It's not the dog days of summer yet but it sure is hot! Should you shave a Scottie’s coat super short in the summer to keep them cool? The answer is...NO!
As you can see below, dog’s hair naturally sheds the right amount in hot weather and will protect them from the sun and keep them cool. Hair is clever! If you shave your Scottie you are actually stopping it naturally from regulating it's body temperature and exposing it to sunburn, insect bites and potential skin issues.
As the thermometer rises, your Scottie typically goes through a seasonal coat change, meaning they thin out the thicker winter coat for a thinner summer coat. This thinner coat of hair helps keep them cooler by providing insulation to keep the heat away from the body. As they walk the hair floats up, allowing cooler air to pass over the skin. It also acts as a natural sunscreen!
The recommendation is to keep your Scottie cool in other ways, such as keeping them in the shade, having a plentiful water supply to drink, perhaps a paddling pool to use, a walk in the early morning or evening and not taking them in hot cars.
