Vets use these parameters to evaluate severity and possible out come to a colic. Call me first before giving drugs to your horse if it is colicking.

Colic is not a disease, but rather a combination of signs that alert us to abdominal pain in the horse. Colic can range from mild to severe, but it should never be ignored, as many of the conditions that cause colic can become life threatening in a relatively short period of time. Only by quickly and accurately recognizing colic – and seeking qualified veterinary help – can the chance for recovery be maximized.

Virtually any horse is susceptible to colic, so management practices can play a key role in prevention. And although not every case is avoidable, the guidelines listed in the graphic can help you maximize your horse’s health and reduce the risk of colic.

As always, remember that every animal is different depending on age, breed and other health conditions, so be sure to work with your veterinarian to address any concerns specific to your situation!

Round worms! For those of you with foals, remember the recommendation currently is to deworm every two months until the age of two starting at 4 months of age. Rotate your dewormers. Not just the names but the actual drug classes( the chemical classes) Look on the label. The primary problem with foals are roundworms which take part of their migratory path through the lungs. The ivermectins are not the best choice for roundworms due to increased resistance. Choose the other classes of dewormers such as fenbendazole, oxybendazol, pyrantel. Of course sometime after the first hard frost all horses should be dewormed with a product such as Quest Plus that has praziquantal in it for tapeworms. Tapeworms do affect young animals and I have seen death due to this on necropsy very unfortunate.

The term "fat leg" is pretty self-explanatory, but do you know the difference between stocking up and cellulitis?

Many horses will "stock up" with subcutaneous edema (fluid swelling) in two or more legs (usually the hind limbs). Stocking up generally results from a significant decrease in exercise and usually resolves as the horse starts exercising again.

Lymphangitis (or vasculitis, big leg disease, staph infection, or cellulitis), however, is a bacterial infection and a dramatically different condition. While its causes may vary, it’s easy to spot once it sets in. The swelling will be extreme, hot, very painful to the touch, and the horse will be depressed due to the fever and discomfort.

If you think your equine friend has cellulitis or even if you're not sure, we encourage you to seek professional help promptly. Your horse doctor will make the best treatment recommendations, both to reduce swelling and to address any sort of bacterial infection that might be active or that could occur due to the edema in the soft tissue.

📣 Due to the higher concentration of our products, along with a lower feeding rate, you may have noticed a price increase on some. 📣

Unfortunately, there was an explosion at a plant that manufactures Vitamins A, E as well as a precursor for Vitamin D3. This vitamin crisis is going to challenge the livestock and feed industries over the next several months.

With our products being higher concentrated than other products on the market our prices tend to go up faster.

It is important to remember that the amount per day increase is only in mere pennies.

We are hopeful that this issue is short lived and production along with prices can return to a more normal state.

We are appreciative of everyone’s continued support, and will do everything in our power to continue providing top notch nutrition to your loved ones.

"F" IS FOR FALL-CHECKLIST! 🍂🍁

As the cooler weather moves in, now is the time to crack down on housing, nutrition, and preventative health strategies suitable for the arrival of winter.

Check out this list of essential items on the horse owner's fall to-do list, but there is much more that needs to be done—like having your horse's blankets repaired and waterproofed, securing and storing hay properly, assessing your shelters for safety and soundness, etc.

Note that your equine veterinarian is one of your greatest allies this season, so be sure to consult them and discuss vaccination and deworming protocols appropriate for your horse’s situation. This is also a great opportunity to chat about recommended changes in nutrition and exercise programs as well!
